Venice gives you the illusion that the whole city is floating on water. The Venetians built Venice because they needed sanctuary. They were trying to flee from barbarians, and the way Venice is shaped made it very difficult for invaders to come in Venice. A lot of people think Venice was built on islets, but it really wasn’t. Venice is completely supported by platforms of wood. These wooden platforms are kept intact by more structures that are in the sea. The Venetians placed all the wooden platforms because Venice’s structure was not sturdy enough to even hold up a building. The strategy put into building Venice was extraordinary. Building Venice was most definitely not a fun or easy process. One of the most famous churches took about 1,106,657 wooden platforms to complete it! Every platform is about 11.2 inches long. Even though creating buildings was very hard, Venice is full of gorgeous architecture. It is truly amazing how much hard work was put into every building. Books have been written in extreme detail about how Venice was built. Not many people would’ve guessed Venice’s foundation is wood! Venice did not have any forests, so the Venetians got wood from the mountains of Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia. Venice basically sits on a group of small islands. Venice has one-hundred and eighteen islands in all. Venice sinks into the sea at a rate of two millimeters a year. Venice rests on a peninsula that consists of
The beautifully known country of Italy had been a modern nation state for hardly half-century and the Kingdom of Italy was not declared until 1861. King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia, after the efforts of the great Italian statesman Camillo Benso di Cavour and the military campaigns of Giuseppe Garibaldi. “The young state of Italy faced many problems in the late 19th and early 20th centuries” (Sailus, 2016). The split nature of its beginnings caused massive differences in terms of regional wealth, education, and infrastructure.
I would always take walks after fights with my family, and it’s not as if I was going to change that in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I left our hotel, the Bauer Palazzo, stepping onto the Calle Tredici Martiri. One of the things I loved about Venice were the names of the streets and canals. I didn’t understand the meaning, nor was I able to pronounce it with ease, but when I heard them spoken my heart melted. People said that French is the language of love, but Italian is infinitely times more beautiful. We were booked to leave Venice for Marseille tomorrow, but I refused. That’s what lead to this fight with my parents. They didn’t like being in Italy. They grew up in Milan, but they left as soon as they were able to. The

During the medieval times, Florence and Siena were wealthy cities. This prosperity was shown to the neighboring towns and citizens through the arts and architectures that ushered in the new Renaissance era. Florence was a much more popular area, with many large sights to view. Even so, Siena endured the challenge of not being engulfed in the shadow of Florence by perfecting its’ own charm and splendor. Even though these cities were so close to each other, they did a great job of getting along while expressing their own individuality.
Italy is a boot-shaped peninsula located in the Mediterranean Sea. Italy also includes the notable islands Sicily and Sardinia. Italy’s interesting geography impacts its agricultural industries and overall economy.
The play by William Shakespeare, Othello, The Moor of Venice, was staged for the first time in 1604, is defined as a tragedy, and Othello as a tragic hero.
In the play Othello, the Moor of Venice by William Shakespeare, the women take on various roles in this Venetian society. The roles include committing fraud, playing the part of the victim, and playing the part of the hero. In this Venetian society in the 1600s, the women served major purposes and were vital to keep the towns running. However, the women also faced being victimized and stereotyped in this man-run society. Women were inferior to men, treated unequally, and women were also viewed as sexual objects rather than human-beings. The play demonstrates how women were wrongfully treated in this Venetian society and how women are expected to be subordinate to men. In the end, a play seemingly riddled with negativity and degradation of women becomes a piece of work that shows the courageousness and truthfulness that the women in the play possess. With women playing a large role in the play, Othello can be differently interpreted from a feminist perspective.
Italy, the place where thousands of people go to get away from their normal lives, has been facing many struggles of its own. The ancient buildings, rivers, and popular attractions make Italy look like a perfect, easy living society. Yet, Italy has lots of problems, from governmental money issues to the everyday lives of people. Italy’s economy is continuing to get worse, causing the European and other country’s people to worry.
The visual imagery of Carpaccio's The Lion of Saint Mark admirably crafts an image of Venetian expansionist propaganda as justified by the myth of Venice. The myth of Venice revolves around the notion that Venice, or the "self-proclaimed Most Serene Republic," was an ideal political entity set apart by God through its founding rooted in the story of Saint Mark (Rosand 2). Francesco Sansovino, a Venetian author, expressed the core of the myth of Venice when he wrote “thanks to the peace Christ had offered Mark, peace was brought to Venice and thanks to this peace, the Republic had grown to large proportions” (Grasman 129). Venetians such as Sansovino believed that Venice was peaceful because of the divine recognition by Christ at the city's founding.
Earthquakes in nature are caused by the moving of tectonic plates and the inner layers of Earth, and Aschenbach’s sight of Tadzio parallels this, because it is as if Aschenbach’s inner emotions are changing (“The Science of Earthquakes”). He is beginning to think differently, and he describes Tadzio with so much detail, that only another artist would understand. Right before Aschenbach sees Tadzio, he gazes at the water, seeking comfort, as evidences by, “His love of the sea had profound roots”(Mann 318). Venice is known for its many waterways. In the context of Death in Venice, the waterways parallel the different pathways people take during their lives. The waterways could also parallel the veins within Aschenbach’s body. The actual altitude of Venice, Italy is much lower than that of Munich, Germany, which supports the idea that Venice was a better place for Aschenbach as far as for creativity (“A View On Cities”). The higher altitude of Munich parallels the higher barriers that Aschenbach faced while he was there. Being at a higher altitude, would mean there is less usable air to breath, which can be compared to Aschenbach’s lack of inspiration. In Munich, Aschenbach was expected to be an excellent writer, because of his previous works. There were more scenarios for Aschenbach to fail in Munich, whereas in Venice, he was free to experiment with his new found feelings. Venice served as
When you hear people talk about Venice Italy, the first thing that pops in mind are the Venetian canals and the Gondolas. All of the beauty in the buildings and architecture around the lagoon, and all of the different restaurants and market stands. The culture itself thrives off one another in this beautiful city. But threw all of Venice’s beauty, there is a major problem that the lagoon faces, and that is that the lagoon is slowly sinking.
?As the Roman Empire was crumbling in Italy, Huns, Goths, and Lombards began invading towns in the north.? Citizens of Padua, Verona, and Vicenza were forced to travel to the islands of the lagoon.? The most influential invasion occurred in 452 when Attila the Hun drove everyone out of Venetia and they settled ?on the muddy, reed-covered islands of the Rivo Alto.?9? Alethea Wiel claims that the residents of Venezia decided to ?fix an abiding and permanent dwelling-place among the isles and estuaries of the sea; and that moment may be looked upon as the date of the foundation of Venice.?10? The newcomers discovered a thick layer of clay was under the islands.? They put down wooden piles into the clay, then covered these with oak logs and rocks to create the foundation of Venice:? ?it is strange to think how from the shifting unstable formation of mud-bands and sand-isles a city would arise, whose beauty would remain unequalled.?11?
