Romanticism was an art movement that developed in the late eighteenth century and lasted for about one hundred years. Romanticism is a rejection of the traditional values of reason, order, and objectivity that characterized Classicism and Enlightenment, in particular Neoclassicism. For the romantic artist, Neoclassical principles hindered the artist’s vision and creativity. Rather, the romantic artist emphasized and valued intuition, juxtaposing emotions, and imagination. Generally, Britain and Germany were seen at the forefront of romanticism. The British Industrial Revolution initiated a disillusionment in rationalism and materialism, consequently rejecting classicism.

Given that the Industrial Revolution had impacted all forms of society, including how people thought, felt, worked, and related to each other, it would not be totally crazy to think that such a change might have been the reason why Romanticism was quickly adopted. Romanticism as a reaction to the hyper-active period of change might have been the only way to deal with the backlash of the Enlightenment's scientific thoughts and concerns. Romanticism gave people spontaneity, the chance to dream again, to explore fantasy, whereas the Enlightenment made everything predictable, taking the fun out of life. First expressed by the English poets, these ideals of Romanticism spread to other artistic models, such as art and music, and on to other countries. Because of this, the value of the arts, emotions and the value of the individual was able to reestablish a place in the minds and practices of people and society.

Romanticism (also called Romantic Era or Romantic period) was a complex artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in the second half of the 18th century in Europe, and developed in reaction to the Industrial Revolution. In part, it was a movement against various social and political norms and ideas of the Age of Enlightenment. It strongly influenced the visual arts, music, and literature, but it had impact on education and natural history as well.

Frederick Delius was a post-Romantic English composer. Born on January 29, 1862, Delius was the black sheep of his mercantile family, resisting the pressure to join the family business in pursuit of becoming a composer. Delius lived until June 10, 1934, when he died in Grez, France. Delius’ early compositions displayed an influence from the styles in America at the time, and inspiration from European composers such as Richard Wagner. As Delius matured, he developed his own unique style that is characterized by the use of chromatic harmony.

Whitman was able to change people’s views on life and was able to give people something that they wanted and were looking for in his creation of a new writing style. His writing about real life experiences connected him well with the common man, which is another aspect of the Romantic period. Whitman is also thought of as the “father of free verse.” He enjoyed using free verse because it could further distinguish him from other writers of the past, and of his time.

Victor Hugo was a novelist, poet, and dramatist. He is one of the most important of French Romantic writers. His best-known works are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserable.

Romanticism was a movement that swept over all of Europe; it affected all areas of life and society, not only just literatruture. At its base was a belief in the rights of man and this impetus led to two enormously important resolutions: the American Revolution and the French Resolution. Romanticism does not only mean romantic love, it is a literary term characterized by elements. Some elements of romanticism are growth of industrialization, mingling of races, frontier, experimentation, and optimism. One of the writers that include romanticism in their writings is Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly.

Eugene Delacroix, born on April 26 1798, was a French painter who had a lot of influence on Romanticism. He studied art at age 17 and academic painter, Baron Pierre-Narcisse Guerin, mentored him. He learned from the romantic Landscapist and used some of their techniques. Early on in his life, he demonstrated the influence that Michelangelo and Peter Paul Rubens, two excellent artists, had on his painting. Delacroix intensely studied Michelangelo’s modeling of figures and the matter of life or death he brought to the canvas. He was also deeply affected by Rubens ' treatment of color. Romantic artist play around with emotions, divinity found in nature and the sense of creativity or imagination. He developed his own style over the years and had a unique approach with color. His style was to show pain and suffering in his work through bright colored canvases which exploded with energy.
