I can relate to Updike’s A&P insights about Human nature and society from my own observational experience of traveling to different cities and seeing different cultures, also by movies that have similar lessons such as Scarface and Equilibrium. Some lessons and observations I’ve learned are that people tend to follow the crowd, different cities have different cultures, and people always dream of higher living. The Story of Updike’s A&P makes a profound statement about human nature by, showing how the main character Sammy observes people in a supermarket have been conditioned to conform.
Updike’s or Sammy’s first observation about human nature is that people tend to follow the crowd just as sheep in a herd, people don’t decide for themselves compared to a black sheep. “The sheep pushing the carts down the aisle - the girls were walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one-way signs or anything)” (Updike A&P pg.18) A movie called Equilibrium has a similar lesson about people conditioned to conform. In this movie society has been drugged to suppress emotions only to follow the rules of the society. If they show any emotion they will be executed. Sammy is similar to the main character in Equilibrium since they are both black sheep, who don’t follow the crowd and welcome new ideas. …show more content…

“We want you decently dressed when you come in here.” “We are decent,” … she remembers her place, a place from the crowd that runs the A&P must look pretty crummy.”(Updike A&P pg.20) I can relate to Sammy from my experience of when I lived in New Braunfels where there’s a river, and it was normal to see people walk around in their bathing suit.
