Is the great Gatsby really great? Jay Gatsby is great in some ways but is also not great in other ways. Like most people they have things that make them great and they also have things that don't make them so great. In this essay I will be talking about things that make him great. I hope this essay would change your mind if you didn't think Gatsby was a great man. The first things that made him great was that he served in the army. Gatsby had became a lieutenant when he was in the war. During this time he also met Daisy at a party and fell in love with her. Since that day it was his new american dream to be with Daisy and have a wealthy life. Gatsby also earned metals when the war was over. At first Nick thought that Gatsby was a great man but throughout the story Nick saw that he wasn’t as great. At the end Nick thought he was great in a certain way. In the begin of the book Nick also said “No Gatsby turned out all right at the end.” …show more content…
To obtain his wealth he was in organized crime and bootlegging, which was one of his not so great thing about him. With this wealth he tried to get back Daisy. The big house, all the parties, and the illegal stuff was all a part of his plan to win back Daisy. He wanted everything to go back like the way it was in the pasted. The parties was for Daisy would of showed up to one of them. The wealth was also for Daisy so that he would be accepted by daisy family. The house location was also a part of his plan to be with Daisy. It was not a coincidence that his house was across Daisy house just for no reason. As Jordan said “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the
A marvelous novel, “The Great Gatsby” written during the 1920’s by F. Scott Fitzgerald proposes a question about the truth of being “great”. The novel's protagonist, Nick Carraway grows close to Jay Gatsby; a rich, party man. Carraway strongly believes that Gatsby deserves to be known as “great.” Nevertheless, Gatsby should not be considered “great” for many reasons. To list a few, Gatsby does not do anything extraordinary to earn the title of “great”, does not work hard for success, and pretends to be somebody he wishes to be.
The single most admirable thing about Gatsby is his utilization of romance. Jay Gatsby is not just a failure, he’s also a massive success. After all he is the great Gatsby. But why was he able to become the great Gatsby? He is able to use his dream of a life with Daisy. If there is one thing that you learn as a child it is that you can use your dreams to do great things. Gatsby
In the book “The Great Gatsby” there is many things that people say made Gatsby a great or a not so much of a great person. Gatsby was a great man because he became someone with almost everything anybody could and would want but grew up from with nothing, He made all this money from working jobs that were not so great and people envied him for it even though they did not know what he did, and he was just a very mysterious and many people found that very intriguing about him. person For people that didn’t know who he was when he was younger, they all expect him to be old money and get the money from his parents, but as we learn he made his money by working, good or bad jobs he still made money and he was successful and he was proud of it.
Jay Gatsby, the title character of The Great Gatsby, is really not all that the title might suggest. First of all, his real name is James Gatz. He changed it in an effort to leave behind his old life as a poor boy and create an entirely new identity. He is also a liar and a criminal, having accumulated his wealth and position by dishonest means. But he is still called ‘great,’ and in a sense he is. Gatsby is made great by his unfaltering hope, and his determination to live in a perfect world with Daisy and their perfect love. Gatsby has many visible flaws—his obvious lies, his mysterious way of avoiding straight answers. But they are shadowed over by his gentle smile and his visible hunger for an ideal future. The coarse and playful Jay
While At lunch with Nick, Jordan was talking about how Gatsby had done to be close to Daisy. Then Jordan talked about why he bought a big house “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be across the bay” (Fitzgerald 78). By buying the the big mansion across the bay, Gatsby was hoping to be close to Daisy as possible without her knowing. Gatsby has a big house and he use it to his advantage by throwing a lot of parties. By throwing parties he was hoping to get the attention of Daisy, and maybe she would come over and see what all the fun was like.
Jay Gatsby is great in my mind. In an article by Anna Wulick, it shows many interpretations of how Gatsby could possibly be great. I believe deep and soulful is a great interpretation of Jay Gatsby, “Nick, who starts out being on the fence about Gatsby, comes to think of his love for Daisy as something that elevates Gatsby. For Nick, this love marks Gatsby as the only one who matters of all the people he met during that summer” (Wulick).
Justin Phan Mrs. Bergamotto Academic English II 12 November 2017 The Not-So Great Gatsby Many things are called great such as food or a football team, but what is the true meaning of greatness? What are characteristics that one person or thing must have to be considered great? In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the word great is used to describe the characters and even things, but when analyzed these “great” things or people are actually quite the opposite.
Gatsby believed that achieving a higher class status he would be able to charm Daisy back into his life. As Sherry Morton-Mollo states in the article ,”The Great Gatsby”,”Nick Carraway describes the mansion as “ that huge incoherent failure of a house.” The mansion exist both a vision and a failure of such a vision.” Morton-Mollo acknowledges the fact that Gatsby’s luxuries are considered a failure in the reach for the American Dream. Gatsby’s way of earning his money doesn’t prove the ideal American Dream, it proves the unearned dream led by corruption.
In the novel, Daisy and Gatsby converge and rekindle their lost love. Everything the Gatsby does is to please Daisy Buchanan. Jay hopes that his work pays off and that Daisy will tell her husband, Tom Buchanan, that she never loved him. In the end, Gatsby ends up dying for Daisy’s driving mistake. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is clearly great because
Gatsby Is In No Way Great People have argued for many years, what is it that makes people great. There are many different answers people give to this question, but this essay will go over what great truly means. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is about the bad side of America, people chasing the American Dream and how it will later lead to their downfall.
He fell in love with a girl named Daisy before he had to leave for the war. While he was at war, Daisy got married to another man. This broke Gatsby’s heart, so he decided to make a lot of money to impress Daisy. This is because Daisy was a gold digger and he figured he could impress her with a mansion.
He wanted to become rich and repeat the past of when he was with Daisy and they both loved each other. Gatsby loved Daisy very much but there was someone who was not okay with that, Tom. Tom is Daisy's husband. After Gatsby left for war, Daisy met Tom and then they got married.
(37) Gatsby's line of work, even though it might not have been legal, was allowing him to make an immense amount of money. He used this money to try to impress people in the hope that Daisy would fall in love with him. Gatsby used his wealth to try and buy himself happiness and love, which can not be bought. He purchased a large house opposite the lake from Daisy, and filled it with things to impress her. He threw outrageous parties in hopes to attract her to his house.
Only when Gatsby produces a metal of valor earned in the war does Nick believe in his war service stories. Even then Nick has a hard time believing Gatsby’s educational background because of his uncomfortable declaration that he attended Oxford, a very prestigious English university. Trust is not a strong point of Gastby’s makeup and lifestyle.
The reason Gatsby didn’t return from the war was so he could make a name for himself. Becoming rich through organized crime and buying the mansion across the bay. Then all of the parties that Gatsby had thrown was to find out if people knew of Daisy or if she would wander in. Having Jordan Baker, a professional golfer and a friend of Daisy, to ask nick to invite Daisy for tea. While having tea he brought her over to his house to impress her and show her around to reconnect. Showing her to his room and throwing all his shirts he had received from England. They were all made from sheer linen, thick silk, and fine flannel. She was so impressed by the shirts alone by saying “They're such beautiful shirts” (92). Even them seeking around each other and going behind Tom's back. He even patiently waited for Daisy to come around and tell Tom she does not love him anymore. Everything he’s done was from hope to be with Daisy but Nick sees his compassion to be with Daisy is admirable. This is why Carraway has the perspective of Gatsby being “great” because of his characteristics of hope, the love he has for daisy, then everything has good intentions behind
