Seven billion people on this earth leave quite a bit of room for diversity. Unique - being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. To be different is something every individual wishes for. This drive to be unique pushes us to boundaries that we would have never seen and to experience we might’ve never been able to be a part of. The drive to unique helps us achieve our ambitions. But the consequences of achieving our ambitions are graver than we previously thought. Walter White, the main character from Breaking Bad, goes from a mediocre high school chemistry teacher to an international meth manufacturer all in the course of five years. This group of people actually harm others and somehow justify the killings, the social disruptions, the sabotages, and many other morally wrong techniques. I am still perplexed at how can they possibly just walk away from such chaos and not feel any regret? Politicians justify their desire for power by “acknowledging the existence of [it] but never applying it to themselves.” (De Waal, 1) They also convince the public that they’re only running for the position to help better the country/state/city. De Waal illustrates his skepticism by asking “Does anyone believe that it’s only for [the public’s] sake that [the politicians] join the mudslinging of modern democracy? Do the candidates themselves believe this? What an unusual sacrifice that would be.” (De Waal, 1) These politicians lie so many times to the public, that even they eventually come to believe that their lies have become the truth. This helps them cope with the fact that their entire foundation and campaign are based solely on fallacies and misleading others. Walter White, on the other hand, only lied to himself and a few select others. However, White committed enough crimes that could land him a jail time of five lifetimes. The fact that he was able to hide all of his emotions and regret in front of everyone around him shows that he had eventually lost all feeling of emotion. White, throughout the whole series and until the last day of his life, always told his wife and family that “I’m doing this for you guys,” while, in reality, he did it for himself. White tells his wife in his last conversation with her that “I did it for myself. It made me feel special.” All of the murders, all of the crimes, all of most evil things one can even think of just to be different, to not be mediocre, to be human.
