Corporate Social Responsibility Model (CSR) & Ethical Issues
To give a better view of ethical issues and social responsibilities, we would like to use the CSR model to reflect the Ethical issues and the social responsibilities of New Belgium Brewery Company
1. Ethical Issues
The main ethical issues in this case is the fact that to what extent a company like NBB can compromise their profits to maintain a high quality production and protect the
Consumer demand for robust ale was not being fulfilled with the current beers on the market. In 1991 Jeff Lebesch and his wife Kim started the company out of their basement. They focused on the rich flavor and unique concept. Their focus on social and environmental responsibility has set them apart from brewing companies on the market. Jeff and his wife wanted to promote a product while being innovative and socially responsible. They designed their core values and mission statement while hiking in a national park (Ferrell, 2010). In addition they wanted to promote the brand and corporate citizenship (Ferrell, 2010). Although the product is alcohol they encourage consumers to be responsible. Also, they have sponsored events, dinners and philanthropic causes to help gain consumer loyalty. In 2013, USA named NBB as 6 out of 15 best brewing companies (Franklin, 2013). Also, the company has increased is competitive advantage with is stance on environmental conscience brewing. They were the first brewery to utilize wind power generator, even with an increase cost of .025 per kilowatt (Asher, Bidner and Greene, 2003). Also, they utilize light tunnels, windows and recycled steam to reduce their carbon footprint (Gorski, 2013). In 2002 NBB participated in the LEED-EB pilot program (Ferrell, 2010). Furthermore, the company donates $1 for every barrel of beer sold to each of the 26 states territories and distributed $700,000 in 2012 (What we are about, 2013). Despite
For the rest of the meal I’ll still need tomato sauce, I need spinach leaves, onions, garlic cloves, pecans, and basil leaves. Fortunately the basil and pecan nuts are easier to acquire because I happen to have garden at my house which does produce both of these ingredients. As for the other ingredients, the rest is purchased at the store, the only distinction is a great deal of this is not packaged previously, instead it’s fresh produce so the manufacturing process is not the same. For several years, Kroger has operated with agriculturalists and contractors to transport locally produced merchandises to grocery stores. There are two main farms specifically in Arizona where Kroger does obtain some of their fresh vegetables. These include Rousseau
It is said that “The only social responsibility that there is, is to obey laws and pay taxes,” but according to Milton Friedman, “social responsibility is to increase profits.” This kind of responsibility also a form of giving back. Many people believe that the future of Wal-Mart is sustainability. Wal-Mart Stakeholders are the associates, otherwise known as employees, the suppliers, and the investors of this company. I believe that Wal-Mart is doing enough to become more sustainable both locally and globally by the resources, its key stakeholders.
The establishment of big business within the United States also alters the social impact through the developments which take place. There are a variety of positive and negative variables which directly alter the social and cultural associations with products and services. Wal - Mart, one of the largest multinational corporations, often known as a big box retailer, offers a variety of products in it's store and is noted as one of the largest corporations in America. While the influence of the store continues to create demands, there are both positive and negative associations with the influences of the corporation and it's development.
As Sears Holdings has continued to grow so rapidly there has been some down falls within the company, this is not to say that due to the downfalls they cannot have a stronger rising. As the down size to help increase their profits once again, it is seen to be helpful that they have such a great business ethics as their backbone. Being able to rely on the knowledge of creating such a huge corporation should help Sears Holdings to regrow even stronger after a downsize. The course of actions Sears Holdings interprets from the triple bottom line is what is making it possible to regrow not only financially but also sustainably.
Companies today are heavily influenced by the demands of customers and stakeholders. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to the social and environmental responsibility policies and practices developed by an organization to increase its positive influence and reduce its negative activity towards society (Parks, 2008). The business approach and corporate philosophy of an organization is easily altered due to economic pressures, technological improvement and stakeholder needs and demands. "Going green" or being eco-friendly is one such demand. Environmental and sustainability concerns originate most often from governments, consumer activists, and the general public (Schlosser, 2008). Thus, organizations must implement sustainability into daily practices. In addition, sustainability alters the nature of competition and drives companies to think differently about products, processes, and technologies (Parks, 2008).
