What Is Coal: A Non Renewable Energy

Decent Essays

Coal is a non-renewable resource that we use to power different things from houses to trains and get our electricity from. In order to convert coal into electricity there are multiple steps in which your have to take. First, you have to mix ground coal with hot air which is then transferred into a furnace. A furnace is an inclosed area in which materials can be heated to a very high temperature inside of the furnace. The hot air and ground up coal will then heat a boiler which contains water inside of it. A boiler is basically a container that is used for heating water to high temperatures like pans that boil water. The water then condenses into water vapor or steam from the hot air and coals heating the boiler. The steam then turns a turbine …show more content…

1 megawatt is equal to 1 million watts of power used to power houses. Scientists thing that CCS or carbon capture and storage may be 15-50% cheaper than nuclear, wind or natural gas with the same CCS. Also, since 1970 the use for global coal has increased over 350% which coal makes up 55% of the worlds energy resources which is because it can be easily transported around the world on boats or …show more content…

First, dams block the water from moving downstream so it collects at the top of the dam. When they open the gates or intakes water rushes into a channel called the penstock. A penstock is a channel for conveying water to a waterwheel or turbine. From the penstock it travels to the turbine where it pushes past the turbine were the flow of the water causes the turning of the turbine blades. So, from the flow of the water downwards to it turning the turbine it is transferring from kinetic energy to mechanical energy. The water will then move out of the dam and continue to travel downstream. A shaft is connected from the turbine to the generator so when the turbine is spinning so is the generator. The generator uses a electromagnetic field to convert the mechanical energy so the energy is now electrical. Today modern dams can convert the water energy into 90% of
