In the story, “Hills like White Elephants,” Doris Lanier uses Absinthe an alcohol beverage which we think is an average drink, soon becomes a clue for the point in the story; abortion. The girl references Absinthe in the story because she believes there is a connection between the drink and why their relationship is falling apart. Absinthe is a symbol representing hatred. This is the reason why she responds to the man in a very sarcastic and smart-aleck way. “Everything taste of licorice. Especially all the thing you’ve waited so long for, like absinthe.” In other words, what she’s trying to say is the man can wait for the alcoholic beverage for quite some time but does not have the patience to wait for the girl’s pregnancy.
