“At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security.” This quote by Jodi Rell states the mission of the United States government after the tragic event on September 11, 2001. The nation’s security before nine-eleven was not stern enough to stop a deadly attack from another country. The impact that nine-eleven had on the federal government brought many changes, including the national security. National security is the concept that a government should protect the state and its citizens against national crises. The United States’ national security has become stronger since nine-eleven in areas such as airports, public schools and sporting events.
Airport security has become stricter over the years because of the fear of something
“I'm confident air travel is still the safest method of transportation.” Said Chad Elwood pilot for southwest airline.
According to Jason Villemez of the PBS News Hour, there were immediate changes to airport security following 9/11. Within 2 months of the attacks, the Aviation and Transportation Security Act was passed. This law requires that every single bag is screened at airports andrequires that certain procedures are followed at every airport (Swickard). Before 9/11, scissors, baseball bats, darts, and 4-inch-long blades were allowed, but these are now illegal under the ATSA (O’Connor). The Aviation and Transportation Security Act also created the Transportation Security Administration known as the TSA (Tognotti). Each airport had to supply their own security before 9/11, but with the creation of the TSA, the government supplied security for airports (Villemez). Gabi Logan of USA Today found that the increase in security including baggage checks caused a six percent decrease in the number of passengers. Passengers chose not to travel at all or found a different way to get to their destination. While security in airports was significantly increased, 9/11 also affected millions of Americans involved in the war on terror”.
September 11. 2001 was a major turning point in American History, and its political and social impact can still be felt today. The tragic event shook the entire country on the civilian and federal level. Before 9/11 many did not think that a plan of terrorism such as that of Osama Bin Laden's would be able to come to fruition because they had great trust in American security. The destruction came as a wakeup call to the federal government and American citizens themselves. National Security became the first thing people thought of when they traveled, and civilians looked to the government for reassurance that they were safe. The federal government's plan of action was to pass a series of acts that would go on to create the Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Association. Along with the creation of more strict security measures came the question of "who is a terrorist?" within the country. The formation of the DHS, TSA, and increase of Islamophobia are some examples of the lasting effects that 9/11 had on the country.
As Americans, we the people, as well as our nation are built on past events that have occurred. Sometimes our moods are even based on occuring American events. Currently, some people are ecstatic while others are heartbroken or mournful that our 2017 president-elect is Donald Trump. The election has already dramatically changed and shaped people not only in America, but in countries all around the world. My grandpa is seventy years old and has shared with me three american events that have shaped him into the respectful, thoughtful man he is today. He has been truly touched by meeting John F. Kennedy, the outcomes of the Vietnam War, and the outcomes of nine-eleven. People from different generations see America's identity, as well as their
Since the events of September 11, 2016, many Americans want to know what the government has done or are doing to make America safer and is it working. After America endured attacks or was involved in war, the government made changes to attempt to make the country safer. Some of the most recent changes involve The Patriot Act and changes to our immigration laws. Before we can look ahead to the present, we need to look into the past to see if our government has learned from past bad practices or if they have indeed helped us become more secure as the United States has had its share of surprise attacks.
A visual posted in chapter 7 for the article titled “Is America Safer Now Than Before 9/11” Illustrating current day airport security checkpoints (PA 700). This visual makes multiply bold statements about our current airport security. The image is of multiple security checkpoints at a current day airport, first passport validation check and a personal identity confirmation with the same transportation security administration officer (TSA). Then passengers proceed to unload all of their belongings into a bin to be x-rayed and analyzed by another TSA officer, simultaneous the passengers luggage is also being x-rayed. The line of passengers then winds over to another TSA officer where passengers get manually scanned
9/11 is an event that happened September 11,2001. 2 planes were hijacked and flown into the twin towers where many people were killed. The Americans instantly thought that this was an act of terrorism from the Al-Qaeda terrorist group from Afghanistan and Iraq. An act of terrorism to American is a sign for war with this being said American retaliated. I Thought that the way the retaliation was handled was uncalled for.
You are warned to stand by for an important announcement at fifteen-thirty. Fifteen-thirty! This is news of the highest importance. Take care not to miss it.” (Orwell, 289)
Great post! The creation of Homeland Security itself is very interesting because we were all around for 9/11. We could tell you exactly what we were doing and where we were for this tragic event on our soil. The memory and depending on the person, the feelings will have a strong presence for the rest of our lives. When George W. Bush proposed The Department of Homeland Security in 2002, he was protecting and defending the American people. All of the different levels of government began to work together like never before. The nature of threats on America are ever changing and we required a structure to protect against invisible enemies that could strike at any time, with any weapon.
Although, policy makers typically don’t consider a disaster research in the design of their public policy but some major events such as 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina have led to significant impact on policy changes, while on the other hand some events like the school shootings have not (Birkland and Lawrence, 2009; Lawrence and Birkland, 2004) (Birkland, T. & Warnement, M., 2013, p. 2). Furthermore, there are questions about the policy changes that was triggered by the event was the cure to the problems that was exposed by the event (Birkland, 2009), (Birkland, T. & Warnement, M., 2013, p. 2). For instance, policy changes from 9/11 geared towards criminal law and governmental investigatory powers were not the answer in regards to fixing
The similarity of the government reaction during the time after WWII during the Cold War and post 9/11 was because the government took some certain steps by creating some Acts to protect the country. The difference between the reaction after WWII during the cold war was based mostly on economic sanctions like the Battle Act which refused to give assistance to any country that does not embargo strategic goods in addition to oil. While that of the post 9/11 focused mostly on the safety and security, for example, the Aviation and Transportation Security Act and the Enhanced Border Security and Entry Reform Act, Post-9/11 G.I.bill and James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 which provided funding benefits for the soldiers and people
On September 11, 2001, a devastating attack took place. In just a few hours lives
There were each steps that was taken during the September 11 attacks. Each President has taken steps in response to these terrorist threats. President George W. Bush gave the people hope after the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 attacks. During the attack, President Bush insisted that he want to return to the White House instead of being held up in the bunker to give the American people confidence to know that he is charge. President Bush did really wonderful job in speaking for and to the American people. According to George W. Bush’s essay on Impact and Legacy, President Bush signed this Act into law called the USA PATRIOT Act, which gave the government vast new powers in the effort to combat future acts of terror. It also sparked
After the attacks on the world trade center in September 11th, american society felt vulnerable as many citizens felt unsafe living in their own homes wondering whether there would be further terrorist attack. The fear of further terrorist attacks weren't only within ordinary citizens but also in politicians, as a result US government implemented laws which
The September 11th attacks have had a profound effect on American history. Often referred to as “9/11”, these attacks were comprised of a group of organized terrorists known as Al-Qaeda. This extreme Islamic group assaulted several landmarks in New York City, Washington D.C, and the state of Pennsylvania. In New York City, two airliner jets were hijacked with passengers aboard and slammed into the World Trade Center. “The next attack resulted in a plane colliding into the Pentagon, government building; the last attack was in Pennsylvania when a plane crashed into a field. In total, 3,000 people died on September 11th, 2001” (History.com Staff). The September 11th-attacks have affected airport security by the new training of flight attendants, the formation of the Transportation Security Administration and new technical advances to keep up with increased terror threats.
