Healthcare Topic Research For this assignment, we were required to choose a topic that addresses the issues relevant to our discipline (i.e. public health, health care administration, or health informatics). I elected to focus my paper on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and whether the implementation of this bill has helped combat the rising price of pharmaceutical drugs. This paper will also investigate the history of the ACA, the result that this law has made within the health care industry, as well as its recommended solutions. Failure to do so will result in a penalty of $750 per worker. Seventh, starting in 2010, small businesses with less than twenty-five workers may be eligible for a tax credit that will cover up to half of their health care coverage costs. Eighth, states may be allowed to restrict certain insurance plans from offering abortions. Under this provision, no federal money will be allocated towards covering the cost of abortions. Ninth, in 2014, states will be permitted to increase Medicaid coverage to some low-income citizens under the age of sixty-five. Finally, the act intends on increasing coverage for seniors and low-income residents through Medicaid, while transforming reimbursement plans, controlling fraud, and attempting to regulate the increasing costs of prescription medication. Discussion In recent years the cost of pharmaceuticals has risen exponentially. It is no secret that America spends the most money on healthcare services yet has the worse outcomes. In a paper written by Friedman in 2016, they estimated in 2012, the United States would spend $883 per person on pharmaceutical drugs.
