Mattson LOTF Essay
Hunger, fear, leadership, and power can lead to destruction in a society. Who doesn’t want to feel powerful and and worthy of honor? Who doesn’t want to guide others and create a character that is strong in body and mind? An island filled with boys going vicious for these characteristics just makes the situation ten times worse. There is no way that deterioration of society on the island could have been avoided, especially with boys like Jack and Ralph constantly battling to gain ultimate control over all the others. Clearly there was antipathy between the two. Instead of working together, they split themselves apart and lessened their chances of surviving the island. From the early chapters of the book, it was evident that there was tension between Ralph and Jack. Most of this pressure was built on the question: Who is superior to the other? Each had their own special

There were so many accusations of innocent boys being the beastie, it eventually led to the death of an innocent boy named Simon.‘“Him! Him! The circle became a horseshoe. A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly. The shrill screaming that rose before the beast was like a pain. Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!”’(136). The beastie made the boys go wild physically and mentally even though it was not real. Hunger created many problems. The way the boys acted when they hunted and found food would make them look insane in our society. “ Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh. The desire to squeeze and hurt was overmastering.”(101). Even the most sensible and sane boy on the island was filled with alacrity to kill and this urge seemed to suffuse through out all of the boys. Hungry, the boys reached the ultimate point of savagery. These problems took the society on the island into a wrong
In the story “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, he shows how the boys lost all innocence and civilization. The boys went from having innocent child minds to taking lives of other people, acting savage, and losing all civilization due to problems on the island. The boys had forgotten where they came from and became savage in order to survive; it was the need of survival that caused the loss of innocence among the boys.
Thesis Statement: The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding portrays the theme that regardless of each person’s different background and characteristics, every individual has the ability to commit brutal acts. While this book depicts Ralph and Piggy as the most civilized characters, and Jack and his hunters as young English choir boys, their actions reveal that they all have the capability to act violently.
Jack gets mad at Ralph. Because he blamed by Ralph and he is always a lot of set up. This makes her get bored and go away from Ralph. Jack felt that he more deserves to be a leader. Then, this separate do not make him doubt at all. It is because Jack has an ability of hunting to survive on the island. In addition, there are other kids who follow him and accompanied him to keep each other. it make him sure for what he has decided. It show by Jack's speech when he says that Ralph was not the one leader who deserved,
Both Jack and Ralph were struggling for power. At first, Jack and Ralph had similar goals for what they should do on the island. They quickly retreated when Jack became obsessed with hunting for pigs on the island. Ralph thought that they should keep the signal fire going at all times. Jack started to see that he did not want to leave the island he like that there were no rules. Ralph on the other hand felt that they could not be here forever. Ralph wanted to be rescued from the island. They're very different opinion forces Jack to leave Ralph's group and start his own. Jack toke most of the other boys with him leaving Ralph with very few people. From all of this Ralph started to realize that leading a group of people was not easy. There would always be people like Jack that would disagree. Jack left feeling insulted from Ralph insulting his hunting he felt that Ralph had undermined him as a result Jack turned mean and
Character Description- gives the reader the perspective of the lives of the "New People"; the artist
“Stanley flicked his finger again. ‘I expect the beast disguised itself’”(Golding 161). In other words, it describes the disloyalty of others and the spies who hid amongst everyday people during World War II. The main topic I am researching is how fear played a role in Lord of the Flies and connecting it to World War II prisoners. What led me to this particular research is because the perspectives of the boys are easily connectable to the prisoners of war. In addition fear was a big obstacle during World War II just like it is in Lord of the Flies. In the book Lord of the Flies, fear is a constant obstacle for the boys and it is just like the obstacles of war prisoners and the terrors that ruled over them.
The key takeaway from this case is the impact that rational decision making, and bias avoidance could have altered the outcome of the events. The identification of the problem along with generating a solution, could have assisted the team in learning that not only was there a problem with the pressure on the well, but that a series of other anomalies were occurring that on their own were not devastating, but acting as a group, they could be traumatic to the well construction. Eliminating the understood biases of individuals involved would also help to address the problem in a rational manner with consideration given to the biases, but not allowing them to be a basis for the decisions that are made. It is understandable that individuals would
Often times, authors use characters in their novels and stories as symbols. The characters may be symbolic of the tangible as well as the non-tangible. In addition, characters can often be looked at with a psychological approach to literature in order to better determine or understand their symbolic significance. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, special symbolic significance may be found in the characters, Piggy, Ralph, and Jack.
“Breakdowns in society result when people avoid their responsibilities to the community to pursue their own ends.” This seems entirely true. For example, in “Lord of the Flies” most of the kids decide going around hunting and not worrying about anything else is what is important, and eventually turn into savages. This could also be true if the people of a farming community started becoming lazy and stopped caring for their crops and animals. Or, in the military, if the all the leaders just stopped giving orders. Anyway you want to put it, if people don’t do what’s required of them, the world around them crumbles.
Lord of the Flies is about a group of kids that survived a deadly plane crash that killed the pilot. They start off by making rules so they have some order, but they slowly start to go against each other. They start having fights and eventually, a small group of the kids end up killing one of the other kids. In addition, the group of kids that are the hunters kill a pig, cut off its head, and impaled it on a wooden spear/stick. Because of all the flies and insects that were covering the head, the one who killed the pig was named Lord of the
In the beginning of the book Ralph and Jack are fairly similar as the book goes along it's easy to see the difference between the two. Early in the book readers can see how Ralph tries to set rules and have order in the tribe. "...We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is that's
Life for the boys on the island develops a rhythm. Mornings are pleasant the boys are able to have fun. Most boys are trouble by images that are reflecting off the water. Boys are suffering from diarrhea and stomach ailments from eating too much fruit. Jack is so focused on finding and killing the pig that he covers his face with charcoal. A boat then passes by and Jack realizes that the signal fire is out so Piggy and Ralph quickly ran up to the fire to turn it back on but by then it is too late and the boat already passed by so Ralph is furious at Jack and the hunters because the hunters had a duty to watch it and make sure it stays lit. Later on Jack and the hunters have a dead pig on a stake in between them while they are covered with blood.
By the end of the book Jack and Ralph have more differences than anything. Towards the ending the boys split up, and Jack ends up being one of the leaders. Jack and Ralph have different ideas of what a leader is. “He’s going to beat Wilfred,” (Golding 145). As a leader Jack tortures those that don’t agree with him because he is hungry for power. Ralph’s leadership is different compared to Jack’s. Instead of hurting others Ralph want them to get rescued and off the island that has changed them. Another difference between these characters are their beliefs on what is important at this point in the book. Ralph’s eyes have been opened, and he sees that what Jack’s tribe is doing is bad. Ralph believes that it is important that the other boys understand
They are almost constantly fighting, always at each other's throats. Ralph is the complete polar opposite of Jack when it comes to decision making and leadership skills. The novel states, “Your a beast and a swine and a bloody, bloody thief!” (Golding).
