Andrew Jackson was the 7th president from 1829 –1837. Some people thought he was a terrible president, but others thought he was great. Andrew Jackson was a villain because he abused his power, caused the Trail of Tears, and owned slave. This is the reason Andrew Jackson was a bad president.
Andrew Jackson was a villain because he abused his power. When Jackson first became president he despised bureaucracy which is where state officials make the decisions rather than by elected ones. He abused his power by firing many federal worked and replacing them with his supporters and the workers began to protest that he was a tyrant (Textbook). Jackson said that the reason for relocating the Native Americans was to “preserve and perpetuate the scattered remains of this race,” this means that he wanted to save their kind, but in reality he really just wanted their land (Document 5). He signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830 which said that all Native Americans east of the Mississippi had to be on the west side by 1838, but many Native Americans did not like this idea so they fought with the government (Textbook). In the end all their efforts went to waste and they still had to move, they had to travel thousands of miles to get to their destination. The Native Americans had to walk about 2,200 miles on bare foot with little supplies, the lucky ones also had wagons to ride in, but riding in them was very uncomfortable since there were not many roads at that time (Textbook), so it would be really bumpy. Along the way there were many weather problems and diseases and this led to many deaths (Doc. 8). By the end of the “trip” around 3000 (1/4) Cherokee population died, with more deaths from other tribes. These deaths could have been prevented but they were not. This shows that Andrew Jackson was greedy and just wanted the land and did not care that he had to sacrifice the Native Americans lives to get
