Also this papers tackles how these information systems brought Walmart to where it is today and that is at the top of Fortune 500s list for 2 years in a row. Another topic covered would whether these systems are suitable in the long-run. Putting importance in information, this paper also discusses the measures being implemented by organizations to safeguard their information from unauthorized personnel. And at the end, this paper will evaluate the possibility of cloud computing for Wal-mart, its advantages and disadvantages, and the future of computing in the clouds.
INTRODUCTION
Information system (Laudon & Laudon 2010) is a collection of software, hardware, and data organizations use in monitoring, controlling, transacting, forecasting, problem solving in various levels of management. These systems converts data into information to facilitate the organization in hastening their process in various fields. These systems aid operational level, middle level, and executive level managers in their day to day tasks.
Walmart is one organization that maximized its data and converted it to useful information by the use of their cutting edge information systems. They managed to minimize cost and maximize profits with the use of these systems. Now Walmart is at the top of Fortune 500s list and holding that position by adapting and advancing in technology making management tasks and structure simplified but
Walmart is the preeminent organization that was established by Sam Walton in 1962 and now Walmart’s leads globally including Canada. Walmart was first started as small discount store with the slogan of “more for less”, and now it has grown worldwide in last five decades into the one of the biggest retailer across the globe. And today Walmart controls over 11,000 retail unit under 65 banners in 28 countries with workforce of 2.2 million associates across the globe whereas 1.4million in the U.S alone. Walmart also hires full time and part time employees with the minimum qualification. Company targets the domestic customer looking for more with less spending power. Walmart has deals going throughout the year with amazing offers which fulfills customers need.
Walmart is known throughout the entire world as one of the most popular chain department stores. Actually, most have probably visited a Walmart store in the past week. Though Walmart stores seem to be a normal part of life the average person more than likely has little knowledge that pertains to Walmart’s success and business culture. This paper will guide one through the history of the organization, why Walmart is successful, what could threaten or open new opportunities, and how might they hold a competitive advantage.
Information system is a combination of hardware, software, infrastructure as well trained personnel who organized and facilitate planning, control, coordination and decision making within an organization. Information systems are also able to implement a vital integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data. With this, it provided organizations with the necessary information, knowledge, and digital products needed. Information system bring the meaning of business applications that manage their operations, compete in the market place, manage accounts and human resources. This system have a vast variety of components that are crucial for a enterprise, business to function at his highest level, IT software is responsible that all system are reliable and up to date.
Walmart is the world’s biggest private employer with more than 2.2 million employees working in more than 8500 stores in 15 countries under 55 different names. It is world’s third largest public corporation and one of the world’s most valuable companies. Walmart has a tremendous product line which includes general merchandise, apparel, toys, domestics, grocery, fabrics & notions, stationery & books, cellular phones & service plan contracts, shoes, housewares, hardware, electronics, home furnishings, small appliances, automotive accessories, horticulture & accessories, sporting goods, pet food & pet accessories, and financial services & products.
Wal-Mart is the number one retailer in the United States and is at the top of the Fortune 500 listing. Wal-Mart operates in many countries world-wide and is moving into new countries every year. Wal-Mart is also expanding as a retailer. They have expanded into many other sectors of the marketplace, including groceries, gas stations, electronics, and auto maintenance. Each year, Wal-Mart finds new ways to grow and offer more services to their customers.
Established in 1962 by Sam Walton, Wal-Mart has since been known as the top corporation in the world. According to the Global Fortune 500 list, Walmart is ranked number one--meaning they are the leading public corporation according to their gross revenue. Wal-Mart embodies the notion of the “American Dream”. Sam Walton was always on the search for lower prices, and “equal opportunities” for his employees. Not only was Wal-Mart characterized as being charismatic and frugal, but they were already ahead of their competitors technologically. Walmart, is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of discount department stores and warehouse stores. Every company successes for a reason. In my opinion, Walmart’s resources and capabilities as follows:
Wal-Mart uses a tremendous amount of information resources to build their marketing decision support systems and customer relationship management environment. Wal-Mar’s main objective is to provide their customers with the best value they can find anywhere while providing friendly and efficient customer service. Its strategies are based on reducing costs to quality products so they are able to achieve “everyday low prices” (Walmart.com, 2013). Wal-Mart has to be able to monitor and analyze all the processes and information possible in order for them to attain a competitive price advantage, lure in new customers, and retain faithful and loyal current customers. “Walmart” is a publicly listed company incorporated in the United States of America with branches/stores worldwide in around 27 countries. Walmart started in 1962 by Sam Walton and became incorporated in 1969 the company currently has over 11,000 stores worldwide under a number of different brands and is the world’s largest company based on its turnover / revenue. Walmart is the largest supply chain in the world which distributes different products of multiple firms. For the last fifteen years, Walmart has grown significantly in terms of revenues, sales volume, profits, and gradually gaining its market share. In addition, the firm has successfully to make a significant transition from a regional retailer to become a world largest brand. The main reasons contribute to Walmart?s success due to smart management, adapt new latest technological advance, strategic partnership collaboration, innovate operation system such as hardware and software application.
Wal-Mart is number one in the Retail Giant Corporation across United States of America, and is the leading retail store in fifteen other countries. Wal-Mart continues to seek new and innovated ways to reach its customers on a daily basis. The store believes its success has been base upon its customers and being able to reach them with the new technologies of this Modern Age.
They adopted Point Of Sales (POS) machine in 1983. In1985. They built Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), all the information is dealt on the computer instead of using paper. In1986, using Quick Response (QR) to built good partner relationship with suppliers, high frequency distribution with small amount each time, in order to lower risk, stocks and stimulate demand and sales. In 2006, Wal-Mart started using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), a wireless system used to identify tags and get data in any environment without any workforce. Because this, Wal-Mart can save 8350 billion per year. (MBSlib) Obviously, the primary activities in value chain of Wal-Mart are the strongpoint that can add value to the firms, especially logistics.
Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world. Wal-Mart’s products and services come with the highest standards, yet the lowest prices. Through innovative thinking and leadership through service, Wal-Mart has shaped itself to what is today and promises to be tomorrow. Wal-Mart promises to provide a better life for their customers, associates, suppliers, and families through lower prices than their competitors. Additionally, Wal-Mart has 23 million associates with 260 million customers every week that have the choice to shop at their stores, online, and through mobile devices. (Walmart Corporate)
