I can definitely say I didn’t expect that. The bird screeched and dove at me again, this time, I jumped to the side and rolled. I grunted as my left shoulder hit the wall next to the alley door. As I lay on the ground, I looked down and found a weapons belt wrapped around my hips. I yanked one of the throwing knives out, flipped it and palmed the handle. Using the wall, I slid up, watching the sky for the bird. This time, I didn’t take my eyes off it. It was just as massive as I first thought, as it circled, its wings blocked the sky. It tucked its wings and dove right at me like a large rocket. Just as I was about to throw the knife, a small voice said, “Wait”. I paused for a second, letting it plummet and just as it reached its feet out …show more content…

“Mugged,” I said and swallowed hard, “or, at least, I guess that’s what they were trying. When they realized I didn’t have money they shoved me into the wall and ran." Rhonda touched my forehead lightly with a finger and I flinched. “Ow!” My voice sounded rough. “Sorry.” She took me by the shoulders and steered me towards the restroom. “Let’s get you cleaned up, okay?" Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Alex, an unreadable expression on his face. He turned to follow until Rhonda held up a hand and said, “Later.” She gave him a look and continued to wrestle me out of the room. Once in the restroom, Rhonda told me to stay. She walked out and a few moments later, she walked in with a dry towel. Wetting it she said, “So, are you going to tell me what happened?” Slowly, I started telling her what happened and pulled off my coat which wasn’t easy because I hurt all over. When she turned over my left arm she gasped. There was small gash that was ragged like a rusty box cutter attacked me. The bruising around it made it look larger than it was. “I just need it wrapped. It will heal. Things like this are going to happen, you know?" I tried to sound …show more content…

“Follow us and I’ll tell you." I looked back at Alex rolling my eyes. She sat me down in one of the chairs and disappeared into the kitchen. Alex slid down into the chair next to mine, his stare intense enough that I started to squirm. Rhonda reappeared with a bandage and some topical ointment. “Ahhhhhh!” I yelled as she squeezed some out onto my arm. She raised her eyebrows. “Would you hold still so I can wrap it." As she began to wrap my arm, she looked at Alex and told him the story. When she finished the cut was hidden behind a tight and neatly wrapped bandage. Then she got up. “I’m going to go over there and finish helping them so we can leave.” She pointed across the room, then she looked at me, “He looks like he needs to talk to you." She spun on her heels and left us alone. “It looks much bigger than it really is,” I said before he could speak. “On the whole, yes, it looks bad, but honestly, it’s just a bunch of small scratches. Most of the bruises are just ones that I got from rolling around in the alley and…” Alex held his hand up and sighed softly. “I can’t do this again. I can’t watch,” he paused, and I felt my pulse jump, “someone that I love, get hurt. I just can't do it again. I'm done." Alex stood up, leaving me sitting there watching him walk away. I felt like I’d been raked out with a
