Van Gogh moved to Arles in 1888, where he wanted to start a colony of artists who would all live and create together (Department of European Paintings). This community did not actually come together because no one went to work with van Gogh. However, Vincent’s hero Paul Gauguin did visit and work with him. When van Gogh heard of this news, he became excited and optimistic. In preparation for Gauguin’s visit, he created a series of bright yellow sunflower paintings. It was his intention to decorate Gauguin’s room in the Yellow House which he had rented with the paintings (Sooke; Wiggins). The blue lines separating the different shades of yellow in the painting might be a reference to Gauguin’s work as this is similar to a technique he sometimes used (Sooke). Gauguin did stay and work with van Gogh for several months (Wiggins). He loved the paintings of sunflowers. These works impressed him and even asked Vincent if he could keep one (Van Gogh Museum). However, the two did not work well together, nor did they get along. Gauguin worked from his imagination and tried to convince van Gogh to paint this way too. However, van Gogh needed a reference to base his works off of and could not simply use his imagination. Van Gogh made paintings of sunflowers in vases in total, though three are copies of his own work (Wiggins). Of the four original paintings, one is in the Neue Pinakothek in Germany, the one featured here is from the National Gallery in London, one was destroyed in World

How would it feel to live your life as a failure, but after your death be praised by all? The real Vincent Van Gogh was an artist who had nothing and gave up on life. Many people viewed him as a tenacious and mysterious artist. He died a tragic death feeling like an artistic failure due to a couple of reasons. The first reason was because there were no cures for the mental problems, such as depression, insanity, and epilepsy, that ran in the family. Because of his depression, he felt like an artistic failure, not knowing the fame he would later gain. Van Gogh died as an unknown artist with little money and no cure for an issue that was common throughout his family.
Around 1890, an artist by the name of Vincent Van Gogh who present day is one of the most renowned artists created magnificent, yet mysterious drawings which he started with just a pencil. From his pencil drawings with lines and dashes to the beautiful variations with using paint, Vincent was a genius, but was never congratulated on his work until later. Even as he was pronounced crazy, he could still create beautiful works of art which shows how even a flower can bloom in a dark forest. As his life was slowly being painted on canvas from the years of solitude and psychiatric problems he finally killed himself which a couple years later brought up his artwork through his own suicide.
Vincent Willem Van Gogh was a Dutchman born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. The Starry Night is one of Van Gogh’s famous paintings in the world. It was believed that his painting was the view from his bedroom window. After a petition was signed saying Vincent Van Gogh was dangerous, they moved him to an asylum. He lived in a hospital where he suffered occasional relapse into delusions. While he was there, he was able to read, paint and withdraw from his room. As he was going through depression, Van Gogh then began to have hallucinations and even have thoughts of suicide. His art helped him stay emotionally balanced. He then started to paint The Starry Night, and used dark colors. For example, in the painting he clearly paints all the buildings dark and black and paints the stars and the moon brighter to make it stand out more. In his painting, he included a cypress tree which is usually found in cemeteries and represent mourning. There were rumors about his death, saying he had died because his illness
Imagine a life where reality is distorted and the only true companion to walk through life with are paints, brushes, and a blank canvas beckoning the artist to reveal his truth. This is the life and reality of famed artist Vincent van Gogh. The artist led a tragic and depressing existence from a young child, which continued throughout his adult years until his early departure at the young age of 37. Van Gogh left behind a legacy of beautiful and interpretive paintings, which express appealing landscapes, delicate flowers, and humanity in their surroundings. It begs the question, how could a gifted artist depict and interpret society so well in his paintings but have an inability to make personal connections
After travelling and getting support on painting by other artists and learning Impressionist art styles and ideals, Van Gogh started to paint the natural world. From 1886 to 1889, Van Gogh painted himself 43 times. After severing a part of his left ear during a mental breakdown, Van Gogh started to paint himself from the right instead of the left. Near the end of his life, Van Gogh’s mental health started to degrade further and was admitted to an asylum. His later works include portraits, a series of cypresses, a series of flowering orchards, a series of flowers, and a series of wheat fields. In June 1889, while in an Asylum at Saint-Remy, Van Gogh painted what is regarded as his finest work of art, The Starry
As odd as it sounds, Vincent was born exactly one year after his mother’s stillborn, also named Vincent. One thing that saddened van Gogh was seeing his deceased brother’s headstone with his name and birthdate already engraved into it.
Vincent took the already brilliant colors known for this movement and intensified them. He used complementary colors to add contrast; you can see the blue of the street in the distance enhances this in the “sulphur yellow” of the terrace. Another aspect of the painting that was popular for the post-impressionist movement is the impasto or thickly applied paint on the canvas. An artist similar to Van Gogh was Paul Gauguin, one of Van Gogh’s many inspirations and dear
Vincent Van Gogh painted many figures, landscapes, cityscapes, and sceneries during the post-impressionism art movement. He used lighter palettes of reds, yellows, oranges, greens, and blues. Van Gogh also experimented with broken brushstrokes. The work of impressionists inspired Van Gogh during his trip to Paris. Influenced by a fellow artist, Gauguin, Van Gogh began to paint from memory, making his paintings more decorative and less accurate. His unique techniques inspired many artists including Matisse, Derain, Pollock, and Bacon. Each of these artists adopted/extended Van Gogh’s style to preserve his techniques.
The flow of the white brushstrokes in the sky seems to give the painting its feel of
Vincent van Gogh is one of the most celebrated, renowned, and mysterious artists in the world today. Although he was an artist for the majority of his life he achieved almost all of his fame posthumously. This fame is not due exclusively to his remarkable artwork, as his life history, rife with mental illness, fascinating stories, and utter woe, contributes immensely to his eminence. When people pay tens or hundreds of millions of dollars for one piece, they are not just buying mere oil on canvas. They are buying the man behind the painting, the history and experiences that brought him to want to express the human condition in every brushstroke. Unfortunately his life has been romanticized to the point where fact blurs with fiction which overshadows the actual artwork. Therefore if I could have dinner with van Gogh I would love to learn about the true van Gogh from himself.
