Watergate Scandal The Watergate Scandal happened almost 43 years ago; the event will never be forgotten. The Watergate scandal defined, perhaps for the first time, that a president of the United States could be portrayed as untrustworthy. Richard Nixon ran for a second term in 1972, in which he won by a huge margin. The Democratic Party had their headquarters at the high-end Watergate hotel. The break-in happened on June 17th, 1972, in which a security guard noticed the tape on the door lock. Five men were found in the office and were arrested for burglary. It seemed like a mission to spy on the Democratic Party since some of Nixon’s assistants were involved in the case.
November 5th, 1968: Richard Nixon was elected the 37th president. In 1971, in the response to the leak of the “Pentagon papers” which were about the Vietnam War that went into detail that nobody in the public knew. President Nixon authorized a creation of special investigators known as the “White House Plumbers”. The investigators included, Bernard Barker, Virgilio Gonzalez, Eugenio Martinez, Frank Sturgis, and James W. McCord Jr. Nixon told John Ehrlichman who was the White House chief domestic adviser “If we can 't get anyone in this damn government to do something about leaks, then by God we 'll do it ourselves.
