In the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” Martin Luther King uses ethos and rhetorical questions to advocate for civil disobedience. For example MLK uses rhetorical questioning in this sentence when he says, “Isn’t this like condemning the robbed man because his possession of money precipitated the evil act of robbery?”(King pg. 8) This question demands no answer but it’s obvious who is right morally. Martin Luther’s rhetorical question is a counter-argument against the clergy men’s opposition of demonstrations. The question directly relates to the problem and gives insight on MLK’s organized demonstrations and how he’s not in the wrong because the demonstrations might precipitate violence.
