Puritans were people who came from England to express their religion. When they made it to America the future generations started to stray from their belief. In 1666 and 1741 two writers tried to use two different scare tactics to get them back in good graces with God. They both mainly focused on eternal life, human moral weakness, relationship between God and person, and religious beliefs. Eternal Life is something we as humans all all Puritans strive to have. Who would not want to see God? In Bradstreet's poem “ Upon the Burning of Our House”, she compares her home to the Heaven above. “ My hope and treasure lies above”(54). She gave all of her faith into her home and trusted that because her home was “ in order” that God would accept her completely. However the Lord said “ Set thine house in order, for thou shalt die and not live” (Isaiah 38:1). When the Lord said this to his people, he didn’t actually want them to go home and clean, but to get their personal selves together before God returns. Bradstreet took that line to literal; however, Edwards knew the true meaning. In Edwards “Sinners In the Hands of An Angry God”, “God will have no other use to put you to, but to suffer misery” (p.11). When you put other things before Jesus he becomes jealous. He wants to be the only spiritual guidance …show more content…
Puritans believed that God takes everything that youthey put before him away, so that youthey can reconnect with him. Edward and Bradstreet tried to save their people from that tragedy. In contrast, Edward used a more “scare straight” tactic, while Bradstreet used more subtle “learn from my mistakes” tactic. Both are effective ways to get the Puritans to hear them. However, being threaten to going straight to Hell or losing everything are great ways to catch people’s eye; on the other hand, would that change the way you have gotten accustomed to things? No, because as humans, they find a way to justify their unruly
Puritans are intense religious people, they do things in order from God to their own personal challenges, while still keeping God in their minds at all times. Anne Bradstreet is a Puritan who had just lost her house due to a fire. Her approach to this story is a calm and loveable approach. Jonathan Edwards is another Puritan but he is much more intense with informing people about God. He puts God before anyone and everything just like any other puritan would do. Edwards approach to this story is violent and brutal, he tells everyone in his story’s who are sinners that they will be held over fires by God.“ Here Follow Some Verses Upon The Burning of Our House”and “Sinner In The Hands Of An Angry God” are both very similar in some ways and different
The Puritans were a religious group in the New England colonies who wanted to purify the Church of England. The Puritans centered everything on God, even their judicial system. They had a theocratic system, which means they thought God had the overall authority. Their laws, court system, and punishments were all based on the Bible. The puritan era judicial system was a theocratic, unjust, and harsh system that enforced absurd laws; they practiced an unfair way of prosecution, and gave cruel punishments to the peccant.
Puritans believe God has an influence on humans in our daily life. Edwards asserts, “His mere pleasure that keeps you from being this moment swallowed up in everlasting destruction” (81). This quote explains to us that God’s forgiveness holds us from, at any second, dropping down into the deep depths of hell. God observes our life and helps us every step of the way by pushing us as much as he can in the right direction. Edwards believes, “And yet it is nothing but His hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment” (81). Edwards for the second time says something relatively about God’s hand and how He is the one who holds us and keeps us out of the fiery pits. This quote shows us how God’s pleasure keeps us from falling into a
In Huswifery, by Edward Taylor, he says, “My words and actions, that their shine may fill/ my waves with glory and thee glorify.”(Taylor lines 15-16) He is saying that if God fills his life with his spirit and help him become the best he can be, then he will glorify and praise him. In “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” it states in the first paragraph when talking about God's wrath, “Yea, God is a great deal more angry with great numbers that are now on earth….”(Edwards 124) The author is writing about how God is all powerful and he can decide if you go to hell or heaven. In a life as a Puritan, literature was all about glorifying God and education. They did not believe in
The Puritans were a group of fundamentalist people. This meant that they led a life that was to be followed as God put in the bible..For instance, in Exodus 22:18 (Doc A.) it is stated, “‘Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live’”,in the eyes of the Puritans this simple phrase translates into this idea that witches exist and that they must then be eliminated because they caused the Puritan life to be stained and impure.. Although, the Bible does not state how to identify a witch, in the eye of the fundamentalist Puritan anyone could be a witch. This caused the Salem Witch
A Puritan defined is “a member of a group of English Protestants of the late 16th and 17th centuries who regarded the Reformation of the Church of England under Elizabeth as incomplete and sought to simplify and regulate forms of worship.” Puritan society in America depended on the belief that all members were working for the glory of God. The Puritans did not allow deviations from the strict code of behavior which would not allow any member to have individuality. They restricted any type of entertainment, except that which was endorsed by the church. They worked and worshipped.
