Teen Drivers over time have become three times more likely to become involved in a fatal vehicular accident. This statistic often leads to the negative stereotype of teen drivers. However, one must ask why are teens more likely to be involved vehicular accidents rather than any other age group. It would seem that they might have quicker reaction times, and even the ability to pay attention to the road and others around them more. However, these young drivers often attend school for eight hours, participate in extracurricular activities, and then some teens even work part-time even full-time jobs. Some suggestions have been to increase the driving age to twenty-one and older, however, the lack of experience would be heightened with a possible increase of driving under the influence since the legal drinking age is twenty-one. Therefore, instead of raising the driving age why doesn’t the state, or even community create a mandatory Driver’s Ed class, one for learning about driving and another for actually driving. This is due to the idea that teens are more likely to see the errors of their classmates and not want to make the same mistake, or see what to do in certain situations that a teen might not know about. For example, the majority of teens aren’t actually taught about what to do in case one's car starts hydroplaning, which is crucial for not only the driver but anyone around them on the road safety. This is due to how the cars wheels have no traction on the ground and if they accelerate, or brake they could lose control of their car even more so than they already had. Thus, providing a mandatory class for graduation for students aged sixteen through nineteen will give them the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge, so that they have a decreased chance of being involved in an
Maturity and rationalization is not yet achieved or experienced by teenagers. In the era of technology there are several distractions for drivers of any age to maneuver. Parents can play an educational role by enrolling their teen into a driver’s educational program. Some states require students to complete a comprehensive graduated drivers licensing (GDL) program prior to receiving their license. The brain function is still developing in teenagers and may impede the quick thinking process necessary to become a responsible driver. For the safety and welfare of teenagers the age requirement in Arizona for a driver’s license should be increased from 16 to 18 years of age.
Putting teens on the road at a young age as low as 15-16-years-old allows them to gain experience that will help them become more accustomed to the road when they get their driving licences at 18. As stated in the article, Teenage Driving Laws May Just Delay Deadly Crashes, it says “Many teenagers, rather than deal with the extra restrictions for 16-17 -year-olds, are simply waiting until they turn 18, and skipping the restrictions altogether. As a result, a greater proportion of inexperienced drivers hit the road” (40). This proves that teens who do not drive at 16 are more likely to get into car crashes, because they wait til 18 to avoid being restricted like the 16- 17- year-olds. Around 243,243 were treated in emergency departments for injuries that they suffered in motor vehicle accidents. Around 75% of teen drivers suffer in these accidents due to 3 major mistakes. Those major mistakes include a lack of scanning the road, distractions in the vehicle, and also going to fast for the conditions of the road.

Teens don’t realize how dangerous driving can be; they believe nothing could ever happen to them. In reality, facts show that driving is the number one killer of teens. In 2013, more than 2,500 teenagers died in the United States from motor vehicle crash injuries. Such injuries are by far the leading public health problem for young people 13-19 years old (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety [IIHS], 2014). Drivers are not the only ones at risk. Teenagers who are passengers in others vehicles make up a startling 87% of the fatality statistic. Lack of driving experience, disregard for traffic laws, and quick access to full driving privileges contribute to teen death. To reduce teen driving fatalities, successful completion of driver education classes provided by public and private schools should be mandatory for all teenagers prior to receiving their driving permit.
Shari Roan in “Should the driving age be raised” talks about the controversial issue all American families face when it comes to teens driving and the safety of others. She states that in a nationwide analysis the number of fatal crashes between the ages 16 and 17 year old drivers have fallen and the number of fatal crashes between the ages of 18 and 19 year old drivers have risen by almost the same amount. She states that the combination of immaturity and inexperience makes teen drivers particularly vulnerable to motor vehicle accidents. She also explains that car crashes are the leading cause of death among teens resulting in 4,054 fatalities in 2008 according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Arlington Va.
In the United States, Reckless driving is the number one cause of teenage death in the nation. Reckless driving can be classified as anything from speeding and swerving, to purposely trying to run someone over, or hurt them while driving. In America, there are countless organizations calling to help end the high death rate in teenagers that reckless driving takes. People such as Parents, Drivers Education Instructors and even state legislators have realized the problem and are seeking reform. In 2011 alone 2,650 teens between the ages of 16-19 were killed due to reckless driving. (CDC) Reckless driving is a death that is very preventable, with proper education and warning. As well as problem that is not taken seriously by the juvenile’s committing the act. Most juveniles don’t worry what so ever about dying in a car crash because they think that it won’t happen to them. This shows only shows sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds which is a one year difference and they hold the place for 11 percent of vehicle crashes. This ultimately shows that these two ages are at risk every time they close their car door.
In a year, it is stated that 2,715 adolescents in the United States alone were killed in motor vehicle crashes (IIHS). Many more than that were left with substantial injuries from accidents. If so many young kids are dying or being critically injured from accidents why aren’t more drastic measures being taken? There are numerous things that have been done to make driving safer for kids, such as implementing driving school and receiving temporary permits to drive to gain experience. From implementing these things, the fatality rate has dropped from over 5,000 to over 2,000 in a decade (IIHS). Though this is still not lowering the fatality rate enough, in the last year the data was available it is still said that vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in teenage males (IIHS). At the age of sixteen, most teens already know how to drive, but they have a higher crash rate than any other age. “In 2012, 60 percent of deaths among passengers vehicles occupants ages 16-19 were drivers”. This is very important because people at at this age are young and they have a long way to go before they pass, but instead some die at an early age. Teenagers are the future, to make life better, improving and carrying work that has been around for many years. Teen driving is unsafe and dangerous, teen driving is the leading cause of teenage deaths in the United States with more than 5,000 teens dying a year. 17 year old Weston Griggs, killed himself and the 2 passengers he had in his car. But, this accident was no accident. Weston was going 70 mph in a 40 mph speed zone. The issue in this story is that young drivers like Weston, inexperienced and full of adrenaline are just hurting them selves and others by getting behind the wheel at such a young age. Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is complex and demanding. Parents know how much experience a young driver has, and they know exactly how inconvenient it is when they have to drive with their teen everywhere while they have their permit. Teens tend to cause most traffic accidents in adults’ eyes. They are not experienced yet, and often fail to pay attention to others on the road. They often think of a car as being some type of toy, but they do not know how powerful it really is. The driver education programs must be strengthened in order to make sure that students really have safer habits, behind the wheel experience, and by having a better understanding of all the laws on the road.

The fact is I have helped prevent accidents the closest I have ever been to being in an accident was the fault of an older gentleman.
