Van Gogh is a part of the Early Modernism period, more specifically, he was a part of Post Impressionism. When we look back at the progression of art periods we see that modernism is the start of when classicism begins to diminish. Modernism is the start of moving towards emphasizing movement and different perspectives for color, patterns, forms, lines, specifically in Post Impressionism. It turned away from the Enlightenment views of reason and rationalism, which aspects included modesty, harmony, balance and a sense of proportion. Modernism steps away from the classical period of harmony, balance, and subtle earth tones, rather it puts an emphasis on movement and makes the audience think about what is actually being displayed because of the different brush strokes and intense colors used during this time. Van Gogh, a postimpressionist, was also an expressionist. Through his paintings he specifically chose colors to express himself more forcefully (Fiero 345). Vincent van Gogh is one of the world’s most well-known artists. He was the son of a pastor and was brought up in a religious atmosphere. This is when he starting becoming very interested in the people and things that surrounded him. He became an artist at the age of 27.
In my research / readings of my chosen Artist, I found a lot of information about them that I will descibe individually. Based on the biography, It has been stated that Vincent “was a most well known post-impressionism Artist, for whom color was the chief symbol of expression, he was highly emotional, lacked self-confidence and struggled with his identity and with direction.” (Templeton Reid) In the late 1800’s is when Vincent basically made the decision to become an Artist, in which he wanted to provide some type of Happiness because he was able to create beauty (Templeton Reid). As you review the art chosen above by Vincent Van Gogh, you will notice the colors used were dark i.e. Greens, Oranges, Blues, with splashes of yellow to create the sun, which led me to believe that maybe this was when he was in the dark place of his life. In the Van Gogh painting, I see big trees with the nice bright sun shining over the blue water, while looking at the trees it makes me feel safe because of the openness of the surrounding space, also the brightness of the sun and the coolness of the water makes me calm and relaxed, it’s just something about being in nature that gives me a sense of peace and direction, nothing to distract or disturb me.

“Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin drew their inspiration from emotions. Van Gogh declared that "instead of trying to reproduce what I have before my eyes I use color more arbitrarily in order to express myself forcibly," whereas Gauguin advised a fellow painter: "Go on working, freely and furiously, you will make progress.... A strong emotion can be translated immediately” (Maurice Malingue qtd. in Galenson and Weinberg_2).
Imagine a life where reality is distorted and the only true companion to walk through life with are paints, brushes, and a blank canvas beckoning the artist to reveal his truth. This is the life and reality of famed artist Vincent van Gogh. The artist led a tragic and depressing existence from a young child, which continued throughout his adult years until his early departure at the young age of 37. Van Gogh left behind a legacy of beautiful and interpretive paintings, which express appealing landscapes, delicate flowers, and humanity in their surroundings. It begs the question, how could a gifted artist depict and interpret society so well in his paintings but have an inability to make personal connections
“In 1886, he went to Paris to join his brother Theo, the manager of Gopil’s gallery in Paris, van Gough studied with Cormon inevitably met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin. “He was so taken with these new impressionist painters, he tried to copy what they did but was unsuccessful. He saw, in Paris, new ideas never thought of before and started lightening his dark shades and thus, developed a bolder, unconventional, and truly unique style. Though he had changed his style, Van Gogh was still not selling any work which drew him even more into depression as
From a behavioral point of view it seems that Van Gogh’s ability to express his internal state of mind may be reflected in his paintings, when he started to fall into depression his paintings showed deep dark colors with barely clue of light optimism showing his hopelessness. Incredibly a reversal always occurs taking him towards feelings of grandiosity and creativity as the mania takes hold. On this stage his paintings were rather brilliant full of colors and the canvas would look more lifeful therefore showing his maniac
Arguably no other artist has captured people's imaginations like Vincent van Gogh. “Vincent van Gogh’s passion, contemplation of life, nature, art, his intensity, his mental illnesses, and his suicide at thirty-seven have all contributed to the powerful myths and love for the estranged artist” (Callow). It is hard to believe that such a beloved painter of today’s society lived such, a short and tortured life. At a young age things, did not start out too well for Vincent. He did not have a very good childhood, and went through many failures in life before he finally found he had an enjoyment for painting. He did not find out that he had a love for painting until he was about twenty-seven years old. Even when he discovered that his calling
As odd as it sounds, Vincent was born exactly one year after his mother’s stillborn, also named Vincent. One thing that saddened van Gogh was seeing his deceased brother’s headstone with his name and birthdate already engraved into it.

Vincent Van Gogh was formed by his social, cultural and historical context. This is expressed clearly in the underlying stories of both paintings, Starry Night, 1889 and Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, 1889. Both of these paintings portray a narrative relating to Van Gogh significantly as he emotionally connects to the subject in each painting. Van Gogh’s aim of these subjective works was to express meaning through colour and express the painting to a more personal emotion for the viewer. Van Gogh belonged to a small style of Post Impressionism which was a reaction against Impressionism and their formality.
