In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird the economic class and race of each of the characters determines their social class. There is prejudice based on social class which affects how people are treated. For example, higher class people think that they are superior to lower class people and treat them unequally because they are ´trashy´ and ´uncivilized´. Characters such as Aunt Alexandra and Scout show hostility towards the other classes which affects the events as well. When Aunt Alexandra said, ¨We don´t need her now¨ referring to Calpurnia, the black maid, she had a different reason than what was really stated (pg 182). The basic reason is that Aunt Alexandra has come to live with the Finches now and she thinks that Scout needs her influence …show more content…
In the story, it all started when Scout was being ignorant and saying loudly that Walter is putting too much syrup on his dinner. Calpurnia wanted to have a talk with Scout in the kitchen and told her there that Walter is Scout’s company. Scout responds to Calpurnia by the quote,¨He ain't company, Cal, he's just a Cunningham (pg 33).¨ Saying that Walter does not qualify as "company," Scout is implying that the view of the Cunninghams is nothing more than being poor which may also suggest that the family should not be counted and does not belong in the category of “real people.” After all, people in Maycomb view the Cunninghams as uncivilized and trash because they are low class. Therefore she thinks Walter isn't considered company because he is low class. The Finches are a higher class than the Cunninghams which makes them be considered superior to those below. However, as a result of Scout saying this, Calpurnia reacts angrily in which she says,¨Hush your mouth! Don´t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house´s yo´ comp´ny . . . ¨ Right after that event Calpurnia gave Scout a “stinging smack” and Scout ate her dinner in the kitchen so she wouldn't have to face any more humiliation. From here we can see that since Scout displayed an ignorant attitude towards Walter and didn’t consider him company, it forced Calpurnia to argue and smack her so she can learn her lesson. This dinner event they were

"He ain't company, Cal, he's just a Cunningham ––" (24) The importace of this passage is because of Scout views upon a person with very little. She see's Walter as someone that does not have money, good formality, just a person that society has branded his family with poorness. Her judgement is based on what an upper level class of people have diclosed with her.
An important event when Scout’s moral developed is when she gets scolded by Calpurnia about heckling Walter Cunningham. Walter gets invited for lunch at the Finch’s house after Jem sees Scout beating him up. During the meal, Scout satirizes Walter about his outlandish habit of pouring syrup all over his food. Seeing this, Calpurnia becomes “furious… ‘Yo’ folks might be better’n the Cunninghams but it don’t count for nothin’ the way you’re disgracin’ ‘em- if you can’t act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat in the kitchen’” (page 33). When children are Scout’s age, they
She explains to Scout that “there’s some folks who don’t eat like us, but you ain't called on the contradict ‘em at the table when the don’t. That boy’s yo’ comp’ny”(18). Scout tells her that Walter does not count as company. Calpurnia teaches her that it does not matter who comes into their home, they still count as company, so she should treat the person with respect. When Calpurnia takes
Cal teaches respect for the less fortunate when Walter Cunningham Jr. visits for dinner. As the Finches and young Walter Cunningham eat, Scout makes rude remarks about how differently their guest eats; Calpurnia informs Scout that it “ ‘ Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo’ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty! Yo’ folks might be better ’n the Cunningham’s but it doesn’t count for nothin’ the way you disgracin’ ‘em—if you can’t act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat in the kitchen!’ ” (33) From experience, Calpurnia tells Scout that discriminating against different people is very disrespectful and if someone is treating someone wrong, they should be punished.
She tells Scout that it’s right to respect people who are different from them and wrong to judge them based on their status. Calpurnia gave Scout a small talk after her disrespectful behavior during dinner and said, “ There’s some folks who don’t eat like us... but you ain’t called on to contradict em at the table when they don’t….Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo’ company, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty!”(33). Calpurnia teaches Scout that he should treat people with reverence and always respect their differences no matter what.
How far do you think Harper Lee has effectively shown social class and family groups to be important at that time? The rigid class structure and social stratification of Maycomb County had a profound effect on the events in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The impact of this class structure was especially evident in the trial of Tom Robins on, a Maycomb Negro. The extreme prejudice of the town eventually led to the unjust conviction of Robinson for a crime he did not commit.
Moreover, when Calpurnia says “Yo’ folks might be better’n the Cunninghams but it don’t count for nothin’ the way you’re disgracing' 'em,” she means that although Scout’s status is higher it doesn’t make her any better by misjudging an individual. Calpurnia wants to discipline and make Scout realize that being judgemental and disrespectful of people's financial circumstances, or their social status is not right. Throughout the novel Calpurnia simply restrains Scout out of love. On the whole, Calpurnia's strict upbringing develops Scout into a fine, disciplined
It is important to put yourself in one’s shoes. By doing so, you can understand that person’s situation better. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Aunt Alexandra is prejudiced towards social classes, and Bob Ewell is prejudiced towards people whose skin color is different than his.
One of the first major examples of how social class affects a society is how Atticus shares how the Ewells are very different in their society. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Scout was talking about what Atticus said about the Ewells. Atticus said the Ewells had been the disgrace of Maycomb for three generations. None of them had done an honest day’s work in his recollection” (40). Here Atticus is talking about how the Ewells aren’t structured at all and have no work ethic. Atticus also said “they are people, but
Calpurnia was the Finch’s African- american housekeeper. She played a huge role in the parenting of both Scout and Jem because Atticus was an only father. Calpurnia helped Scout become more ladylike at the end of the novel by teaching her proper manners and edict. Scout is a hardcore
Young Goodman Brown is a religious man that oddly takes a chance for the worst. Goodman Brown leaves his home at the beginning of the story to go exploring into a forest where he is changed by what is happening in the forest. When Goodman Brown leaves at night is significant because at night evil things can happened. The difference between him leaving at night and day is that he knows he shouldn’t be doing what he is doing, because at night more things are unseen. Goodman Brown was pulled in the forest by this devil figure, also he knows he shouldn’t be meeting with devils, because that shows he is leaving his faith and his wife. Goodman Brown was late to the meeting with the devil, and the devil was wondering why he was late so he asked him.
There are many different social classes in “To Kill A Mockingbird.” The factors that separate people into these social classes are their skin color and their occupation. For example, Atticus, Scout, and Jem are part of the highest social class. They are part of this social class because Atticus is a lawyer, which makes him a highly respected person in the community. He is also white, which, at that time was a very important factor that chose who belonged in what social class. Scout and Jem are his children and therefore are also part of this social class.
Marijuana is the most extensively used illicit drug in the world, which is a controlled substance, and it is illegal to produce, use, and distribute in most countries. Despite this, marijuana has been legalised in some areas of Australia (Joffe & Yancy, 2004). Consequently, the debate about legalising marijuana has been discussed over decades. Legalising marijuana not only has benefits but also drawbacks. Some believe that the drawbacks of marijuana outweigh the benefits, while others oppose this viewpoint. This essay will describe the advantages and disadvantages of the legalisation of marijuana. It will be divided into two sections: merits, which include medical usage and reducing the crime rate, and demerits, which include the
