Seven billion people on this earth leave quite a bit of room for diversity. Unique - being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. To be different is something every individual wishes for. This drive to be unique pushes us to boundaries that we would have never seen and to experience we might’ve never been able to be a part of. The drive to unique helps us achieve our ambitions. But the consequences of achieving our ambitions are graver than we previously thought. Walter White, the main character from Breaking Bad, goes from a mediocre high school chemistry teacher to an international meth manufacturer all in the course of five years. At the very beginning of his tumultuous journey, he finds out he has developed lung cancer. He is …show more content…
This group of people actually harm others and somehow justify the killings, the social disruptions, the sabotages, and many other morally wrong techniques. I am still perplexed at how can they possibly just walk away from such chaos and not feel any regret? Politicians justify their desire for power by “acknowledging the existence of [it] but never applying it to themselves.” (De Waal, 1) They also convince the public that they’re only running for the position to help better the country/state/city. De Waal illustrates his skepticism by asking “Does anyone believe that it’s only for [the public’s] sake that [the politicians] join the mudslinging of modern democracy? Do the candidates themselves believe this? What an unusual sacrifice that would be.” (De Waal, 1) These politicians lie so many times to the public, that even they eventually come to believe that their lies have become the truth. This helps them cope with the fact that their entire foundation and campaign are based solely on fallacies and misleading others. Walter White, on the other hand, only lied to himself and a few select others. However, White committed enough crimes that could land him a jail time of five lifetimes. The fact that he was able to hide all of his emotions and regret in front of everyone around him shows that he had eventually lost all feeling of emotion. White, throughout the whole series and until the last day of his life, always told his wife and family that “I’m doing this for you guys,” while, in reality, he did it for himself. White tells his wife in his last conversation with her that “I did it for myself. It made me feel special.” All of the murders, all of the crimes, all of most evil things one can even think of just to be different, to not be mediocre, to be human. This self-justification provides an explanation to the heinous deeds people do on a daily
In history, humans have influenced ways to abuse each other in hateful ways. Because of hate, all miserable things that happen to people relates to mob mentality. Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel states, “The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.” Throughout history, humanity has seen dignified people pursuing horrendous actions because these individuals got caught up in mob mentality.
From the moments in the book when we read about the brutal murders of such a benevolent family the killers appear to be nothing more than violent, cold hearted brutes, to be capable of
| Shows no emotion to the murders and crimes that he committed. A heartless selfish man.
In both Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Peter Weir’s Dead Poets Society, the nature of father and son relationships are dependant on communication, the level of compromise that each is willing to give, and how each respond to one another. In the novel, Things Fall Apart, the village of Umuofia is a place where men are no less than warriors, and must fight for their social status. In the movie, Dead Poets Society, Welton is a strict school that has set rules that shall be followed, and if disobeyed, the students will face consequences. Both of these communities have a specific way of life, but both sons attempt to challenge society, and live their own way. However, their fathers are believers of their respective rules, and are ashamed
Some of the characters in the story wanted power but are not willing to do it the appropriate way. Without a doubt, these characters are devious, conniving, back stabbing people. Time and time after they did unimaginable efforts to gain power. More, Brutes and others slaughtered
The following poster was designed by Noah Van Belle to explore the deeper meaning, found in the film The Shawshank Redemption, in just a single and simplistic image. The primary image, which is a rock hammer, represents the motifs of friendship and hope that is displayed throughout the film. The rock hammer is the first item that Andy, the protagonist, obtains from Red, who is also an inmate. This exchange between Red and Andy is the spark of their strong friendship. This friendship proved to be beneficial to Andy not only because he was able to obtain the resources, that he needed for his escape, from Red but he also had a partner to keep him from going insane, in a brutal place such as Shawshank. Red also benefited tremendously from his friendship
Often the people of the mob don’t act in a reasonable way, because they are acting on their uncertainties. After being confronted by his friend Walter who wanted to lynch the prisoner Atticus defended, Atticus said, “‘Mr. Cunningham’s basically a good man, […] he just has his blind spots along with the rest of us’” (210). Another example of people acting cohesively in an uneducated manor would be the results of Tom Robinson’s case, where he was wrongfully convicted of raping Mayella Ewell, by a jury who, (bar one) without considering the defense’s evidence, convicted him because of his race, a gross oversight of justice and logic. In general humans tend to
Throughout Slaughterhouse-Five, Vonnegut chooses to use special literary techniques that better explain his own encounters in war as well as help his readers bare the horridness of war. Vonnegut adds black humor in his text to benefit readers as well as “an author-as-character” perspective to set barriers and help protect his own memories in the war. Without adding these two specific devices, Vonnegut could possibly have lost reader’s interests in the book or lost his own interest in writing the book.
