Franklin D Roosevelt was the president during WWII. Before the war, his foreign policy that he created was meant to move our country “from isolation to intervention.” After the war it kept that way, the intervention was being acted on because we became a leader in economics and social issues. We also became a communist country under the influence of the policy. After the war our country supplied aid in Europe to influence the people on our intervention. This is just an example on how our country was not under isolation but rather taking action and trying to bring world peace for the better of our country. The foreign policy was effective and made a lot of issues after the war become stronger.

In the book, America’s Great War: World War I and the American Experience, Robert H. Zieger discusses the events between 1914 through 1920 forever defined the United States in the Twentieth Century. When conflict broke out in Europe in 1914, the President, Woodrow Wilson, along with the American people wished to remain neutral. In the beginning of the Twentieth Century United States politics was still based on the “isolationism” ideals of the previous century. The United States did not wish to be involved in European politics or world matters. The U.S. goal was to expand trade and commerce throughout the world and protect the borders of North America.

Whenever war broke out overseas in 1914, many Americans had ties to countries involved. Many of citizens living here were immigrants or children of immigrants who came from Germany, France, or other countries involved in the war. Out of the 92 million citizens living in the states, one-third of them were hyphenated Americans. There was strong support of the Central Powers in the states due to the 8 million German-Americans and the 4 million Irish-Americans who disliked English rule. Yet, many Americans were pro Allies due to the language bond with Great Britain. America wanted to keep to their selves as war broke out in Europe and not get involved. President Woodrow Wilson would announce in 1914 that the Unites States would stay neutral during the war. Wilson would run by the slogan “Keep Us Out of the War” whenever he was running for re-election for presidency. Americas would trade with both parties and bankers could lend money to both sides involved in the war. Trading with Germany would eventually be blockaded and trade with Allies would increase.

The end of World War I left much of America confused on the country’s role in world affairs. Many people believed that the United States should primarily worry about its own issues and problems, and let the world handle their own problems. But President Woodrow Wilson was not one of those people. He believed that the United States should be directly involved in the issues affecting all of the countries of the world. He also wanted the United States to be the country to make a push for a League of Nations. “The people of the United States could act upon no other principle; and to the vindication of this principle they are ready to devote their lives, their honor, and everything that they possess. The normal climax of this the culminating and final war for human liberty has come, and they are ready to put their own strength, their own highest purpose, their own integrity and devotion to the test.” Wilson believed that if the United States needed to be a part of a League of Nations in charge of keeping peace around the world, this would keep America

The United Sates planned to stay neutral dunning both World War I and World War II. When President Woodrow Wilson took office he had little experience handling foreign affairs, he believed that America had a moral duty to stay at peace during the outbreak of World War I unless it affected domestic affairs. I disagree with President’s Woodrow decision to practice Isolationism and moral diplomacy, because staying neutral did not help improve the world’s condition during wartime. There was a moral reason for World War I. By staying neutral America seemed to have weak leadership. By not commenting on the assassination of Franz Ferdinand or getting involved in the war America didn’t set the moral standard that the moral diplomacy sought to aim

People now understood what real wars are like; they are not always honorable, romantic or beneficial. As a result, isolationism ran high as the postwar United States entered the 1920s. By the time President Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany and its allies, the World War I had already been raging for four years (Doenecke, 2010, p. 1). Prior to this declaration of war, America had tried to remain neutral, while Germany, Autria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria waged war against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Rumania, and Japan. Many of these belligerents joined the war at various times during this four year period, so the war continued to expand during this four year period. Wilson and a significant percentage (49%) of the American public had wanted to stay out of this conflict as possible when it first started (Doenecke, 2010, p. 20), but a series of events forced America's hand.

