The American Revolution also referred to American War of Independence began with the Americans wanting independence from Britain. They wanted to be to own their country and to be a republic. In order to be their own country they had to fight and rebel against Britain. Organized militias and protest sprang up in the colonies. Americans had twice as less troops than Britain; often the American troops were just ordinary men. The troops were volunteers and often went unpaid. There were a strong number of Tories (colonists who remained loyal to King George and Britain); because they benefited from the amount they received from the British government. Colonist refused to buy the British goods such as Paper, Tea, and Sugar; because parliament passed laws requiring the colonists to pay the new taxes. They had no representation in parliament so; they did not want to pay the new taxes. The Americans needed leaders to go against the British; some were George Washington and Samuel Adams. George Washington was the military leader of the Continental army. Samuel Adams wanted to free the people from their social awe and political superiors. In 1772, Samuel Adams induced the meeting to select a “committee of correspondence” to state the rights and grievances of the colonists. The rebellion against the British monarchy only weakened. The French also aided them with an army and money, because Louis XVI wanted the British to be weakened too. In 1776, representatives of the thirteen colonies voted to adopt a Declaration of Independence, which established the United States of America.
