The Voting Age Should be Lowered to 16 Lowering the voting age in the United States is a constant, ever growing, immensely debatable issue which will continue to divide the US for years to come. Until change is present, American elections won’t have the complete opinion of the population. The main counterargument to this idea is that teens aren’t properly informed about this particular topic, however, there are many intelligent teens who are very capable of making educated decisions. Many teenagers hear their parents and families talk about politics and their personal views, creating a greater incentive for these teens to vote. Increasing the voting turnout is the primary reason that I believe the voting age should be lowered. On average, around 57% of the eligible voting population voted in the previous three presidential elections, a major factor in determining the results (Hubby, 2016). Not only can decreasing the voting age increase the turnout of teens, but also for future adult voters. The majority of 18 year olds will miss out on their first voting opportunity because they go off to college, where they are not eligible to vote.
