The War of 1812 was started by America due to British encroachment on three fronts, trade restrictions imposed by the British, the increasing alliances of the British with Indian tribes blocking American expansion West, and due to British interference with merchant class ships in the Atlantic. The war was fought in the Great Lakes region between America and Canada, near New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Atlantic trade routes, and around Washington DC. The British had always considered the American insurrection in the 1770s to be a temporary event, their continued battles within the European continent as well as the rest of the British empire had proven to be too distracting to keep a solid check on North America. The British also had not anticipated a war in North America in the lead up to the war of 1812 due to the fragility of the American states, leading to the hubris Britain retained in its relations with the young United States of America.

The War of 1812 is often referred to as the United States's second war of independence because, like the Revolutionary War, it was fought against Great Britain. The Conflict resulted from the clash between American nationalism and the war Britain and its allies were waging against the empire of Napoleonic France. Many Americans believed that England sought to humiliate the United States, limit its growth, and perhaps even impose a quasi‐colonial status upon its former colonies.

Following multiple years of possible war, the Americans felt that by 1812 it was obligatory to declare war on Britain. This executive decision was supported by numerous causes of which assisted in the buildup of the war. The breakout of this war was not completely unexpected as there had been rising tension between the two nations. America declared war on Britain in 1812 due to the capturing of ships by the British, the effort to conquer Canada, as well as the conjoining of the country.

Eventually it led to a panic in 1819 when rising prices for farm goods caused a surplus of investments for land. Yet banks were starting to tighten credit for the new land boom. They also were foreclosing on land and this caused the panic for those who had moved west and blamed it on the bank.

The War of 1812 was declared by congress on June 18, 1812. The war ended December 24, 1814 with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, but was not ratified until February 17, 1815 in the United States. The vote for declaration of war was close, with a 19 to 13 in Senate and 79 to 49 in the House. In the reading, page 302 states the nineteenth century historians agreed on the causes of war being “first, to “vindicate the national character” and second, to retaliate against British violations of America’s maritime rights.” (Pg 302-303).

A British rule of 1756 stated that if there was no trading in peaceful times, then there would be no trading in times of war. If this were to occur, the ships carrying the goods could and would be seized by the British. (Tindall and Shi, 245). American ships were seized by both England and France, which was an infringement of America’s neutral trading rights. When the ships were seized, the goods were taken and American sailors (especially in the case of the British) were impressed (taken from the ship and forced to join the crews of the ships that seized them).

The War of 1812 is also known as the Second War of Independence because America and Britain had multiple disputes for numerous years since the early 1800’s; America desired revenge. Contributing to the title of Second War of Independence, the First War of Independence between America and Great Britain was twenty-five years before 1812 as well. Some prominent reasons were impressment of American soldiers by Britain, Britain siding with Native Americans, and Britain violating America’s neutral rights. The War of 1812 is probably one of most confusing and unsatisfying wars to learn about in United States history. It could have very well been named Faulty Communication or Lack of Internet.
