Between 500 BCE and 500 CE, the Roman civilization experienced changes both politically and culturally. Firstly, Rome’s government transitioned from a Republic to an Empire. Later, that empire was split into two parts; east and west. In terms of changes in culture, it was impacted by the shift in religion, as the Romans shifted from polytheism to monotheism. Despite all the changes, Rome still remained culturally diverse.

For a long period of time, Rome seemed like an unstoppable empire. It conquered the majority of the land surrounding it, including Greece, Turkey, Iraq, and many of its other neighboring countries. It seemed as though Rome would conquer the entire world, as it was the center of it, until it began to decline in 476 C.E. The primary reason for this was the people of Rome. Due to the citizen’s unhappiness, Rome slowly crumbled starting with its leaders, then its army, and finally its economy.

The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the Roman Empire and the culture within that civilization from 43-306 C.E. Centrally located in the Mediterranean lies Italy, one of the three great peninsulas that can be seen from the south of Europe. The Roman Empire and its civilization has always been one to be admired by people and leaders all around the world. Throughout this, Rome became perceived to the Greek influenced. After exceeding greater than 500 years, the Roman Empire survived from 27BC-476AD. The causes of the decline of Rome have been consistently been a subject of discussion and debate. The Roman military has performed an astonishing contribution towards the success and destruction of the Roman Empire. Its significance towards the Ancient Rome led this nation conquering multiple countries such as England, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Africa and the middle east. Throughout this conquer, the Roman Empire became adequate to obtain more power and become recognized by historians as a remarkably efficient combat.

Through the years 100 BCE and 600 CE, Rome underwent many political and cultural changes such as the changing of government systems multiple times over the 700 year span. However, many things also stayed the same politically and culturally such as the patriarchal rule over the people. A political change in Rome was that the systems of government they used changed multiple times.

Many anthropologists and historians have speculated about the different causes and effects of the fall of the Roman Empire. Some have even stated that Rome did not fall but instead, was merely transformed. However, there were many causes that did end this prodigious empire. Many seemingly small decisions made by powerful emperors over the course of just over a century lead to its destruction. In this paper it will be established that the Roman emperors, in an effort to save their political power, made adjustments to warfare/treaty practices and made political changes which over time lead to the inevitable collapse of the realm, this caused a drastic regression in the living standards of the Roman citizens, implying that the Empire did indeed collapse and not transform.
