Part B: Personal Reflection Explain what you have learnt about the concept of Overcoming Adversity after viewing the file ‘Touching the Void’? Use examples from the movie to assist your explanation. I have learnt a lot about overcoming adversity from viewing the film, ‘Touching the Void’. The first thing I learned from the film, was the true meaning of adversity, I learnt that it was any time when you are great misfortune, whether it is big or small. Another important thing and probably the biggest message from the movie was, if you persevere and don’t quit or cower due to a problem you will always be able to overcome adversity. I felt as if I learned valuable coping strategies in times of struggle or despair. An example of …show more content…
If Simon and Joe were prepared for being on the mountain a little longer, it may not resulted with the overall outcome of the situation. My friend has made the mistake of not being prepared for a test, as they forgot a crucial item which would help them take the test, while most other people were fully prepared for the test. This resulted in my friend getting a worse score due to his/her organization skills. Imagine you are Joe. Discuss how you would feel, react and behave towards Simon after the experience of the Andes Climb and give reasons to justify why you would feel like this. I would have mixed feelings about Simon, as I would blame him for everything that happened to me, but in the end I know I would have doe the same thing if I were in his situation. I don’t know about being in that situation, but when I would see him again I wouldn’t know how to react or what to say to him. Initially I would hate his guts as he just dropped me of a 150-foot drop which I am even lucky to be alive from. I would think if I ever got to see him again I would try and make his life as miserable as mine was once he cut the rope. I mean how could he cut the rope from his partner the two of us are suppose to work with each other not against, and he just gave up on his one responsibility. Then as I would continue through my journey, I would realize that hey it is not is fault for what happened to me, I mean how was he supposed to know that
Simon goes into the jungle to help the littluns get the fruit from the high branches.
Simon is the one boy who never participates in destructive behaviors and always contributes to the well being of the boys. He continues to work even after everyone stops, gives Piggy food when no one else will, and speaks his mind about the beast. He is also the only one to realize that the true beast is inside the boys. Simon’s moral compass, much like the superego, allows him to see the evil of mankind. Simon is whole-heartedly good. The superego attempts to lead a person to the morally right pathway, much like Simon aims to show Ralph how he can do what’s best for the tribe. The primitive nature of the others overpowers Simon’s internal good nature. Even after his death, Simon’s moral nature lives on through the boys similar to how the superego can continue to shine after a person follows the desires of the id.
Ralph explains that after Simons death, the young boys not only had to fear the chance of survival and fear the high probability that they would be there until they died also ended up fearing
Simon shows his individuality and cravings for tranquility and cognizance also through his participation with others. One instance when he truly displays this is when he was picking fruit from the “littluns”. The “littluns” and “lugged them towards the trees” and “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach” (Golding,56). He feeds them alone and “when he had satisfied them”he “turned away from them and went where the just perceptible path led him” (Golding,56). This shows how through his clarity with nature and himself, he helps others and continues to portray that he prefers to think, act, and help others by himself. He also shows his individualism when he reacted to the death of the pig. With the chaos going around him, Simon isolates himself and “lowered his head, carefully keeping his eyes shut, then sheltered them with his hands” next to the pile of guts Jack and Roger left after penetrating the pig’s head with a stick (Golding,138). He ignores everything around him and tries his best to hide away from the monstrous actions the other boys are committing. This also supports the idea that he favors time alone in his own thoughts in peace rather than facing his fear. In
Later on page 89 the book says, “Simon’s effort fell about him in ruins; the laughter beat him cruelly and he shrank defenseless to his seat.” The others treat him like an outcast and make fun of him. They do not want to listen to what he says because he might be
Adversity has a way of bringing up challenges unexpectedly, most people shrink away from it and get consumed, but when they push through it people come out stronger than they were before.
Adversity will be overcome when one becomes brave , determined , and has the willingness to fail.As being born without a arm, baseball player Jim Abbott, had a long journey ahead of him.Or the brave runners who ran the Boston Marathon after two bombs went off at the finsh line. last year.Even Malala Yousafzai, a young who got shot in the head by the taliban because she thought that girls all girl should get an education. All of these people remember to maintain in control , be brave , and accept failure when overcoming adversity.
Fear is a very strong emotion. It’s created by the thoughts we create in our minds. We can all choose whether we listen to those thoughts or if we push it to the back of our minds and carry on with our day. Sometimes fear is good. It tells us that we should get out of a dangerous situation or place. Other times, it can be evil. It controls and sabotages us. It haunts us everyday. Controlling people, like Jack, use it to their advantage. Other people, like Ralph, push them to the back of their minds and focus on the more important things in life. Simon comes face to face with the fear and evil.
Overall, adversity is not always something to be avoided. Once someone is affected by adversity in their life, they must keep going and work through it opposed to allowing it to block them permanently. While enduring a difficult time, people are most vulnerable and receptive, making it imperative to properly handle these misfortunes that shape
That one can find meaning, contentment, and inspiration in life. No matter how long a person has struggled with pain and problems, growth and improvement are possible.
Bethany Hamilton loses her arm to a shark. She was still able to over come adverstiy. There are many was to overcome adversity. Some ways to overcome adversity is by having a support sysytem , using association , and by problem solving . Many people overcome adversity.
Adversity can be seen in many different ways. Some people look at adversity as a learning experience, while others view adversity as a situation marked with misfortune. When a person is faced with adversity, rather than viewing it as something to hate, they should see it as a opportunity to grow. In the stories by Doris Lessing, W.D Wetherell and Alice Walker, they all show different types of challenges each character had to over come and their journey to do so. These stories all shared similar outcomes, they demonstrate how each character used an obstacle they were faced with, and turned it into a beneficial experience and how it shaped them into the person they are today.
Overcoming adversity takes a lot of skill and hard work. If you don’t try to finish, you can’t expect to win. Adversity is an obstacle in lots of lives, whether it’s at work or at school. Using determination, courage, patience, and attemptation helps you overcome adversity because adversity is just an obstacle, so it will die down, later on. Don’t give into adversity, for giving up means that there is no way to succeed and you will be stuck in a loop of adversity. Always be hopeful and strong, and adversity won’t be a problem to deal
I would have asked him to stop drinking and start to look at the people he was hurting including himself. I would have asked him question about the outcome of everything once it started to affect his body. He put a lot of people’s lives on the line when he poured more alcohol into the bottle. He showed a weak state and that seemed to be his daily routine. Nothing really mattered anymore until things started to crash down on him.
This shows that Simon has thought about it and is thinking about it more as he moves forward and ends up putting on the pig to show everyone how he feels but ends up getting killed. Simon shut people out because he was torn between doing the right thing and not doing the right thing. He understands that if he just goes away that he won’t have to be torn. Which shows that he would rather step back and think and look then to just jump to conclusions. Simon is mature for doing what he did. This is very important because it shows that people that you say you can trust you can’t and they stab you in the back. Simon is a very important person in the book and always will
