Learning Unit Three Analysis Unit three is comprised of chapters ten through fifteen. Within those six chapters there are actually two different sections. Chapters ten and eleven make up the first section about the state. Chapters twelve, thirteen, fourteen, and fifteen create the second section about self and society. The one thing these two sections have in common is they both have to do with people and society. Section three is about the state; how art pertains to the government and war and how art can be used to protest the government. The title of chapter ten is Power, Politics, and Glory. The first chapter in this section is chapter twelve Mind and Body. This chapter focuses on humans as individuals and how artist interpret people and feelings. A good example of this is Vincent Van Gogh’s Portrait of Dr. Gachet. Van Gogh’s style of painting makes the viewer really experience the feelings of Dr. Gachet. Chapter thirteen is about Race, Gender, Clan, and Class. This is an important topic because everyone is born with each of those and it will affect them for their whole lives. An example that sums up this chapter is Marc Chagall’s Over Vitebsk. Chagall was exiled from Russia for being Jewish and this painting is a fictional view of his childhood neighborhood in Russia. Chapter fourteen is about Nature, Knowledge, and Technology. This chapter is important because those three thing are always surrounding us. An example of art from the chapter is Andreas Vesalius of Brussels The Forth Plate of Muscles. This artwork pertains to the chapter because this piece of art came from an old anatomy book so it shows how art and knowledge intersect. The last chapter is fifteen, this chapter is about Entertainment and Visual Culture. These are also topics that are always around us in today’s society.
