What Does Animal Farm Chapter 8 Mean

This was not the beginning of the Rule of Napoleon; it was supposed to be “All animals are equal;” however, it was changed to “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.” Napoleon’s ultimate demise was shown through some small actions in the beginning. Power twisted Napoleon’s conscience and his morals created a monster from which many feared.

Napoleon used his crisis to rule the land. In multiple scenarios of the book, he was ruling by the minute. When one animal would point out that he was sleeping in the bed of the farmer, he would say that “ he wasn’t sleeping with any bed clothes” even though the animals knew that the 10 rules written on the barn said otherwise. The animals grew to anger when each time they would argue with Napoleon, they would check that list where the information was located and it would be changed by what he had said.

Napoleon uses propaganda to peruse himself as a good person, who does no wrong. Squealer tricks the animals saying, “Do not image, comrades, that leadership is pleasure “(55) to help Napoleon. Soon after Napoleon is "elected unanimously” (116) as the president in the republic, he blames Snowball for “overthrow[ing] the windmill” (70) and “told the animals that the windmill was his idea” (57). When the animals see, Boxer be taken off by “Horse Slaughter” (124) Napoleon tries to tell them that the they haven’t repainted the side to say, “the veterinary surgeon” (124), but it really says “the knacker” (125). As propaganda helps Napoleon gain power so does changing the commandments.

One dark, misty night on Manor farm, the pigs were partying. They partied in the Jones house with Mr. Pilkington Napolean didn’t let any other animals into the house besides the pigs were so fat they couldn’t stand on two feet, they had to crawl. On the other hand the other animals were locked up in the barn and very mistreated; they were only fed leftover whiskey, milk, and apples.

In Animal Farm, the leader of Animal Farm, Napoleon, frequently uses self-deification tactics to elevate his status above the working animals of the farm. Orwell stated that Napoleon “was always referred to in formal style as ‘our Leader, Comrade Napoleon,’ and the pigs liked invent for him such titles as Father of All Animals, Terror of Mankind, Protector of the Sheep-fold, Ducklings’ Friend, and the like” (Orwell 93). These titles expressed that Napoleon was a benevolent, powerful, and god-like figure, which elevated him over the common animal on Animal Farm. After having a taste of power, the pigs lose themselves in their lust for ultimate power. Because of the supreme position of the pigs in the farm, a minority controls the majority of the animals, their greed for power leads to the corruption of the power. First of all, Napoleon uses dogs to expel Snowball in order to have exclusive power. Napoleon starts to against every suggestions Snowball proposes at the beginning. He raises the puppy secretly and shows them up while excluding Snowball. These fierce dogs become a sign of Napoleon’s authority and absolute power. It is the first time that execution happens in the farm, it disobeys the essence of Animalism, all animals are friends. However, no one dares to question him because Napoleon has the absolute power, even though it starts corrupting. Secondly, when the pigs move into the farmhouse and begin sleeping in the beds, the Fourth Commandment turns out to have mysteriously changed. While Napoleon was gaining power over the animals he had to get rid of other politicians and opposing citizens. He did this by raising dogs that would strike fear into citizens and end up chasing Snowball out of the farm making Napoleon have total power. “Four young porkers…uttered shrill squeals of disapproval…. But…the dogs sitting round Napoleon let out deep, menacing growls, and the pigs fell silent and sat down again.”(document B). This made it so the animals were too scared to oppose or overthrow Napoleon. He also made it so no one could challenge him politically. He did this by having his dogs kill masses of people so no one would dare have different opinions and speak out against him. “When they had finished their confession, the dogs promptly tore their throats out, and in a terrible voice, Napoleon demanded whether any other animal had anything to confess”(document B). The mass murder made it so Napoleon had total control of the farm. The antagonist of the book ‘Animal Farm’, Napoleon was highly emphasized for his cruel tactics that he upheld against his fellow animals. He tortured and tormented them giving himself the title of a cruel leader. This sense of tyranny is why he resembles Mr.Jones the previous owner of Manor Farm. Similar to Mr.Jones, Napoleon has created a caste system in which he is the “farmer” and the rest of the animals are his “slaves”, he has shown that he only uses the animals for his own monetary gain, and that he uses fear and propaganda to control the rest of the animals. In this essay I will compare and contrast the two individuals.

Napoleon who is demanding and overpowering pig always put himself first he believes that he Animal Farm leader and praises himself for things he done for the animals. He is an example of dictatorial leader because he is greedy for power and is also corrupted. Napoleon doesn’t show interest in the welfare of the animals. In the book

On page 92 the quote "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." I believe that this shows Napoleon's true intentions, to make one species of animal seem to be at higher power than another. After all of this time he was blaming things on Snowball and making it seem like he wanted the best for the farm, but really he just wanted the best for himself. for a leader of an area, he only wanted to make himself look good and didn't care how much work the animals had to do.

Napoleon uses his intelligence as a way to manipulate the other animals who don’t have the same knowledge like him into believing that they are all equal. He incrementally, changes the way the farm works, so that he gets the better of it, while the rest are working hard and not get the fair share they deserve. Napoleon as well changes the commandments, which as a result shows him as someone who is corrupted by power. By the end of the novella, only one commandment had left, but had an addition that Napoleon added. It reads, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

The first alteration was a simplification of the commandments by Snowball so that the animals having difficulty remembering all seven could understand the main idea of Animalism. This oversimplification is a huge mistake on Snowball’s part because it allows Napoleon to brainwash the rest of the animals and convince them of whatever he needs them to think. The rest of the alterations are by Napoleon attempting to cover up his human-like actions that break the commandments. As the Seven Commandments are continuously shortened, Napoleon continuously breaks them. First, Napoleon decides to engage in trade with humans, despite the commandment saying, "Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy." (Orwell 43). Then he and the pigs move into the farmhouse and sleep in the beds. To cover it up, Napoleon insists that the commandment prohibiting this was actually, "No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets” (Orwell 79), and stating that they removed the sheets from the beds. Things like this continue happening, but any suspicions the animals have are snuffed out until there is a bloodbath, and Napoleon has the dogs kill multiple animals who, 'confess' to conspiring with Snowball. Though the causes shock and misery amongst the animals (Orwell 93), Napoleon still gets away with it by claiming that the sixth commandment actually says,

In these serious times, I speak to you, animals of Manor farm, as the representatives of the future animal generations. At this time you are deciding which road will be paved. The hens tried to thwart Napoleon’s wishes, Napoleon was quickly given punishment for the hens, “He ordered the hens’ rations to be stopped, ... (76), this was that if animal disobeyed Napoleon, punishment came down. There were always dogs around Napoleon, “Napoleon, with Squealer and another pig named Minimus,...” (57), this was that Napoleon made Intimidation by using dogs around him. Animals did not say anything because the dog was scared for animals. Napoleon’s greed can for instance be seen in the fact that he takes the extra milk from the cows, and he uses Mr Jones’ bed and eats Mr Jones’ food, which none of the other animals were allowed to. Throughout these egoistic actions Napoleon’s personality comes to light, which ironically is against his own ideology of equality among all animals. Napoleon’s and the pigs’ egoistic development is illustrated in the change on the seventh commandment, when “All animals are equal.” turns into “ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.” . This development once again emphasize the importance of an educated working class, which could have ceased the farm’s development given that the animals would have see through Napoleon’s propaganda.
