Tragic Changes In The Tragedy Of Macbeth By William Shakespeare

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, to be corrupt is, “to become tainted or rotten [or] to become morally debased.” In the play, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, Macbeth begins the play as the Thane of Glamis and a brave warrior in the battle. As he obtains the position of Thane of Cawdor, he beings to change for the worse. Macbeth changes over the course of the play because he believes that he is becoming more independent and stronger, but in reality, he is actually becoming weaker, more insane, and corrupt.

   In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth decide, in a great fit of ambition, to kill King Duncan.  Later in the play we see the same two characters undergo a transformation in their personalities after murdering the King.  Macbeth begins the play as a noble soldier and gradually changes into an ambitious and murdering tyrant.  Lady Macbeth begins as a strong, ambitious woman who dominates her husband and gradually changes into a weak and guilt-ridden woman.  This essay will explore the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth before and after the murder of King Duncan.

The character of Macbeth is like a crazy girlfriend, they change so fast. Its starts out great, at one moment she's happy loving and flawless, then out of nowhere she becomes a psychotic crazy lunatic who tries to murder and kill everything that is in her path. The three witches make Macbeth lean towards acting unlike himself by convincing him that he will become the Thane of Cawdor and the King of Scotland. When Macbeth does indeed become Thane of Cawdor, he believes that he will become the king of Scotland. He presumes he has to do whatever it takes for him to become the king, no matter what the cost, or who he has to kill. It is his destiny to become the King, therefore he must do whatever is needed to succeed. Macbeth ponders the idea of the witches telling the truth and what he must do to become the king, “This supernatural soliciting cannot be ill, cannot be good. If ill, why hath it given me earnest of success, commencing in a truth? I am thane of Cawdor. If good, why do I yield to that suggestion whose horrid image doth unfix my hair and make my seated heart knock at my ribs, against the use of nature? When reading a novel or watching a play, it is hard to watch any character make poor decisions that result in a miserable ending. Macbeth, the central character in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, is a perfect example. Macbeth goes through a tragic change of character as he makes a series of bad decisions. Throughout the tragedy, Macbeth loses his sense of better judgment and makes choices that cause him to evolve into a cold, haunted man. He goes through three major changes in his character, from having a well-formed conscience and being able to tell from right and wrong, to becoming impulsive, to finally becoming completely numb and coming to a conclusion that life is meaningless and nothing matters.

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a book based on a character named Macbeth, who was known as a war hero, and a loyal general before his encounter with the 3 witches. Every character changes throughout the play, but Macbeth’s change is one of the most significant of them all. Macbeth caused himself to change from a loyal soldier into a paranoid tyrant throughout the whole play by losing his loyalty to his king and friends, becoming greedy and going insane. From the beginning of the play, Macbeth is surrounded by darkness. He is lured into it as soon as he gains power. After he is given the title of the Thane of Cawdor, he starts getting greedy and hungry for more power. This results in the first ‘dark’ act that is performed by Macbeth which is the murder King Duncan. Although at first, Macbeth does not want to commit the sin, he is persuaded and tempted into darkness with hallucinations. “Macbeth: I have done the deed;/Didst thou not hear a noise?” (2.2.14). This quote shows Macbeth admitting to killing King Duncan. Although, Macbeth feels guilty about committing such a horrendous crime, it is only the start of what he does to make sure that this power and authority stays with him. Macbeth committing one of life’s most gruesome acts, murder, is what starts the journey to change his character to turn into a different character. Evidently, King Duncan’s murder proves that Macbeth was starting to turn into an evil man. He murdered someone in cold blood so he could gain additional power for himself. For this reason, his character slowly starts to share all his qualities with a dark and evil person. These qualities include greediness, hunger for power and a cold heart which clearly prove that his actions were one of the many reasons how he changed into different

Macbeth is the tragic hero in the play Macbeth. He has a tragic flaw that ends up ruining his character. Macbeth’s tragic flaw is ambition. Though ambition is usually a good thing, too much can be fatal. Macbeth’s character changes dramatically throughout the duration of the play. What once was a noble knight, is now a cold blooded killer.

It prompts us to question our view of life – do we succumb to the false promises of evil, as tempting as they are, or do we remain defiant and true to ourselves.
