Welcome everyone, to the kingdom of Illea. A beautiful kingdom filled with love, dreams and high hopes. Well, that’s how it seems. In Illea people are split into castes, born or placed. A caste is where you are placed in society. In other words, it’s meant to put you in the “right category” of where you belong in life. I put that in quotation marks because honestly, I believe no one knows what 's best for us. That 's why Kiera Cass made this dystopia based on this system. We ourselves only know. Yes, some people don’t know what 's best for them and there is also a case that people want too much, which results problems like greed. In the book , The Selection, people are based on a number to determine their lifestyle, occupation, and …show more content…
Seven’s are manual laborers and earn below minimum wage. The final and most burdensome caste to be placed in is an eight. Eight’s are often referred to as untouchables and are usually mentally or physically unwell (particularly if there is no one to care for them) , addicts, runaways, homeless and criminals .
You could forget about having food on your plate and having a safe place to call home. No eight would attend school because there is hardly any education provided. Eights tend to also rebel the most and turn against on loved ones. The difficulty is surviving while providing for your loved ones. But all of that depends. It depends on the rights. The freedom to have it all until it’s gone. Life changes and people change. No one can stop that. America’s family is a five and throughout the story this impacts who she is. As just as things are rapidly changing in her, she will never forget her true identity. Which is always good to remember, though change isn’t always bad. “Dad and May would make their art, and patrons would purchase them as gifts. Mom and I would perform at parties-me singing and her playing on her piano-not turning down a single job if we could manage it. (Cass,2012,4) Even though America is doing something she loves to do, the job pays low just like all the other jobs as a five and above. Then the Selection comes along. If you have been Selected you momentarily moved to a higher caste if you aren’t already in one. Split down
America still to this day holds on to the idea of the “American Dream”. This is rather surprising in today’s society and the ups and downs that the nation is facing. The dream in the past was more about freedom and equality. Moving through the decades, this dream has morphed into something quite different. Instead of what America means for all of its inhabitants, the nation has become more individualized. Society has moved to interpret the dream of what America can do for the one. Instead of the unified nation, America has been known for in the past, a shift has started creating an inconsistency in who can realize the dream. The myth of the “American Dream” has been hugely affected by increased materialism, the gap in economic status, and the fantasy of “rags to riches” idea.
The American family is modeled as being happy, calming, and cheerful but for many it is the opposite of that In the novel, Until They Bring the Streetcars Back, by Stanley Gordon, he doesn't romanticize and make the characters life beautiful and perfect. He chooses to give the characters major difficulties in their lives that set them back. Based in St.Paul, Minnesota in the late 40's and early 50's, the difficulties the main teenage characters go through our different then what teenagers go through today. Cal deals with his Fathers disconnection with him. Steve is dealing with always feeling pitied and guilty. But they don't compare to the hardship Gretchen is going through in her household. These characters go through many problems in the book but somehow find a way to relieve their pain.
The short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan is about the main character that has many conflicts with her mother because she struggles with her identity. Her family moved to America after losing everything in China, just as Tan’s mother. The struggle of identity and conflicts with her mother that Tan had when she was young influence this work. This work also talks about Americans as if they were extremely superior to everyone else and that American’s can do whatever they want in America, starting by the first sentences of the story. “My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America. You could open a restaurant. You could work for the government and get a good retirement. You could buy a house with almost no money down. You could become rich. You could become instantly famous” (Tan). This story has a small portion of the Chinese American dream, where the mother shows her daughter Shirley Temple and wants her daughter to be like her and takes her to a
The priest “performs vedic rituals and acts as a counselor,” the warrior noble “has the role of protecting society,” and the merchant “includes landowners, moneylenders, and sometimes artisans (Molloy 91). The males within these three upper caste systems are considered twice born. This is where gender plays a role within the caste system as well. The peasant “does manual labor and is expected to serve the higher castes,” while the untouchable is the lowest caste system and is expected to do the lowest work, such as “cleaning toilets, sweeping streets, collecting animal carcasses, and tanning animal hides” (Molloy 91). Thus, it is evident that these two lower caste systems
People are born into the caste of their parents and are not allowed to cross into another one. They are also expected to marry in the same caste. The unequal distribution of money, influence, pain and suffering are seen as a natural consequence for ones previous actions, both in this life and in previous lives. Hindus can be reborn at a higher level through pure acts, good thoughts and devotion. They can also be reborn at a lower level through bad deeds. It is even possible to be reborn as an animal. Arizona State University (2004) lists the five social castes. They are: Brahmins (priests and academics); Kshatriyas (military); Vaishyas (farmers and merchants); Sudras (peasants and servants); and Harijan (outcasts or untouchables).
