Declaration of Independence- Written in 1776 by Thomas Jefferson, the 13 colonies declared themselves independent states from Great Britain. All political ties with Great Britain were also broken. The Declaration of Independence also helped outline how the government in the new country would function, and allowed the revolutionary war to be a war between two countries and not a civil war. The Influence of Sea Power upon History 1660-1783- Written in 1890 by Alfred Thayer Mahan, it was a naval strategy book. Policies in this book were adopted by most major navies. Alfred’s theories continue to be influential in the 21st century, evident in China’s and India’s emerging naval powers. Common Sense- Written 1775-1776 by Thomas Pane. Silent Spring- Written in 1962 by Rachel Carson. Tackled conservation issues that Rachel Carson believed were caused by synthetic pesticides. Led to a nationwide ban on DDT and reversed the national pesticide policy. The Souls of Black Folk- Written by W. E. B. Du Bois in 1903. Includes several essays on race and helped create an intellectual argument for the black freedom struggle in the 20th century. Du Bois drew information from his own experiences as an African-American in the American society. Letters from Birmingham Jail- Written by Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 16, 1963. Defends the strategy of nonviolent resistance and protests to racism. The letters became important to the civil rights movement. Emancipation Proclamation-The first draft was written by Abraham Lincoln on July 22, 1862, Final copy took effect on January 1, 1863.
