Vietnam had been a French colony since the 1880s and they fought for their independence and won in 1954. The country was then split into communist North Vietnam and non-communist South Vietnam. (Education Place )The war in Vietnam occurred during the Cold war and is often considered to be an indirect way of conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, with each nation and its allies supporting each side. (Hickman, 2015) This war lasted ten years, when the United States were defeated and were forced to withdraw (J. Bottaro, In Search Of History, 2013)
The causes of the Vietnam War were created from the side effects of the Cold war. The Vietnam War centres around a belief held by America that communism were trying to expand all over south East Asia. (Trueman, 2015)
Before WWII Vietnam had been part of the French empire, however during WWII the country was occupied by the Japanese. (Hickman, The Vietnam War: Origins, 2013) Ho Chi Minh’s Viet Minh (which is a resistance group), were inspired by Chinese and Soviet communism (Spector, 2016) and this led them to resist the Japanese oppressors and increase their power throughout Vietnam. The increased power of the resistance movement led to the surrendering of the Japanese. (Editors, 2005. ) The Viet Minh took the opportunity to establish their own government led by Ho Chi Minh.

(Trueman, 2015) This led to the French shelling the city of Haiphong to gain entrance into the capital city of North Vietnam. This action lead to the start of the First Indochina War (Hickman, The Vietnam War: Origins, 2013). It looked as if the French were going to win but the Viet MinH had been educating and training people underground. Many countries felt sympathetic towards the Vietnamese including the US, however in 1949 when a communist government game into power over China their attitude changed. (J. Bottaro, 2013, p.
Before the Vietnam war, Vietnam was in a revolution because they did not want to be ruled by France. Vietnam wanted to be independent right after World War II ended in 1945. Japan had control of them, when Japan surrendered to the Allies the French never left Vietnam and claimed it as a territory(Mintz).
The Vietnam war did not officially start until the 1950's. This is when the U.S. started sending in troops. Before then the French had been trying to conquer what was then called Indochina. They began their conquest in 1859, by 1888 they had turned the area that is now called Vietnam and Cambodia into the Colony of French Indochina. This was challenged many times by different uprisings but none worked as well as the Viet Minh common front( this was controlled by the Vietnamese communist party). During WWII the French were defeated by the Germans. This severely weakened their authority in Vietnam. In 1940 the Japanese invaded and
Even years before the war, Vietnam was a hotly disputed territory. Many countries had taken Vietnam over, and after World War II, Vietnam was in the hands of France. Obviously, the Vietnamese wanted their own country, and their long history of being a colony prompted the oppressed people to fight for
Fighting in Vietnam started well before the actual “Vietnam War”. The Vietnamese people had been under French rule for several decades until Japan invaded in 1940. In 1941, when Ho Chi Minh came back from his travels there were two foreign powers occupying the Vietnam territory, the French and Japanese. Ho Chi Minh established the Viet Minh in hopes to rid Vietnam of these two powers. On September 2, 1945 the Viet Minh established the Democratic Republic of China after getting support in northern Vietnam. This action spawned the French to fight back to keep control of their colony. Ho Chi Minh wanted support from the United States against the French; he went as far as to supply the United States with information about the Japanese during WWII. The United States kept with their Cold War foreign policy of containment as to prevent the spread of Communism, fearing the “Domino Theory” that said “if one country in Asia fell to Communism then surrounding countries would soon fall”.
The Vietnam conflict began long before the U.S. became directly involved. Indochina, which includes Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, was under French colonial rule. The Vietnam communist-nationalist, also known as the Vietminh, fought for their freedom from the French. The French were being slaughtered, and were doing little to keep the communist North Vietnamese out of South Vietnam. The U.S. sent financial aid to France to help them eliminate the communist threat. At the Geneva Conference in 1954, the major powers tried to come to an agreement on Indochina. There would be a temporary division on the 17th parallel in Vietnam. The Vietminh would control North Vietnam, and South Vietnam would be ruled under the emperor Bao Dai. There was to be an election held in two years to set up the permanent
Vietnam has a very rich history that often goes unnoticed and unaccounted for, this is most likely due to the war being such a big landmark in the history of Vietnam. Before the war many events transpired that would eventually lead up to the war. In the late 19th century Vietnam was considered to be a French colony. The French built their own standing infrastructure, they began to build railways and roads and bridges. All of this building meant heavy taxation on the Vietnamese. This was all good and progressive for vietnam however “Naturally the Vietnamese wanted independence.” (http://www.localhistories.org/viethist.html) From there Ho Chi Minh founded a revolution and within 20 years Vietnam came under Ho Chi Minh rule.
