Western culture is a body of knowledge derived from reason that began in Ancient Greece. There and in the Roman civilization it developed until the start of the Middle Ages when it largely vanished from Europe. During the Middle Ages, Western culture resided, instead, in the Arab / Persian world to a modest degree. Today, Western culture has at least some presence in nearly all nations of the world. A series of scandals also arose due to the widespread usage of camera phones, with the most widely known incident being one that involves a particular polytechnic student, "Tammy" from Nanyang Polytechnic whose sexual act with her boyfriend was circulated via hand phones and across the internet after she lost her hand phone which contained the self-recorded footage.Majority of the youth have indicated that they would prefer education on the practices of safe sex instead of having teachers and parents tell them to abstain from it totally, which will in turn cause more curiosity and desire to experience the "forbidden" fruit. Other than that, even if sex education is introduced in secondary schools, the result will be mixed, as teachers still tend to be shy about answering and might be caught in a situation where they might feel uncomfortable advocating that it is alright to have safe sex.
This is a worrying trend for a unique group of Malaysian youth and the government is taking proactive measures to address it. It is heartening to note that such lax attitude towards casual sex is also being balanced out by youth of the same age group who are against the engaging of casual sex as a matter of principles and are educated about sexual practices and the risks of such casual behaviour. Sexual education in schools has become a highly controversial topic over the past few years. Some people believe students should be taught abstinence-only education, while others believe students need the full on “sex talk”. While the sex education controversy may seem silly, it is very important that students receive the most efficient education possible. When it comes to education parents want their children to receive the most effective kind. This is also very true in terms of sex education. Sex education is very debatable right now as to whether students should be taught abstinence-only education or comprehensive sex education.
First, I agree that the Western civilization has a clear lineage that focuses on the majority of the following attributes: competition/innovation, science, property rights, personal freedoms, and a free-market economy. The teachers would have to be competent, skillful and content on the subject of sex with the student. School safety and student wellness are paramount in an educational learning environment; consequently, this is the expectancy of all internal and external stakeholders adjoining the school community. Meanwhile, there are numerous reports of female teachers implicated in inappropriate sexual behavior with students published in the news daily. The sexual misconduct by female teachers vacillated from sexual harassment, abuse via emails, sextexting via cell phones, to illicit conversations via the Internet (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and WhatsApp).
How this Western way of thinking came about could be an entire Philosophy course in itself. A short explanation must be described, however, in order to make sense of the rest of this paper. According to William Barrett, what we call Western traditions in thinking really stem from two cultural backgrounds, Hebrew and Greek, both of which are “profoundly dualistic in spirit” (ix). That is, they “divide reality into two parts," setting one division off against the other (Barrett ix). The Hebrews did it on the basis of morality and religion, separating God from Creation, flesh from spirit, right from wrong. The Greeks divide along the basis of philosophical and intellectual lines. It was Plato who almost “single-handedly” established Western philosophy (Barrett ix). Plato “absolutely cleaves reality into the world of the intellect and the world of the senses”
The role of educating students about the importance of healthy sexual relationships has fallen hard and fast on public schools. School aged boys and girls are not receiving information from their parents on what decisions they should make in regards to sex. Parents are finding this topic of conversation too taboo to breach and as a result, students are getting what little information they are receiving from school. Less then half of school aged adolescents talk to their parents about sex and abstinence (Smith, 2005).

It seems when we talk about the west one has to stop and think are we talking about a geography location or are we talking about a culture or could we be talking about a civilization. It is true when we are talking about western culture that we need to know at what time period of time we are talking because it has evolved so much over time.
The Western world originated in Europe with Christianity but quickly spread across the whole western side of the world including many races and religions. The west is said to value widespread employment, free thought, equality, assimilation for human rights, and democracy. The European culture grew with an all inclusive ethos and strived to influence other cultures around the world.
When the subject of sexual intercourse gets brought up, it can be an awkward situation for not only children, but adults as well. However, it is important that adolescents learn about how they were delivered into the world. Sexual activities can be a dangerous thing if the juvenile does not know what is happening or the ways to prevent them from happening. Many adolescents have been seduced into doing sexual actions without even knowing how it happened because they are uneducated. Safe sex courses should be taught to a minimum level of eighth graders instead of an abstinence class to inform students of the dangers and preventions of dangers sexual acts can cause.
In Samuel P. Huntington’s article “The West: Unique, Not Universal,” he addresses his audience with a very controversial question: Is Western Culture universal or unique? Huntington elaborately opens up this question with research and examples to explain and persuade readers that the West will never be a universal culture for all, but rather a unique culture that will be accepted by those who appreciate it. For decades now, historians and scholars have debated with one another to determine who is right and wrong. However, from a handful of articles from different scholars, Samuel Huntington’s statement that the West is unique rather than universal is supported and even further elaborated on by these particular sources. A common understanding between all the sources, that must be noted, is that a civilization’s culture is not comprised of material goods but rather their culmination of their religion(s), values, language(s) and traditions. While although there are scholars out their that negate the West is unique, a large amount of scholars still argue and strengthen Huntington’s argument that the West has unique and exclusive characteristics that make them distinctive and rare.
Teenage sexual activity has sparked an outcry within the nation. With such activity comes a high price. Studies have shown that there has been a significant rise in the number of children with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), emotional and psychological problems, and out-of-wedlock childbearing. Sex has always been discussed publically by the media, television shows, music and occasionally by parents and teachers in educational context. Teens hear them, and as the saying goes, “monkey see, monkey do”, they are tempted to experiment with it. Many schools do not teach abstinence only but teach safe sex, whereas many religious groups and families do not value intercourse before marriage. Teachers may input their own beliefs or morals into the subject matter rather than stick with the facts if they are not properly trained on how to conduct a sex education course. Sex education classes are briefly focused on during a health class or physical education. This is not a long enough period to educate students on such serious material. These arguments does not take into account the fact that students will be taught on subjects such as, sexually transmitted diseases, the reproductive system, sexually and birthing issues rather than the stuff they learn through peers, television or the internet. Many of the myths learned by students about sex swill also are discussed, such as not being able to get pregnant the first time. Classes for those of a younger group are separated by gender, saving embarrassment amongst students and teachers. Teaching sex education can have a major impact on preventing unplanned pregnancy and other sexual problems in adulthood.

Western Civilization has had a tremendous influence on many different cultures worldwide. From the Hispanic cultures in South and Central America, to the Caribbean islands, and also to the various exotic African countries, and even to the distinguished cultures that reside in the continent of Asia. In many ways than one, these cultures have been molded to be as westernized as they could possibly be without losing their traditional customs indefinitely. They’re religion, fashion sense, and family structures have all been altered in some form so that it could resemble the western nation’s patriarch. Countries in North America and Europe have for centuries traveled to different continents in the world and colonized many nations, as a result of that, many of the customs and traditions of those people have been shaped to be a bit more westernized.
Coinciding with the onslaught of the new millennium, schools are beginning to realize that the parents are not doing their job when it comes to sexual education. The school system already has classes on sexual education; these classes are based mainly on human anatomy. Most schools do not teach their students about relationships, morals, respect, self-discipline, self-respect, and most importantly contraceptives. Everyday students engage in sexual activity, many of them with out condoms. This simple act jeopardizes these students' futures and possibly their lives.
