Patricia, great post. I do think that a culture that needs some attention is the Native American culture. There are many reasons why this culture needs attention from the medical community. Some of the issues that could be covered when seeing the Native American culture are mental health, heart disease, stroke, infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and cancer.
Some of these issues could be addressed with healthy eating as you have discussed. Ways that the community health nurse could help this culture are making sure that she understands the culture beliefs. By doing this the provider would be able to provide culturally safe and competent care. The Native American culture is also notorious for not practicing western medicine; this is not
Identity in Native America is directly associated with culture and language. As a result, some of the issues today which are important in shaping the identity of modern Native Americans include: representations of native people by the media in sports and popular culture; how indigenous languages are being revitalized and maintained; and identity reclamation. The Native American lifestyle has changed significantly during the last half of the 20th century and that is because views on the Native people have drastically changed over time. They have had many hardships that have greatly impacted their culture over the past few centuries leading up to today.
Have you ever wonder how the world was created from another culture’s perspective? Native Americans used creation myths to explained to their people how the world was developed overtime. Creation myths are a big part of the Native American culture. they have been passed down from generation to generation. In the creation myths, harmony with nature, rituals, and strong social values are shown in each myths. The purpose of having strong social value in these myths is to teach younger Native Americans valuable lesson if they ever do something bad. These myths reveals how the rituals were created and their intentions for doing it. Creation myths has harmony with nature in it to show a very close kinship between them
Nurses must consider the cultural health practices when assessing patients. The Culture Care Theory is essential and must be incorporated into other nursing theories as understanding cultures and cultural practices will enable nurses to think critically and function at full capacity when interacting and creating treatment plans for patients in a diverse environment.
Native American culture originated in some parts North America. These countries are known as the United States of America and some parts of Canada. In the United States, there are 6.6 million Native Americans, which form about 2.0 percent of the population (Bureau, 2016). Europe had realized there were about 50 million people already living the “new world” and these people were called Native Americans. Native Americans were originally called Indians, but later through history they formed a new name. These people were called this because of them being native to the “new world” and the American part came after the colonist named the United States. Throughout history, Native Americans believed that using raw material in nature was the best way to provide for their people. Their culture thought no part of an animal should go to waste. They would eat the meat, use the skin for clothing, and make jewelry from the bones. Over the years a lot of their culture and customs were lost due to conforming with society. Their languages were referred to as “Indigenous Languages” because of them being extremely complicated and diverse. Some important factors that help understand the foundation of Native American culture are their rituals/practices, death ceremonies, holidays, family, and stereotypes.
Culture, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary is stated as “The integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief and behavior that dpends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations. The customary beliefs, social forms and material traits of a racial, religious or social group. The set shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterizes an institution or organization. The set of values, conventions or social practices associated with a particular field, activity or societal characteristic.” Of these four definitions, I shall be focusing on the second one to discuss what makes up the culture of American Indians. The culture of the various tribes that made up the Native Americans is one of close knit families, highlyspiritual peoples and living together as one with the land they lived on. They believed in spirits, worshiping and honoring them. Some settled into single locations while others were nomadic, but all had a focus on working with the land around them. Because there are so many varying tribes that make up Native
In America, the number of federally identified tribes is 562 with every tribe having its own culture, belief system and practices. That is why there seem diverse type of behaviors among this population related to healthcare seeking and healthcare attitudes. Amongst the most common components that lead to this diversity in healthcare seeking behaviors is the role of culture which affects healthcare intervention, prevention, and care. So, it is very important to understand the diversity of culture in particular
To begin, I learned so much about the Hmong culture, I feel embarrassed how little I knew about them, and what they went through; I have so much more appreciation for them. Coming from a future nurse, I am well aware of the topic “culturally competent”. However, after reading this book I realized how important it actually is to be aware, knowledgeable, and sensitive to those of different cultures. The patient and the patient’s family should be center of the care, with the health care providers having assessed he patient’s needs and wishes. I strong feel that everyone entering the health care field should be formally trained on what it actually means to be culturally competent. If the I health care providers in this book would have been more
