I saw many other items related to Sweden Traditions like Swedish Folk Costumes – Swedes wear these costumes on special occasions, during Midsummer, and at Christmas celebrations. The costumes can also be worn as a wedding gown.
My favorite accessory was the hats with the big feathers on them. I felt that it gave the audience a better feel of the time period. I also loved the tight dresses that the woman wore with the puffy bottoms. The woman also wore the big earrings, had the long tight curled hair, vibrant makeup, and elegant dresses. The men had the long curly hair and the facial hair. The men wore capes and had swords that they carried everywhere. Along with the pointy toed shoes.
The Viking community like some other groups depending on their religion practiced queer burial traditions. As Andre Dobat explains in the “Viking Stranger things”, “Traditionally, the ship symbolism in burial contexts is connected with…afterlife…expressing the idea of the dead travelling to the death realm.”(177) In other words, Vikings traditionally used ships not only for voyages but funerals as well. This shows that a barbarian’s ship not only allows men to go on expeditions but, in death, to pass from one world to the afterlife. Andre Dobat’s position clearly states how a Viking’s ship correlates the practice with a strange burial costume.

“Near him in the grave they had placed strong drinks, and fruits. They now clothed him in drawers, leggings, boots, and a kurtak and chaftan of cloth of gold, with gold buttons, placing on the head a cap made of cloth of gold, trimmed with sable.” The Viking was dressed very well, to honor and respect him. That is something that society today can relate too, since we dress our dead in suits and other things to respect their passing. After the dressing they finally carried him and placed him in the ship. “Pillows, and, bringing of strong fruits, and basil, placed them all beside him. Then they brought a dog, which they in two, and threw into the ship…” They also laid all his weapons beside him, and two horses and two ox’s as well were cut up and put on the ship to burn with the Viking and the girl. The funeral of the Viking is very sacrificial, they sacrifice not only humans, but countless animals as well. This is found in many cultures and is usually a sacrifice to the God(s) for countless
It was once reported that there was up to 25,000 Vikings living in Iceland in the mid 900’s. The Norse did not have books, but they did have an alphabet, so they passed on history by stories and poems. Their alphabet was made up runes, are the letters in a set of related alphabets. There are still remains of the runes in some parts of Europe like Iceland and Normandy. It was customary for men to wear long
Clogs with wooden soles were also used (Wolf, 2004, p. 120). Fur from animals of northern climates had more luxurious pelts and were important to vikings, especially in trade. Some Chieftains collected tribute in animal skins based on the rank of the person. Higher ranked individuals paid more tribute (Winroth, 2014, p. 112). Men’s Clothing Men typically wore trousers with a long tunic, some sort of hat, a wool cloak, and leather shoes (Dougherty, 2013).

When you think of the Vikings, chances are you think of horned helmets, raids, and bloody battles. But on the other side of the spectrum, there are the women of Nordic culture. Women are mostly thought of as looking like Viking warriors fighting alongside their men. But that was hardly the case. In reality, women were important in many other ways. They were treated very differently than other women in different European cultures at that time.
The passage on pages 50-51 in the short story, “Rappaccini’s Daughter,” illustrates Giovanni’s growing love for Beatrice and how it changes his perception of her. Giovanni is in his room in Padua, Italy, where he wakes up with thoughts of Beatrice after meeting her the day before. The quote, “invested with all the witchery that had been gathering around it ever since his first glimpse of her, and now likewise imbued with a tender warmth of girlish womanhood,” (Hawthorne 50) portrays Giovanni’s first impression of Beatrice. Made aware of the events prior, in which Beatrice killed a lizard and a fly with her breath, Giovanni believes Beatrice might be capable of what he thought was impossible. Giovanni’s thoughts about Beatrice change when her
Without a doubt voting rights have grown since their first implications in the beginning of this democracy. In the beginning the only person who were able to vote and be part of the government were white protestant male. However, that would of course change after the Voting Rights Act that was signed into order by President Lyndon Johnson that would remove discriminating factors used on African Americans due to the fact that it was unconstitutional under the firth-teen amendment. Some of the discriminating factors that were used were laws passed on by the jim crow laws that included literacy test, or trick questions that had to be answered as well as poll taxes all which kept the lower class and minorities from having a vote in what they believe in. However, minorities were not the only ones left outside of the voting precincts women would also not have the right to vote until the women's suffrage movement that would lead into the 19 Amendment which gave everybody a right to vote regardless of gender. Although, this was a merely 90 years ago in the 1920’s which is a considerable small amount of time considering our form of government isn't that old. Even with all these ratifications of forming new laws to make everything equal regardless of race and gender there are still a problem with voting in today's age although the problems rely more on the technology being used, the access into the polls, as well as a variety of choice in nominees
Viking history and culture have been depicted in many movies, television series, and stories. Vikings are commonly known as barbarians that raid villages and intimidate others with huge ships with dragon heads, and horned helmets. This information is based on facts, but has been distorted and exaggerated over many years and tales. Viking history spans from the years 780 until 1100, which is the time span of the Viking raids. Not every Scandinavian was a Viking; Vikings were known as the men that conducted raids and bloody battles. The old definition of Viking was synonymous with the term pirate. The modern definition is relevant to the Scandinavian medieval culture, to include farming, crafting and trading.
The Vikings were a group of Scandinavian raiders that were around from about the 8th century to the 11th. They mainly attacked the British Islands , the Frankish empire, England, but they also plundered places such as the Iberian peninsula and northern Africa. Vikings did not always settle into the places that they found, for instance after exploring North America they left the place never to return again. Even so, after landing on Greenland they colonized themselves there, and ancestors of the Vikings still live there today. So now that you know a little about the history of the Vikings lets go into detail about the specifics of the Viking age. (Peter Sawyer, Oxford Ill. History of the Vikings p. 1-19)
The word Viking in the Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language says that the word Viking means the following. “Vi•king 1. any of the Scandinavian pirates who plunder the coasts of Europe from the 8th to 10th centuries. 2. a sea-roving bandit: pirate. 3. a Scandinavian. 4. U.S. Aerospace. One of a series of space probes that obtained scientific information about Mars.” (1)
Although there are many differences in fashion from era to era the similarities are outstanding. Some of the most repetitive pieces from era to era include corsets, robes, and codpieces. Codpieces were a very fashionable cover for the zipper of men’s pants that the weather men wore to make themselves more presentable. Codpieces are still very popular