Whole Foods would be located at the top of the pyramid using Carroll’s Global Corporate Social Responsibility Pyramid (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013 P21). Whole Foods goes above and beyond the requirements of society and stakeholders by investing in coaching and teaching their workforce to maintain a positive influential spirit that is contagious. Tenured employees have a more sharing and caring attitude resulting in having many subject matter experts due to their years of experience with the company. Therefore, any new employee is trained by an SME (subject matter expert) producing knowledgeable and well-rounded employees that are superior to those of other grocery stores.
NBB try to reduce negative impact on environment by using cost-efficient energy-saving alternatives. NBB invests in a wind turbine, making it the first fully wind powered brewery in the United States. NBB has also used a steam condenser that captures and reuses hot water used for boiling barley and hops in the production process to start the next brew. The steam is redirected to heat the floor tiles and de-ice the loading docks in cold weather. NBB also purchased an energy efficient brew kettle that
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a term used to describe a company’s efforts to improve society in a certain way. These efforts range from donating money to an organization such as a nonprofit organization, to implementing environmentally friendly policies in the workplace. This idea is not required for companies; instead it is something that companies do to improve their communities. The way companies practice CSR is different from company to company, and some companies may not even practice it at all.
After reviewing the three videos that were recommended for me to watch about Walmart, I later had a different perspective of Walmart as a company. With Walmart opening in many countries and towns it has lessened the amount of the small businesses in the area by competition. 5,000 Walmart are opened and still counting. This is an ethical problem to a certain extent. Small business owners know that they are small and that there will be some type of competition, but they probably never imagined that the competition would be a multimillion dollar company. That is not ethically Walmart’s fault. Where Walmart has a problem with is the amount of money and benefits that they give their employees. Walmart doesn’t compensate their employees the amount
Today in the news there are allegations against corporate giant Wal-Mart’s Mexican division of bribing Mexican officials to secure building permits in the country, as supported by the New York Times. The question was raised do these types of allegations affect shopper’s views of organizations? It turns out that shoppers do care about integrity and moral attitudes of organizations they do business with. We live in a world of modern technology with 24/7 instant communication access, that being said that being organizations must realize that how they behave is more important than ever.
Walmart is looking to go for sustainability in their everyday activities. They are striving to operate by utilizing renewable energy, to bring down the level of wastes in their global operations and sell sustainable products. They are also taking steps to counter climatic changes. They are also ensuring that the safety and wellbeing of their workers are considered in their supply chain. They are looking to improve recycling through education and infrastructure improvement.
As the CEO of Wal-Mart, I will ensure that act ethically and the individuals I employ does not engage in unethical practices to gain a profit. Honesty and fair practices would be my fundamental objectives in that I would guarantee that the organization takes part in. A basic point in overseeing stakeholders relationships is that proprietors who put resources into the business, my morals and business practices are an essential concern. Clients expect that I treat them fairly, genuinely and with straightforwardness in promoting and interchanges. I will Keep clients fulfilled, this is a central point in long term development and maintainability. Communities expect that I work with integrity, demonstrate compassion for the community and individuals,
A sustainable organization is prepared to thrive today and in the future and thrive on all levels- from how it affects the environment, to how it affects the health, and well-being of its employees and how it serves its customers and the community.” We see the competition with Walmart verse Target and we see that there should not be much competition. However, we find many different sources that point to one rather than the other. We also see how the two find ways to team up with certain products and create a sustainable environment.
Anheuser Bush breweries are one of the most beloved iconic brands in the United States. The company was founded in 1852 and has a deep heritage in American culture (Anheuser Busch, 2012). Furthermore the company has built a market share comprised of nearly half of the entire U.S. market (48.9%). The company's success has also put it in a position in which it can be incredibly generous to various communities and causes. In Saint Louis, Missouri, where the company headquarters are located, Anheuser Busch has a long history of charitable activities within the local community.