This week’s readings, virtual visits, and film, were all excellent insights to the lives of people living in America but in different situations. The two stories that stand out to me most are Franny Kelly and Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins. Kelly wrote about her capture by Native Americans while Hopkins wrote about her travels westward. Kelly, a white girl, expressed her fear of the Native Americans and related them as being savage and barbaric. To describe the Native American lifestyle, Kelly used the term “…to live in barbarous ignorance, and rove the woods among savages...” (1134). She also blatantly states that whites were the “superior race.” During her time with the Native Americans, Franny Kelly seems to be treated rather nicely. She is offered
The world is constantly changing and people are making a strong attempt to keep up. What happens when culture and the ways you know to be true are challenged by the ways of the world? The Native American people faced these, along with many other, challenges as Anglo-American society began to blossom and overtake the area. What challenges have the Diné faced while trying to remain true to their culture, yet reside in a non-native society? It what ways have these experiences altered their way of life for better or worse? Is it possible to be a part of such a swift moving society and hold true to traditional values and culture? The Navajo people have tried the best they can to carry on with traditions, but as the world changes the people must
Native American cultures and societies were without a doubt dynamic. Each society and their culture were comprised of various aspects including: creation stories, morals, beliefs and overall ways of living. Native Americans would base their beliefs on scientific, religious, or mythological studies. Unfortunately, with each society’s different style of living, it would lead to the demise of many tribes. External structural forces are circumstances that are beyond our control. It contains larger forces and institutions that one cannot personally stop. On the contrary, a historical agency is comprised of people who manifest history or history that people brought about. Throughout Native American societies, events occurred that shaped the
Native American Culture should be saved the human people. They need our help to keep the language and traditions alive. The Navajos are going outside the territory to find jobs to support their families because the economy isn’t very good. Like the rest Native American territories they mostly rely on the Federal Government for support. But that isn’t helping them enough with money and resources to keep the culture around.
From these stories, I was able to identify various elements of Native American culture. For example, passing traditions from generation to generation by telling stories, katsina dolls, and zuni fetishes. Native Americans told stories that always had a main theme and key points in order to teach a lesson. This tradition is highly respected in the Native American culture. In my culture, it is a tradition to share stories that teach a lesson or simply explains a myth or legend. Katsina dolls are seen as teaching tools for young Native American children. Parents used them to pass down traditions and values of their tribe to their children. In my culture, this is not normally done. Stories are told, but most of the time dolls or other tools are
Cultural competence is an important aspect of health care, in order to be a fully rounded health care provider it is necessary to understand what others believe and where they come from. The Merriam Dictionary 2016 defines Culture as “The customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group.” Culture is so important to recognize because it can help healthcare providers better understand their patients. Madeleine Leininger a nursing theorist understood the importance of culture and promoted The theory of culture care, according to Nurseslabs (2016) “Culture Care Theory involves knowing and understanding different cultures with respect to nursing and health-illness caring practices, beliefs and values with the goal to provide meaningful and efficacious nursing care services to people according to their cultural values and health-illness context.” (para 1)
For decades, popular media has portrayed Indian Americans in a negative light full of stereotypes and outdated beliefs. This includes newspapers, magazines, songs, and movies. In recent years, such portrayals have improved as more Native Americans become involved in the production of movies. However, these portrayals have not been eliminated, and one glaringly obvious example was released a few years ago. The movie appeared on Netflix and was produced by Adam Sandler. It is called the Ridiculous 6, and it is a huge step backwards for Native American portrayals in media. This movie tends to only show Indians of the past, and not in a good way.
Back in the 18th century the United States was a new a nation when most of the world was divided among the European. There were 6 to 10 million that leave which later divided into several hundred tribes, which different languages. When they start looking of religion and military power most people began to claim the land and lock up new worlds of natural resources to meet their needs. That was one the reason that some of them decided to immigrate to the United States for their freedom. in the beginning of the chapter it mention that they Europeans were strangers to the Americans. The fact that Europeans and Americans were strangers to each wasn’t surprising to me not because they were
