Yet they are also the most feared and misunderstood. While both have negative connotations, they both are clearly still doing the job better than other alternative energy.

What is Nuclear Power? Nuclear power uses nuclear fission to release nuclear energy which creates heat that can then be used in nuclear power stations to provide electricity. In nuclear fission, the nucleus splits apart generating large amounts of energy. Nuclear fusion is also an excellent energy source because it produces no greenhouse gases or combustion products which are not radioactive. The drawback is that it takes too much energy so we are sticking to nuclear fission. Nuclear power a controversial issue because of accidents in previous years and the amount it costs to build advanced reactors. These accidents still have lasting effects that we as a country are working to fix. However I believe the most promising form of energy is nuclear power. In this paper I discuss the benefits of switching from energy production methods that use coal or natural gases to nuclear energy as our primary means of electricity. I touch on some of the many economic opportunities that these power plants provide us with. With this prompt I wanted to explore the idea of relying solely on nuclear energy which seems to be possible. However, many consider these concerns to be overly exaggerated, particular given the advancements in nuclear reactor technology since its earlier days. The fact is nuclear power is a cheaper source of fuel than using coal or oil, let alone compared to other traditional alternative forms of energy. Also in comparison to current fossil fuel based power generation, it is significantly safer and cleaner. We should use nuclear power instead of other sources of energy because it can produce high levels of electricity at relatively low cost, it would significantly reduce the existing damage to our environment and atmosphere caused by more common forms of fuel, and it is relatively safe.

Nuclear energy should not be the solution for our energy crisis problem because of the catastrophic possibilities it may cause. About 20% of our nation’s electrical use is supplied by nuclear power per year. It is a main source of energy because of how cheap and effective it is and the government has declared it “safe”. Several countries are starting to increase their dependence on nuclear energy because of its high energy output and the power to bring electricity to everyone’s home. Although nuclear power has conveniences like this, the dangers brought by it are eminent. The probability of another accident like Fukushima or Chernobyl are present in any nuclear plant and increase the risk of causing severe harm to those that live in a close range to these plants. Millions of people would die not only from the initial explosion, but also the after effects like nuclear fallout that would cause radiation sickness. In conclusion, nuclear energy should not be used because of the hazardous waste it produces, the unsafe storage of the hazardous waste, the possibility of fatalities, and the cost to produce these plants.

Because of this, people have become more aware of the issue and sought the most efficient and least harmful alternatives to provide energy for the world. As a result, many energy sources have been developed including wind, solar, and nuclear energy. Since many of these are relatively new processes, the long-term effects are just recently becoming more apparent, particularly with nuclear energy. Both Nuclear Power: a Panacea for Future Energy Needs by Allison MacFarlane and Five Myths About Nuclear Energy by Kristin Shrader-Frechette analyze the benefits and disadvantages of nuclear energy from the supporting and disapproving sides. Macfarlane took a slightly neutral approach and mentioned the overall gains and losses of nuclear energy while explaining why the gains outweigh the obstacles. Shrader takes a more directly opposing approach towards the matter. She skims over the benefits and focuses mainly on the negative effects. Both writers' methods for organizing their major points are different, but it allows them to better explain why they are either for or against nuclear energy.

Power, a commodity and much debated about topic today. Many take turning on a light or heater for granted. The problem is that fossil fuels won’t last forever and the solutions are a hot topic amongst the scientific community. Many different solutions have been offered, each with it’s pros and cons. Some scientists are arguing for clean and renewable energy like solar or wind, while others claim that we should find more effective ways of mining and using fossil fuels. Neither of these are a single solution that can power the world for an extended period of time. Many have ideas of how we should harness power, however, not many of them could be a permanent solution, unlike nuclear fission is a cleaner, safer, and more reliable solution.
