Through Sociology we learned that a minority group is a group whose member share a distinct physical and cultural characteristics. Minority groups are often the targets of prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice is defined as an irrational attitude towards certain people based solely on their membership in a particular group.Discrimination is the behavior, epically unequal treatment of people because they are members of a particular group. The fundamental root of discrimination is prejudice. Prejudice starts with cognition and our thoughts towards another group which often leads to a generalization or stereotyping (Myers, 2014, pg.572). Stereotyping leads us to emotions directed towards a particular group or person; including fear, hatred, and hostility, fundamentally this is negative prejudice (Myers, 2014, pg.572). Myers (2014) states that if we believe our thoughts to be true, our emotions will lead to the actual act of discrimination. Taking action on prejudice is discrimination; it is the behaviours or actions directed towards a specific distinction of a group (Myers, 2014, ph.572). We do know that discrimination can take many forms, some acceptable and others purely inexcusable.
The isolation many minority figures feel is not only caused by the social rules forced upon and expected of these individuals, but also by the fact that the society does not attempt to help or understand these people, and merely tries to ignore them. Prejudice exists as a constant element in society, constantly influencing decisions and altering perspectives of individuals. It serves as a barrier toward equality and ultimately misshapes any sort of balance in a situation. This discrimination towards individuals is especially evident in the work force. Particularly for workers of lower classes or minorities, there is a very overt prejudice toward these individuals because of their differences. It is often believed that because they are of a minority group, they are inferior and less capable than those of a more prominent race.

A great majority of people in the United States are defined as minorities, as people who are in the minority racially, compared to the majority which is defined as White. While being defined as a minority statistically is ok, being made to feel as a minority is a very troubling reality to a lot of people, as they are sometimes made to feel like second class citizens. Many people respond differently when made to feel like a minority, and have to question the value of their ethnicity, as they have to fight the general stereotyping by the masses.

In the history of The United States, there has always been a history of discrimination that has come from many different areas by many different people that have led to violent discrimination acts to members of our society (Miller, 2003). These violent acts have been based on members of society bias views of others race, sex, disabilities, sexual preferences, and religion (Greenhouse, 1993). The members of these groups that have been discriminated upon are minority members of our society that have had to fight for their rightful place as a member of the American Society, and still, fight prejudice today.

Racism and racial stereotyping are constructs that has been around since the beginning of the colonization of America. It’s a notion very prevalent yet undermined by skepticism. Many would believe that a nation such as the United States of America has progressed from such a hideous perspective, however, their existence is once again escalating. There’s an underlying connection between racism and anxiety of black individuals causing them to turn to their own rather than seek sympathy from opposing races. This brief synthesis analysis will draw connections to this generalized statement aforementioned to elucidate on how perspective of minorities changes over the course of their lifetimes.

Although African Americans, Latino Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans are all minorities, they are similar in the ways of getting treated negatively, but they differ significantly.