Make an analysis of how the caste system might function in the life of a particular Hindu individual.
The Younger Family all have very different ambitions, when it comes to their “ideal” American dream. Though, in reality during the rough times everyone must find a way to make
Humans instinctively separate into groups resembling themselves. “‘In our school there were different groups you would run with, depending on your station in life… The poor kids... We were called Nutters… The most important rule was that there was no mixing. Do you understand what I mean?’... ‘Yes,’ he said. ‘In India they have something called the caste system. Members of different castes cannot marry or even eat together. The lowest caste is called the Untouchables.’” (Kingsolver, 133). Despite living distant childhoods, both Estevan and Taylor understood social division and its rules of disconnecting from other circles.
Caste system: A social system where your occupation and position in society is based on your ancestry.
Her mom expected her to achieve her dream with no exceptions nor struggles. This makes her mother lose hope of her desire for her daughter to live the “American Dream”.
Achieving the American Dream depends on the person’s attitude towards the situation because having or lacking the will, happiness, and determination will prevail and really show how much a person wants to succeed or not. The idea of success as a whole, and different reasons for success can be shown throughout the whole entire book. The introduction to the book tells a story of immigrants that come to the United States and becoming the Rosetans. The book then explains how the birthdays’ of athletes correlate to how successful they are in their sport, and how success depends on how long a person works towards their goal of 10,000 hours. Next, the book talks about characteristics and success of famous geniuses, and later about Joe Flom, who changes his life even without a college degree. Following this, it talks about two southern families fighting about “culture of honor.” Finally, it talks about the theory and culture behind plane crashes, how work in rice paddies increases math skills, and the success of the kids that went to a certain prep school in New York. The book then gives a bonus story about his mother’s life growing up in Jamaica and her
This quote talks about Princess Edlyn and her struggle that she has with her parents. Since Edlyn was born first she is the first in line for the throne. When she becomes queen she will make history as being the first queen of Illea. Before she was born there used to be a caste system where you were born you were given a certain occupation and everyone born after that had to follow in the same footsteps. The people of Illea could only work certain jobs or marry certain people according to whatever rank they were even. Edlyns father was born a 1 since he was royal and the system goes down to 8. Since Edlyn’s father Maxon became king he removed the caste system and all of the people seem to be happy about this choice. 20 years late though, certain
Vedic society was divided into four different classes, Brahmans, nobles, commoners and the serfs. These classes are part of the cosmic hierarchy and were based on purity. This gave way to the caste systems. Castes are arranged in the following order of the polarity of purity; Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas and the shudras. With a fifth group called the untouchables at the very bottom. They are the untouchables because they are the most impure. The caste of an individual cannot be removed. Each caste has strict rules on caste endogamy.
What are the four major castes? What implications does the caste system have for everyday life? How does the caste system relate to Hindu ideas of spiritual life? “The four major castes of Hindu society are; seers ( brahmins ), administrators ( kshatriyas ), artisans or farmers ( vaishyas ), and followers or servants ( shudras)”( Smith 56). Smith writes, religious leaders, teachers, artists, and philosophers are members of the first caste, brahmins, khatriyas, the second caste, first known as warriors are now managers. The tillers of the land, the makers of bricks, and the builders are part of the third caste, vaishyas. The fourth caste is made up of servants, those who will take care of the other castes’ needs (56)”. While I was working in India, summer of 2001 and there at the invitation of the richest family in India and staying at one of their compounds, some of my co-workers and I were playing snooker. A young boy walked into the room where we were playing. He stopped and talked to us for a few minutes before continuing to bed. Accompanied by a man of about twenty years old, the boy’s shudra, who had been the boy’s personal servant for ten or more years. The shudra’s purpose was to protect and serve his charge’s every need. Although there is inequality between castes, Smith denotes.“ within each caste, there is equality, opportunity, and social insurance ( 57)”. Although the text
A few disadvantages of India’s social system are that Religion, caste, and language are major determinants of social organizations. According to the US Department of State-Background Notes website, even though the government has declared the caste system as illegal, it still has a presence in occupational and societal hierarchies (The Office of Electronic Information, Bureau of Public Affairs, 2010).