Woodrow Wilson was the president of the United States of America at the time during WWI. The U.S was content with staying neutral during the first world war and it proved to be extremely beneficial for them as they became rich. The economic surplus that came with being neutral was enough reason for the U.S to stay out of the war. They were eventually pushed into participating in the war and played a key role in the allies victory. The reinforcements from the U.S helped tip the scales in the allies favor in the battle against Germany in the western front. The start of the Spanish-American war also marked something bigger- American entry into world affairs. Since then, the U.S. has continued to have a significant hand in various conflicts around the world, and has entered many other treaties and agreements. In 1914, at the start of World War I (WWI), President Woodrow Wilson, in a declaration of neutrality, vowed to keep America out of the war. Inspite of this, Americans were spurred on by German aggression, violation of international law, and protecting economic interests. The U.S. had entered the war, creating a major turning point. When other nations jumped into WWI in 1914, America adopted a policy of neutrality. News of the horrors of the war convinced Americans that they had taken the right approach. Many could not believe that a civilized society could resort to such atrocities. Germany’s use of U-boats in unrestricted submarine warfare finally pushed the U.S. to declare war. President Wilson urged for peace based upon the idea of a League of Nations, where many nations would act as one to preserve the peace of all. Although WWI pitted country against country, it also galvanized America, ushering in an era of massive change. Wilson dictated that “Peace had to be a peace of reconciliation, a peace without victory, for a victor’s peace would leave a sting, a resentment, a bitter memory upon which terms of peace would rest, not permanently, but only upon quicksand” (Trueman). Peace came in 1918, although it was not a peace without victory, and a colossal shift in the way of life followed soon after (Trueman).

The U.S. wanted neutrality during the war. The citizens of US knew that their involvement in the first World War had been a terrible mistake driven by bankers and business owners with business in Europe. They believed this should never be repeated again. To keep America out of the war, Congress passed a series of Neutrality Acts, and they took no part in conflicts such as the Spanish civil war, but Franklin D. Roosevelt knew that the Axis Powers would soon conquer Europe, and America would be their next target. The question of the extent of US involvement had divided the country. On one side were Internationalists, who argued that giving aid to Great Britain and France would make US going to war unnecessary. On the other side were Isolationists, who believed that US should not have association in the war and remain neutral by avoiding financial deals with countries at war. Roosevelt was an internationalist.(“The Neutrality Acts, 1930”).

Woodrow Wilson, our 23rd president, became involved in a war that he did not want any part of. Wilson wanted to remain neutral and have peace as in his first term of office. During World War I Wilson’s roles in the war became well known in all countries. Wilson wanted peace more than anything else. In seeking for peace Wilson asked Congress for the U.S. to enter World War I. which may not sound like a peace strategy but Wilson felt it was the only way to stop Germany and gain peace. Wilson wrote his speech for world peace, Fourteen Points, that he was probably most famous for. He attended and played an integral part in The Treaty of Versailles. He was the founder of the League of Nations,

"The man who is swimming against the stream knows the strength of it"(Woodrow Wilson). With this in mind Woodrow Wilson ordered the U.S. to join WW1. He created the 19th amendment, took responsible risks to end WW1 and illuminated the world by creating the League of Nations.

During the 1920s, the United States was forced into war by the Germans. Germany, attacking and violating with the use of submarines, gave President Woodrow Wilson, who was president during World War I, no other option but to go into war. “We enter this war only where we are clearly forced into it because there are no other means of defending our rights.” (Wilson, 1917). He was a neutral person. Even though he wanted

America started to increase its involvement in foreign affairs during World War l. On April 30, 1915, Woodrow Wilson spoke in New York. Wilson said “my interest in the neutrality of the United States is not the small-minded desire to keep out of trouble. To judge by my experience, “I have never been able to keep out of trouble. I have never looked for it, but I have always found it..... If a man is looking for trouble that is the trouble of men in general and I can help a little, why, then I am in for it.” Wilson’s words show that if a nation creates trouble for the whole world, he is willing to get involved and help solve the problem. On May 27, 1916, Wilson spoke in Washington D.C. He said that the nations of the world must in some way “band themselves together to see that right prevails against any sort of selfish aggression.” Wilson realizes that it is important to connect with other nations to overcome aggression. The United States would also do anything to secure their values. They are willing to become “a partner in any workable association of nations formed in order to realize these objects and make them secure against violation.” Americans are realizing that they need to work with other nations in order to make sure American values are not violated.
