Technology nowadays has become a tremendous part of children’s everyday life. The biggest part of technology that children are mostly consumed by is video games. Video games were introduced back in the 1970s, which consisted of games such as Pong, that didn’t contain much graphics. Then starting in the late 1980s, video games started to become more developed in ways such as the graphic was in much better quality than before because of the advancement in technology. With increasing development in graphics, it made the video games much more realistic than ever before, and made video games as popular as they are now. Today approximately 90% of children spend about one-third of their day with some form of electronic device (Agarwal 38). …show more content…
Technology has been progressing more and more into the classroom recently and there could be a possibility video games being added in as well. Educational video games can help students be more successful in the classroom because in some classes the life version versus the book version is a major difference in learning abilities. This is because learning for visual than threw a textbook can help students remember and understand a lot easier. Another way of teaching in the future is the possibility through a Kinect camera (Bernstein). Using this kind of deceive could help students understand subjects such as science and math easier because this camera could be in 3D. Even though this is just in the developing stage and just starting to being tested, it could help students learn better which would mean an improvement in academic grades. Lastly, playing video games can help young people improve their development skills. Playing video games can actually help improve young people’s timing as well as their hand-eye coordination. There was a study that involved laparoscopic surgeon, surgery that was performed with a laparoscope that makes a small incision to examine the abdominal cavity, who either played video games in their childhood or now. During this study it had actually showed that the surgeon who had either
"Researchers at the University of Rochester found that young adults who regularly played action-based video games showed better visual skills than those who didn't" (USA Today). Researchers have also found that the subjects who played video games "were better able to keep track of objects appearing simultaneously and processed fast-changing visual information more efficiently" (USA Today). Video games have made it a long way from when they first started. Some games actually teach children how to read, write, and even count. Teenagers also state that a little gaming after school actually helps take some stress off from classes and the overload of homework.
Do you remember the first time you played a video game? Was it Super Mario Brothers, Call of Duty, or Minesweeper? How about the time your parents told you that video games will rot your brain? Well forget all that, this paper is going to tell you the benefits of playing video games. My claim is that video games can help you with leadership skills, problem solving, education, and cognitive function.
Bowen, Lisa. Video game play may provide learning, health, social benefits, review finds. American Psychological Association. February 2014. Vol 45, No. 2. Print version: page 10.
Over the past few decades, video games have been a source of entertainment around the globe. Many people have argued that video games are harmful to children and young adults, while others have argued otherwise. Research has shown that video games has many benefits. These include cognitive, social, and emotional benefits.
Video games can have positive, therapeutic effects on players of all ages, especially those with mental or emotional problems. Games provide a chance to tune out the stresses of everyday life and decompress. Giving your mind time to rest is critical for emotional and mental well-being. Relaxation reduces the risk of heart problems and stroke, boosts memory, buffers against depression, and helps decision making. It even has physical health benefits, by suppressing
They can be played by anybody including children, and adults, for relaxing and enjoyment not only in free time but also during work time. The author adds a section in this chapter, that explains how the video game industry is on the rise and cites studies that show how games enhances work performance. One study that the author reports is that "physicians who spent at least three hours a week playing games made about 37 percent fewer mistakes in laparoscopic surgery and performed the task 27 percent faster than their counterparts who did not play" (Pink, page
Video games have become a very popular hobby that anyone can obtain the skill at any point of people’s lives. Video games are a game played by electronically influencing images produced by a computer program on a television screen. In October 1958, William Higinbotham has created the very first videogame. Studies have shown that video games are actually healthy, and these studies can prove wrong what the older generations assume about video games. Although, older people that grew up with a different hobby that was not video games, there many things that videogames can help improve certain skills a human can strengthen.
Video games can train the human brain so it become strong and faster at thinking. Since video games have fast action paced content, they become a virtually gym for your brain. Also, because of the action in a game there are a lot of eye hand coordination and quick problem solving skills involved in playing a game. The article “Are video games bad for me?” says“... can improve eye-hand coordination, problem solving skills, and the mind’s ability to process information.” This quote shows the many quick skills one person can improve by playing video games such as eye hand coordination, problem solving skills and the mind’s ability to process information. The quick skills that are need to play video games can be practiced and learned by play video games. Considering this, the number of things video games can teach children are
Video games are “a waste of time” they don 't actually improve anything, they are just entertainment. However there is drastic evidence to show that couldn’t be further from the truth. They actually have a huge mental benefit that can enhance memory, better hand to eye coordination and enhanced reflexes along with other things aswell. Showing that they are indeed not just a time killer and waster but are hugely benefiting the minds of the people that play them. The first point I would like to bring up is enhanced memory, a study suggests that young children can benefit from the memory aspects of video games. Several children had multiple sessions of several video games with increases challenge and it had been noted that they did show signs of progress in the difficulty but more importantly an increase in a strong memory showing that the two indeed have a connection. Secondly hand to eye coordination, another study was conducted and yet again the gamer who repeatedly played games was faster, sharper and overall better than the non-gamer. The other main point is reflexes which sort of ties in with the other points but deserves another mention, research indicates that fast-paced gameplay along the lines of Call of Duty and other various games, does in fact increase reflexes.
In this world today kids can play video games on about anything such as computers, phones, Tvs, and game consoles. The most useful gaming device that is used today by children all over the world is the cell phone, children can access it easily without having to plug it up to a Tv or deal with any cords other than the charger. “Researchers gave 12-year-old gamers tests that asked them to draw, tell stories, ask questions and make predictions. All of the kids had high levels of creativity and curiosity”(Morin).
There are many benefits to playing video games. Some parents and/or educators can use video games as a tool to subconsciously teach and reinforce learning methods. Educational games and games that requires skillful thinking are tools that can help academically. Merzenich (2011) explains in his research that games can help with judgement, memory, cognitive thinking, and higher speeds in skill processing. He gives reasoning behind the academic growth of children that are gamers and how they acquire academic success due to the excessive time they spend playing.
There are also many studies that show how video games increase peripheral perception, processing speed, and memory (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). Also, depending on the type of video game a particular person is playing, it can be used as an effective training scenario(Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). The idea here is that video games can be used as a productive tool for people of all ages, professions, and lifestyles, if they are utilized correctly (Bavelier, Green, Han, Renshaw, Merzenich, & Gentile, 2011). An issue that may come up is trying to find the happy area in the middle of the people who don’t use games at all and the ones that are using them excessively and becoming
When playing video games, the coordination and concentration can physically, socially, and mentally benefit the user. Research today shows that certain video games can reduce fat and therefore promote weight loss. Other sources state that doctors have instructed parents to let their children play video games to help control focus. It is found that video games can improve hand eye
Today, many tend to believe that videogames have major negative effects on the brain and a person’s well being. People and scientists believe that videogames can be addictive after a while, they can make children antisocial, and they negatively influence young children and teens. Although many like to believe that videogames are more harmful than helpful, there are actually more positives than negatives. With video games, kids learn quick thinking, multitasking, problem solving, logic, and much more. In fact, some schools have adopted the idea of offering game design in the library as a way to help enhance children and teens thinking. These are just a few of the many traits that kids will need later on in life.
Central idea: Video games are beneficial for students in the classroom and home. Using video games in schools or higher institutions can help build teamwork, foster decisions, critical and strategic skills useful in schools, work and life.
