Walmart is the preeminent organization that was established by Sam Walton in 1962 and now Walmart’s leads globally including Canada. Walmart was first started as small discount store with the slogan of “more for less”, and now it has grown worldwide in last five decades into the one of the biggest retailer across the globe. And today Walmart controls over 11,000 retail unit under 65 banners in 28 countries with workforce of 2.2 million associates across the globe whereas 1.4million in the U.S alone. Walmart also hires full time and part time employees with the minimum qualification. Company targets the domestic customer looking for more with less spending power. Walmart has deals going throughout the year with amazing offers which fulfills customers need.

Wal-Mart is an American multinational retail corporation and one of the leading discount department retail stores (Wikipedia). It is the highest- grossing company in the United States (Fortune 2008a), and is by far one of the most successful companies worldwide. In the reading “Up Against Wal-Mart” by Karen Olson, she explains the tactics used by Wal-Mart in order to avoid paying their employees the fair wages they deserve. By training their employees to be anti-union, they can keep their pay lower while getting more labor out of them. In doing this employees are less likely to ask or receive promotions because they do not expect it to happen. Many of those who have worked at a Wal-Mart speak out on the mistreatment because they want a fair wage for the work they are putting in. The main focus for the way Wal-Mart runs their business is to teach their employees about working in a place union free. Those who disagree do not gain much change because they are quickly put down.

Having strong presence in the retail industry, the firm expanded business to offer second hand car. The firm leverage on its competencies to provide its own product to consumer. Also, Wal-Mart works heavily with its suppliers. This symbiotic relationship can be seen as vertical integration due to the level at which Wal-Mart analyses its suppliers and improves their manufacturing processes. Wal-Mart definitely has the business strategy of Low Cost Leadership. They do nothing to really differentiate themselves from competitors and provide no-frills self-service stores that always provide the lowest prices. Wal-Mart has built enough clout with suppliers that they can dictate the prices and go in and change suppliers manufacturing processes in order to wring out more and more savings for the consumer.

As we approach the holiday season an alarming new trend among top companies has surfaced. In the past few weeks articles about how Wal-Mart and McDonalds have had controversial experiences between company and employees have come out. Both companies simply do not understand what it is like for their employees to make below the “living wage”, and the answer should not be to rely solely on government programs such as food stamps. Before we actually look into what both of these companies did, let’s keep in mind that according to the US Census Bureau as of 2012, 46.5 million Americans are living in poverty (US Census Bureau, 2012). As a country, we need to discuss poverty seriously, because it isn’t a small problem, as time goes on it’s becoming an epidemic.

Walmart has kept its prices so low by cutting-edge technology, corporate culture and put in their efforts to make the suppliers to lower the prices and sell goods as low as possible. The basic goal of Walmart is to keep their prices low and it has always been successful at this.

Evidently, Wal-Mart is not doing anything to differentiate itself from rivals. It gives no frills to self-service outlets always providing the cheapest prices. Through a well-built influence with suppliers, the company has gained the power to manipulate prices and amend manufacturing procedures thus wringing out more savings for its customers.