The Vietnam War took place in between 1947- 1975. It consisted of North Vietnam trying to make South Vietnam a communism government. The United States later joined this conflict because of the stress North Vietnam was putting to South Vietnam to become a government that America did not want. The main reason why America joined was because of a theory called the Domino Effect. America and Russia were going through what has been dubbed the Cold War. The Domino Effect is the theory that communism will spread form one country to another. United states does not want this because our
A leader emerged, HoChi Minh, who organized a group to fight back against the Japanese. Members of the group became known as the Viet Minh. HoChi Minh wanted support from America to help Vietnam become independent. France wouldn’t leave their hold in the country. An agreement was made between HoChi Minh and the French. The northern part of Vietnam went to the
Vietnam War’s leading cause was the Indochina War. Many countries tried to seize control of Vietnam, leading to many conflicts. For a long period of time Indochina was overrun by the French, which was a region of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. They continued to have power over the country until the World War 2. Japan invaded but their power was short-lived due to the defeat of the war. Emperor Bao who was a French leader then took control of Indochina. The communist political leader named Ho Chi Minh decided it was time to take action and sent his army known as the Viet Minh to attack a northern city called Hanoi. Winning the battle in 1945 Ho Chi Minh became president, created Hanoi as capital and announced the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
The Vietnam War was a 21-year conflict that originated in 1954 surrounding Vietnam in several wars. This instigated two specific engagements with two countries: France and China. The altercation between France and Vietnam was called the Indo-China which led to the U.S.’s involvement after France left Vietnam. Meanwhile, China commenced its interest in Vietnam after the defeat of the U.S. and South Vietnamese government. It hoped to demonstrate its influence as the top nation in Southeast Asia. This conflict inspired the U.S. fear of a domino effect of communism spreading throughout Southeast Asia when Vietnam fell; furthermore, the U.S. decided to assist the South Vietnamese to avert this event. North Vietnam had the support of Russia because many Russians hoped communism to expand throughout the world and they saw Vietnam as an opportunity to achieve their goal. Thus, many citizens needed to escape into South Vietnam from these communists. From a documentary,
In 1945, at the end of WWII, Vietnam started their war for independence against their colonial rulers, France. Nine years after the start of the First Indochina War, the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu which led to a peace conference in Geneva. At the conference, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam received their independence from France. However, Vietnam was divided between a Communist North and a Democratic South. In 1958, Communist- supported guerrillas in South Vietnam, known as the Viet Cong, began to fight with the North Vietnamese government. Since this occurred in the middle of the Cold War, the United States came to the aid of South Vietnam by sending military advisers into the country. Still, the South Vietnamese government continued to lose land and some controversial events led to the United States deploying more than 500,000 troops in Vietnam. Even with this much military might, South Vietnam could not stand and surrendered to the Communist North in 1975.
Vietnam was a long bloody stalemate that lasted from 1955 to 1975. In 1954 Vietnamese Nationalist gained independence from French colonial rule. Communist formed in the north while a non-communist regime supported by America started in the south. The Vietcong from the north would fight the south’s regime and U.S soldiers for years.
Before all this happened and Vietnam was divided into two; it was one country ruled by the French in 1945. But with the influence of communism from surrounding countries such as China, that form of government became stronger in Vietnam as well. The leader/president of Vietnam, declared it an independent country and when this happened many didn’t agree with him and wanted to still be ruled by the French. So a war between the leader Ho Chi Minh’s followers and the French began in 1946 and lasted for eight years; ending only because the French last a very important battle. (Citation, YEAR)
Conflicts in Vietnam began in 1945 but the official war did not start until the election of Ngo Dinh Diem in 1955. Before World War II, Vietnam was French’s territory. During WWII, Japanese overtook the Vietnam but ended up leaving short after when WWII ended. This gave France the chance to gained control of South Vietnam and the North was under communist rule of China under Ho Chi Minh. Under Ho Chi Minh’s rules people in the north were treated badly because people had no power of their own. Later, Chinese left the North, so Ho Chi Minh took control of the whole North. This gave French the opportunity to fight to regain control of the North so they could have the whole Vietnam. The United States was aiding France with military and other aids
It was a French colony, Indochina (Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) and was occupied by the Japanese during the war.1941was the formation of the Vietnamese national movement, the Viet Minh, by Ho Chi Minh to resist occupants. And Communism, Ho Chi Minh launched a guerrilla war against the Japanese support of the United States. Near the end of the war, the Japanese began to promote Vietnamese nationalism and returned at the end of the day, the country gained nominal independence.
