History Historically, substance abuse issues were thought of as a male problem (Bride 2011). Treatment center programs, methods and models are constructed around the male psychological needs rather than mix-gender needs. Literature shows that 12-step programs, therapy, individual counseling, group therapy and many other models provide to the increase in success stories however there is a lack in research focusing on the needs of the gender individual (Marsh, Cao, & Shin 2009). Substance abuse treatment facilities have utilized very similar models of treatment throughout history with very little change in the programs. Throughout the years, many more facilities have implemented different gender specific treatment programs but very little research has been conducted on these programs. Comparing men and women in relation to their specific needs found that women typically report more psychiatric symptoms, more depression and anxiety, lower self esteem and much higher rates of childhood sexual abuse than men (Bride 2011). Many studies show that treatment is more effective when tailored to meet specific client needs. According to Marsh, Cao, and Shin (2009) substance abuse treatment is more effective when health, mental health, parenting, vocational, housing and legal issues are addressed. Women in treatment programs express more concern about specific needs although the program itself is specific towards male needs. The reoccurring issue in substance abuse treatment history

With my most recent employment I was the face and voice of a substance abuse facility. When a client or family member called in seeking information, I was the specialist that coached them through the process while providing information about the facility and selling the program. Every call had the potential to be stressful but with proper training and my professional disposition, I was able to effectively convert most calls into an admission. A particularly stressful situation was when a mother called the facility in crisis mode about her son needing our services immediately. The mother was stressed and cussing at me and eventually hung up the phone when she realized we did not offer the immediate services she needed. I remained calm and
The chosen article by Lanza & Menendez (2013), stated that the acceptance and commitment therapy for drug abuse in incarcerated women has shown treatment intervention evidence based on assessment prior to treatment and at the end of treatment on substance use disorder. For example, the evidence intervention started by randomly selected thirty-one women with the issue of substance abuse and were three
Moreover, the function of help to overcome problems including addictions are imposed on the female. It means that in case of male alcohol abuse, the wife or mother is a person who is trying to help and finds possible ways for recovering. However, if the woman is the one that needs help, there are huge doubts on whether the spouse will be able to see the problem and to solve it. The same lack of support seems to be the reason for the high percentage of relapses among women. Relapse, which is defined as “a return to the use of drugs, cigarettes, alcohol or other substance use after a period of abstinence, accompanied by a reduction of dependence symptoms” (Haber et al., 2009), can be prevented in case of right mentoring.
There are various treatment options available to aid individuals with substance problems. Such methods include counseling, both inpatient and/or outpatient that can be done individually or in a group setting. Long-term residential treatment consists of 24-hour treatment, where the individual lives at the facility. Out-patient treatment can be described as a less intensive treatment program, that does not cost as much as long-term residential treatment and is useful for people who have an occupation or other commitments that they cannot neglect for a period of time (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2012). As well as, there are 12-Step Programs that are group based. Some common 12-Step programs include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Al-Anon, which is for friends and families of alcoholics (The Addiction Recovery Guide, 2015). A study conducted by Kelly, Stout, and Slaymaker, looked at the effectiveness of 12-step programs starting with intake, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. Participants were emerging adults so varied between 18-24 years of age. 303 participants were included in the study. They were able to gather that 36% of individuals attended meetings prior to treatment, rose to 89% by 3 months, 82% continued to attend at 6 months, and declined to 76% by 12 months. Also, participants attended approximately 3 meetings per a week. How often someone attended 12-step meetings did not impact effectiveness compared to involvement at the meetings

Drug abuse and alcohol abuse are expected to have worse consequences for women than for men based on biological differences and societal role expectations for men and women. The biological argument is that women metabolize alcohol at a different rate because of their lower ratio of water to body weight. Social role expectations exist because of the strong social disapproval of intoxication and drug
Substance abuse programs in these centers are focused on the behavior, causes, values and social aspects of no particular gender - which, usually, proves to be more comprehensive and more supportive.
Over the past while, there has been an increased amount of attention on gender statistics that are associated with substance abuse. Eating disorders are twice as common for women dealing with substance abuse compared to those who are not. Women dealing with substance abuse have also disclosed experiences of sexual and physical abuse in childhood or adulthood. These considerable factors can make someone more vulnerable to relapsing after treatment. Mind-body therapies present women with alternative skills and solutions to deal with common triggers and stressors without turning to drugs.
The first randomized study compared BCT plus individual treatment to equally intensive individual treatment (the same number of therapy sessions during the same time period) for married or cohabiting male patients entering an outpatient substance abuse treatment program (Fals-Stewart, Birchler, & O’Farrell, 1996). The individual-based treatment (IBT) method used in this study was a cognitive-behavioral coping skills intervention designed to teach patients how to recognize relapse triggers, how to deal with urges to use drugs, and related
Addiction treatment problems are reaching even further out into society with new synthetic drugs that mimic marijuana, cocaine and many other illegal drugs. These new designer drugs are making users throughout the country very sick, causing seizures, hallucinations and even death. Preventive measures and treatment for these kinds of addictions cannot take place soon enough. These new designer drugs are sweeping the country as hospital admissions and reports to poison control centers dramatically increase.
In 2013, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (2014), approximately 8.2 percent of the United States’ population age 12 years or older, 21.6 million persons, were classified with substance abuse or dependence. Longer patient treatment stays benefits patients and society; however, against medical advice rates for substance abuse treatment facilities are high despite the association between positive outcomes and treatment for substance users (Kosanke, 2000). The change of behaviors exhibited by substance users is essential and key for positive treatment outcomes (Mallows, 2014). The lack of substance abusers’ behavioral changes effects the completion rates of treatment facilities

If you are searching for a substance abuse treatment center, it is very important that you find one that will meet your needs. You should review the facilities or services they have to offer, for example, the treatment programs, professionals, ratings, location, and what they charge for these services. So after doing my research on some treatment centers in my area, I chose Outreach located in Ridgewood Queens. I chose this center because it is close to home and they offer a wide range of services, such as, long-term residential substance abuse treatment to adolescents. I thought I would be interesting to visit and I see what these young ones are going through and how the treatment center is helping them.
