The movement of the gay and lesbian population in the United States is one that has been in progress since the early 1900s, and is still facing overwhelming controversy and backlash today. The push for gay liberation in a country founded on Christian morals and beliefs has subsequently led to struggles over equality of marriage, adoption, jobs, and healthcare. One side of the controversy argues that every individual deserves the same rights, while the opposing mindset argues that being homosexual puts you into a group of people that is different, and will therefore be treated as such.

The LGBT community has been silently suffering through generations. But in this generation, they are finally showing the world their voice. There have been many instances where young adults were denied their right to be who they are and now they are speaking out about the mistreatment. Have you ever felt like an outsider? Did you ever feel like you didn’t fit in and you weren’t accepted? Well, I don’t think it’s much of a problem for the outsiders in this upcoming presidential election. The presidential candidates, Donald J. Trump and Bernie Sanders, are known as the “outsiders” of the election but, are gaining so much support and acceptance. Sanders is a highly Liberal candidate who wishes for many free social systems for the United states while Trump is a conservative business man who wishes to “Make America Great Again” (“About Donald…”). The people that are voting for Trump are not going to back down any time soon or change their minds but, when it comes down to a general election, the majority of the United States population seems to side with Bernie Sanders.

In light of the recent election putting a man with questionable morality in the powerful seat of President, many in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community are fearful of the repercussions this will cause. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, “867 cases of hateful harassment or intimidation [were reported] in the United States in the 10 days after the November 8 election”, and swastikas adorned people’s cars and homes in angry graffiti, accompanying words such as “white power” and “fag”, “he she” and “die” (Yan).
