What Caused The Civil War

Slavery makes people that are confident and people that think they can do anything, make them feel like they can't do anything and make them not confident.

From the birth of the United States, the country was always divided into two regions, North and South. The North benefited from industry, machines, factories, and even a bit of farming in the Midwest, while the South benefited from one thing. Slaves. Slaves were first brought from Africa as indentured servants, but once the demand of labor increased, they were changed into slaves, meaning they would never earn their freedom. The debate of slavery had always been a topic in politics, however it began growing with the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Soon in 1860, the country was divided into two seperate countries, the United States of America (North) and the Confederate States of America (South). However, the question still remains, what exactly caused the Civil War?

In 1861, a Civil War broke out in the United States when the South declared their independence from the Union. There is a great amount of reasons that people can argue how the Civil War was started. However, what most people don’t understand, is that most of the events leading up to the Civil War were related to slavery. Slavery was the core of the North and South’s conflict, which led to a very vicious feud.

One could argue that the true causes of the Civil War were states’ rights and taxations. Although this played a large part in the start of the Civil War, slavery was the ultimate factor that led to this event in history. Economic and social differences between the north and the south, fights between slave and non-slave proponents, the growth of the abolition movement, and the election of Abraham Lincoln are all events having to do with slavery in the United States that led to the start of the Civil War.

The Civil War was caused by the economics of slavery and the political control of that system, specifically being states’ rights on the federal powers of the government, the territorial expansion of the united states that led to the division of the two sides, and the election of President Abraham Lincoln which was the final event that sent the nation to war.

The causes of the Civil War were complex and have been controversial since the country began. Some causes include; states’ rights, economics, and slavery. The most recognizable and popular cause is slavery. The freeing of the slaves was an important moral issue at the time and one of the greatest causes of the civil war. "It was only by carefully avoiding the moral issue involved in slavery that Northerners and Southerners could meet on any common ground." (Goldston, 79). The time came in which our great country would finally address the moral issue of slavery. Although there are many different causes to the American Civil War, the main cause was slavery because other causes are rooted in the issue of slavery.

In the year of 1864, President Lincoln was re-elected but had some struggles along the way. The Civil War dramatically affected the Union as it was split among the decision of slavery. Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (1862), which transformed the wars purpose from the preservation of our nation into a battle for the abolition of slavery. Many Northerners did not like the idea of banishing slavery because the initial concept of the war was whether or not the president would be able to defeat the Confederacy of the South. The Northerners did not care about defending human rights. Lincoln’s progress with the war in his previous term helped him gain back power as president.

Throughout history people have debated the main cause of the American Civil War. One of the most popular beliefs is slavery caused the civil war. To begin with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was created, it required all citizens to help catch and return escaped slaves in the free states. This increased the amount of tension between the North and South due to many citizens of the North did not believe in slavery and therefore did not want to aid the South by catching the escaped slaves. A supporter of this compromise was Daniel Webster. He believed that the act could keep the North and South from splitting. As he stated in a speech on the 7th of March, “There can be no such thing as a peaceable secession. Peaceable secession is an utter impossibility”

The Civil war had many cause that had been built up for a long time, but these three in my opion were the ones that pushed it over the edge. My first reason is slavery, most of the north wanted to abolish slavery but the south wanted to keep theirs. This difference was the main factor that led to the civil war. After Lincoln was elected president, fearing he would abolish slavery South Carolina succeed from the Union. They were followed by many other states that led to the civil war.

Now that we have established the technical origins of the flag, the task is to trace how it has arrived at the status it holds today. The flag was a symbol of the Confederate States of America, the losing party in the Civil War. Volumes upon volumes have been written about the causes of the Civil War, but most historians agree slavery was the one single issue without which the war could have been avoided. The war was not fought over slavery in the South, but slavery in the territories, especially those acquired from Mexicoin 1848. Southerner's feared any kind of government regulation of their "peculiar institution," and saw the outlawing of slavery in the territories as a sure sign that slavery in the South would soon end as well. Generally, it is thought to be the South’s fault for causing the Civil War. Contrary to popular belief, the Civil War was mainly provoked by the North; through using the federal government to overtake the South, removing slavery which would destroy Southern economy, and creating the moral issue of slavery. The North was the primary reason for the start of a war that ripped our country apart.
