Trevor Hall, a singer/songwriter, incorporates Hindu beliefs and teachings into his music; sometimes directly, or in the most subliminal ways. “Green Mountain State”, “Unity” and “You Can’t Rush Your Healing” have all had great influences in my life the past years, keeping me grounded and teaching me to positively explore and dive into my emotions.
Born near the beachy shores of South Carolina, Trevor Hall grew up listening to the melodious tunes of his father’s harmonica and drum set (Rosenfield, 2012). His soul had been drained, and the repetitiveness of performing show after show had taken its toll on the musician. During this much needed break for healing and personal growth, Hall took the opportunity to marry his wife, Emory Hall. Finding solitude, both internally and externally, is an extremely powerful tool in the Hindu religion; so, to celebrate this new chapter of their life, the newlyweds went to the mountains of Vermont where they took the time to simply be: no worldly distractions of people or work to get in the way. While on this break from the outside world, Hall wrote his first song on the album, “Chapter of the Forest”, named “Green Mountain State” ("Trevor Hall Chapter of the Forest"). It has been Hall’s mission to radiate words of encouragement from his music. Implementing the powers of a mantra, he repeats “There’s a way/” followed by “It has always/” (II. 5-12). Just those few words have encouraged me to always find a way to ground myself in the hectic life I have. This mantra has stuck with me because when this song came out, I was going through an identity crisis. I no longer felt like my actions were taking me anywhere in life. I learned through these lyrics that no matter where we are or what we are doing in our lives, there is always a way to get back to solid ground, while not letting egotistical thoughts consume the mind. When the song came out in 2015, I was in the midst of graduating and truly coming to terms with the person I am. Going through this period of self-realization, the lyrics “You can't rush your healing/Darkness has its teachings/Love is never leaving/You can't rush your healing” (II. 19-22) really went to show me that the hard times I was going through were placed in my way as learning experiences. Listening to the mellow tunes of this song had such powerful repercussion on my mood as well.