To begin with, Puritans were colonists who wanted to seek religious strength. It was a sin and against the law to not attend a church mass. It was also against the law to pursue any type of witchcraft because the was known to correlate
The Puritans were a group of people with strong beliefs, ideas and values in the 1630’s to the 1660’s. Their ideas influenced society in multiple ways during this time including politically, economically, and socially. Politically, they believed in having a theocratic government , economically, they used the value of hard work to run the economy and stimulate prosperity and also, socially the influence of the religion and the need for a tight knit communtiy influenced New England in many more ways than one. All of these influences were part of the ideological belief of the Puritans to attain a “City Upon a Hill” society where they would have the perfect community and established ethos for other communities to later follow in their footsteps.
New England colonies developed rapidly throughout the early 1600s and the Puritans helped found most of those colonies. They were Christian group who fled from Europe to escape persecution from the Church of England and the ruling class. They originated from a movement for reform in the Church of England and came with certain values and ideas. They believed that God wanted them to set a good example that would cause those who had remained in England to reform their “sinful” ways and pretty much wanted to be the example community (The City upon a Hill) (Doc A). Over time the aspects of the Puritan’s lifestyles slowly integrated into American culture like strong work ethics and the importance of education in society. They are part
Puritans were families from England that followed John Winthrop and his idea of reforming their religion in Massachusetts and spreading their beliefs. Colonists who joined the voyage were those who had disapproved on the way the Church of England went against the will of god and still had some of the rituals practiced by the Roman Catholic Church. Winthrop believed the failure of other colonies was their sins and how god disapproved upon them for their actions.
The Puritans were classified as a group of people who had become unhappy with the church of England. The three reasons were because of their religion, moral and social reforms. John Calvin gave rise to Protestantism, the church of England had political struggles. Puritans believed that the Bible was Gods true law. They basically wanted to “purify” themselves and the church. Puritans believed in a second life, that is why they want to constantly do good. Every evil had to do with the devil.
The puritans were a religious group came from England and settled in Massachusetts Bay. They believed that the Anglican Church needed to be reformed and purified of catholic influence. Believed in education in puritan communities, literacy was quite high because they believed everyone should know how to read the bible. They also believed in higher education and founded Harvard in 1636 as a school to educate men to become ministers.
The Puritan’s were a group of English Protestants that left England to seek religious freedom in the sixteenth century. They had deep religious beliefs, and it was their mission to convert as many people as possible to become Christians. “The Puritans in Massachusetts were placed “as a city upon a hill” to create a model of success and prosperity that would light the way for the rest of humankind” (Perkins 103). The Puritan's believed in predestination, that everything is God’s plan. They believed everything happens for a reason and were a lesson. They lived simply and rejected the worldly luxuries. Everything they did was connected somehow to the work of God. “The Puritans believed God both favored and tested them” (Perkins 103). In their theology, they believed they must overcome temptation in order to earn salvation (Perkins 103).
The Puritans were a group of "congregationalists" that didn't support the Anglican church because the church was too "catholic".They also believed reformation was needed and an egalitarian environment was necessary.
Wigglesworth not only described the unfavorable side of sin, but he also included in his poem the reward of sustaining from it. Sustaining from sin was far harder than it seemed but “the regenerate would reign with Christ eternally” (Baym, and Levine 239). The Day of Doom speaks to the hearts and minds of all believers who sacrificed their “earthly” lifestyles in order to gain something more joyous than what couldn’t possibly be received here on earth. The Puritans believed “God was at the forefront of their minds, He was to motivate all of their actions” (Kizer). This is why Wigglesworth voice about salvation in his poem spoke loud in reference to the precious reward of salvation. He not only wanted his readers to picture what it would be like to enter the Kingdom of Heaven but to realize that it is far better than entering the Kingdom of Hell. In stanza 221 he use words such as glorious, divine and bright to persuade us that Heaven is definitely where you want to end up after ascending from earth. “O glorious place! Where face to face/Jehovah may be seen, /By such as were sinners whilere/and no dark veil between. /Where the sun shine, and light divine, /of God’s bright countenance, /Doth rest upon them everyone, /with sweetest influence” (1761-1768). As a minister,
