Depending on the species, these stripes can be yellow and black (Common wasp, German wasp and Hornet) or red and black (Red wasp). Female Common wasps measure between 12 and 17mm in length, smaller than the queen which can measure 20 mm long. As well as a striking appearance, the wasp gives off a loud buzzing noise as it flaps its wings. Larger species such as the German wasp and Hornet produce a lower pitch than smaller varieties such as the Norwegian wasp. The Nesting Habits of a Wasp The Queen wasps will come out of hibernation and look for a nesting location at the start of spring or when the weather permits. Using scrapings of wood and saliva, the queen will begin to construct cells within which to lay her eggs. From these eggs will hatch female worker bees who will take over the nest building duties. Over the course of a summer, a wasp’s nest will grow to contain thousands of wasps.
