Cold winters, nasty cookery, worn out shoes, and lack of support was the definition of valley forge. My winter at valley forge was a difficult time, not just for me, but as well as my fellow soldiers due to many factors. The question “ would you have re-enlisted?” determined many soldiers futures. Valley Forge is a hard place to live and especially fight, but something’s make more of an impact than other things here. Starved Rock Park is a beautiful, marvel that lies along the Illinois River just 90 miles West of Chicago. The park was named after a battle that took place in 1760 that involved the Ottawa Indian tribe. When the battle broke out among opposing tribes the Ottawa Indians were forced to take refuge on a giant rock. Several days after the battle, the tribe began to run out of resources and eventually starved to death, giving the rock and the park its name. The rich history of the area began in 8000 BC when the Archaic tribe first settled there. From then on tribes such as the Woodland, Hopewellian, and Mississippi have also inhabited the area. The Pecos river is an amazing kayaking trip that really puts the individual in the center of nature. It is roughly 900 miles long and is “one of the major tributaries of the Rio Grande (Pecos).” The Pecos River was home to the Pecos Pueblo Indians and they left behind a variety of different artwork (Pecos). These pieces of art range from pots to pictographs and petroglyphs that can be located in a variety of places along the river. However, there has been an increase in human activity that has caused some of the pieces of artwork to be damaged or fully destroyed. One of the most popular places to find petroglyphs is along the Lewis Canyon. There are roughly thousands of petroglyphs that the ancient Indian tribes would carve into the stone but, since the rise in the human levels, I have noticed people trying to impersonate some of these images and also leave trash around that area. Therefore, I believe that it would be best to have someone go out there every week to pick up the trash and to also look after this place because there is history that surrounds the Pecos River.

The Natchez Steamboat is an old steam powered paddle boat. It was made in 1975. The engine was made in 1935. When you get on the dock you have to go through a Disney World styled line it was long but you got through it quickly. They have big sailors wheel that you can take a picture with and get back in a frame. As you’re waiting to board the boat you can see the beautiful Mississippi River and different statues. When you get your ticket you have to get half ripped of and the other half you need to save the other part because that’s how you will get your lunch. As you cruise along the Mississippi you can see all of the things that make New Orleans special. After about thirty minutes of riding we got called in for lunch.