The men within Majors Trapp’s police regiment knew that they were carrying out atrocity, even having internal affairs to the situation, yet they digressed to a primal tactic of grouping together in order to fight for their Authoritative figure. If that is the reaction of humans deemed “ordinary” then where is the divider between evil, pernicious, and vindictive groups or individuals and someone labeled as the opposite of those labels. It’s strange to think that the many people who fit under the umbrella of “normal”, if Browning is correct, are closer to being a contributor to something as horrible as genocide if the governing body turns
In a society of excessive equality, Harrison Bergeron is the one who represents uniqueness through his physical and mental characteristics. Harrison is no ordinary being of society. In fact, he is described as "a genius, an athlete,…and should be regarded as dangerous….Instead of a little ear radio for a mental handicap, he wore a tremendous pair of ear phones, and spectacles with thick wavy lenses….Scrap metal [is] hung all over him….he wear[s] at all times a red rubber ball for a nose, keep[s] his eyebrows shaved off, and cover[s] his even white teeth with black caps at snaggle-tooth random" (Vonnegut 236). His physical appearance alone would definitely offset him from the rest of the crowd. Just by walking down the street, one could sense his greatness by his excessive handicaps. Furthermore, his mental capacity is great enough to override the annoying sounds that the H-G men
Why does a group of people conspire against other groups? To start things off, the word conspire means to plot against another group or person to plan a harmful act. For example, Julius Caesar, long story short in Rome, 44 BC, a group of conspirators plotted against Caesar. They killed him because they wished for a guy name Brutus to be in power instead of Julius and they hate seeing Julius walk around like he was top dog. People who do not believe in conspiracies believe that they are just a coincidence but beyond our view, there are people(white race, upperclassmen, males) in our society that are actively conspiring against others(females, the black race, lower class) to keep them down.
In certain cases, people would follow others blindly into combat during times of war. This is mainly due to fear or trust; nevertheless, during the McCarthy Era and the Salem witch trials, people would follow the same principles. During WWII Master Sergeant Albert Blithe, a career soldier who had been a Private First Class with Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the 101st Airborne Division; he and other men from Easy Company jumped into occupied France as part of the massive Airborne invasion; however, when they landed, they found themselves lost. Blithe was joined by a number of other paratroopers who were also part of the mis-drops. They teamed up together and found the rest of Easy Company. This shows just how willingly some people are to follow others. No matter how people gain their power or how easily they take advantage of others, certain individuals will always find a way to do so. If they do gain this ability, the next step in mob hysteria would be to convict those who have been taken advantage
motive these men have. On the surface, the white men seem to be on a
First and foremost, injustice does not bring true bliss or profit to the extreme unjust person as Gluacon had argued. While it may bring temporary happiness in terms of materialism, it is incapable of providing true fulfillment. Using the analogy of drugs, a drug addict must increase his does every time to achieve the same level of pleasure yet no dose can maintain that pleasure permanently and a large dose can lead to death. Likewise an unjust person who profits from lying, stealing, and killing will not be satisfied with his acquisitions and will always crave for more. After a period of time, the unjust person will become used to all the gold and all the land, which will now seem ordinary, and will thirst for more. Yet losing some of his wealth or power would cause great grief and sadness. A happiness which has to be replenished via suffering of others can never lead to a profitable life since there
Women were always fighting for their rights and freedom, like the two plays are trying to announce a powerful message. Trifles by Susan Glaspell and an episode of Law and Order: SVU is totally different from each other. The first play in 1918 shows how women were housewives to their husbands, and they had not a lot of freedom to do what they want. The second play is more in modern times, but still it has victims of sexual crimes, such as rape and domestic abuse, mostly black woman's.
