Most people making a visit to Italy try to see all of the famous sites that we have all grown up with in our history books. The majority of visitors to Rome are happy to see the Vatican, St. Peters Basilica, or the Coliseum; little do they know that there is so much more to be seen. While researching our trip that we would make to Rome, I discovered a part of St. Peter Basilica that is rarely seen by most tourists. Because of research, determination, and good old American persuasion, this led us to obtaining tickets to the “Scavi” and an experience of our lifetime. That was a problem for us, we were not working on a timeline with our tour of northern Italy, and I would have to find a way around that. When we finally arrived in Rome, we headed for the Vatican area to try and gain entry to the Scavi Tour. A three hour line existed just to enter St. Peter’s Basilica. But from my research I knew that the Scavi excavation office was where we needed to go, so we headed in that direction. Once again we were stumped; there were Swiss guards and a metal gate that allowed no entry to the area we needed to go. Determination took over; seeing St. Peter’s bones were much more important to me than even seeing the Pope. I noticed a platform where an official looking man with a badge was standing and I approached him for help. I explained to him that we wanted to visit the Scavi, but that I had not been able to pre-order the tickets. He said that either my husband or I could go and talk to the Swiss guards and ask them to allow me back to the Scavi office. I was the one that had done all of the research so my husband sent me to talk with the guards. It was not as intimidating as imagined, perhaps because they were wearing very funny looking uniforms. I explained to the very nice guard what my mission was and how determined I was to see the bones of St. Peter, even though I had no tickets. He smiled very sweetly and allowed me
