In the months leading up to the war of 1812, the new country was divided. Some people wanted the war to happen and others wanted to avoid conflict. The war of 1812 began with conflict between the British and the Americans. The British were taking American sailors and their ships. America’s trade business was being harmed by the British. The new country was split between Democratic-Republican and Federalist. The Democratic-Republicans in the south wanted to go to war but the Federalist in the north did not want to. Ultimately the Democratic-Republicans got their way and America went to war with Britain. Britain taking the American sailors and their ships and the Democratic-Republicans having a more influential say in the government lead America to declare war on Britain in 1812.
American seamen and ships were being taken by the British and many Americans were not happy with this. The U.S House of Representatives in document one said that the United States had the right to use the ocean to transport their own vessels and the products of their own soil and Great Britain defies this right and takes the American vessels, seamen and their cargo. American seamen were being harmed, cargo was being stolen and vessels were taken from their lawful places. This angered many Americans because their rights were being violated. Many people wanted war, particularly the Democratic-Republicans. Democratic-Republicans were mostly in the larger southern and western states that had an economy based on agriculture. Since their economy would not be harmed during the war they were all for it. Also the southern states were the biggest so they had a bigger say and representatives in congress. The war of 1812 was declared because of its many supporters and American rights being infringed
