Hamlet’s Love For Ophelia Hamlet’s love for Ophelia is clearly shown throughout Hamlet in consistent forms of insanity, protection, and destruction. Hamlet experienced all of these things because he truly did love Ophelia throughout the whole play. Hamlet is one of the many Shakespearean tragedies. It is about a young prince who seeks to revenge his father’s murder. Hamlet is secretly seeing a woman named Ophelia who he is not supposed to be with. There is no doubt Hamlet truly did love Ophelia, By his acts of caring and kindness around Ophelia when the two are alone, he shows that his feelings for her are true and have always been so.

Her father uses her in hopes it will politically advance him. When Hamlet figures out he is being spied on by Polonius and Claudius, he proceeds to tell Ophelia to “Get the to a nunnery” (Hamlet Act 3 scene 1). Hamlet loves Ophelia so much that he wants to protect her from his increasing problems. Therefore, he puts up a harsh act so that she will not feel compelled to follow him, utterly protecting her. Polonius believes if he can prove Hamlet is crazy over his love for Ophelia, then the two will have no choice but to get married. Which, will put Polonius in the royal family. Polonius stated numerous times that he would sacrifice his daughter’s happiness if it boosted him politically. Hamlet puts on a play for the king and queen which the backstory of it has a very similar situation. In the play, a king was poisoned by a clown, then the clown later married the queen. Claudius, with no words, leaves with Gertrude right behind. The next part shows Hamlet and Gertrude arguing where Hamlet loses his mind and accidentally kills Polonius, thinking it is Claudius. After this he is sent back to England by Claudius to go back to school. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are sent to England with a letter that reads “when Hamlet returns to England, kill him”. Hamlet catches wind of this letter, finds it while Rosencrantz is sleeping, and replaces it with a letter that reads “Kill the deliverers of this message”. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are murdered when they arrive with the letter. Back at home, Ophelia has gone mad after losing her lover and father all that quick. She turns to the worst thing to do and commits suicide by drowning. It is still argued to this day whether it was a suicide or a drowning. After Hamlet receives word Ophelia has died, he returns home for the funeral. In act five, hamlet is speaking with the gravedigger while he is digging a grave.
