The short story The lottery was written by Shirley Jackson. The Lottery was a tradition the village will follow every year. The lottery is usually a drawing of names from the villagers in the village. Every villager will have to retrieve a paper from the black box. If the villager receives the paper with the black dot in the center has to be stoned to death. In The Lottery Shirley Jackson uses symbolism to illustrate the theme of blindly following tradition and random persecution which in turn help enhance the action of the plot. The black is usually a symbolism of death or evil color (the book review). The lottery has a death tone and the black dot shows who will be stoned to death. Shirley Jackson uses the black dot as the sign of who will be the one that gets stoned because black is usually known as death. The lottery has the death tone and that helped Shirley Jackson assign the black dot as the symbolism for the death of the villager that was chosen. Tessie was the one that was chosen because she was the one that pulled out the white folded piece of paper that had the black dot in the center. As the conclusion of her getting the black dot in the paper tessie had to get in the center of the crowd and be ready to get stoned.Tessie was in the center ready to get stoned by the villagers while the villagers were ready picking up stones from the ground. The villagers used stones to stone her to death and remove her from the population. Tessie was hit by a stone in the side of her head as said by the Old Man Warner “A stone hit her in the side of the head” and Tessie’s death was the black dots results of removing
